Dwight Freeney to Visit Chargers on Wednesday

The San Diego Chargers are reacting quickly to the news of Melvin Ingram’s torn ACL and they will have Dwight Freeney in for a visit tomorrow (Wedneaday). Freeney had 5 sacks with the Colts last season as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 system. It was a different position for him and a new defensive coordinator and he didn’t have his best season. He does have a little experience in the 3-4 defense now and hopefully he will want to continue in that scheme.

Tom Telesco should be very familiar with Freeney from their days with the Colts. Tom will have to find a way to move some funds around, but there are options. Eddie Royal will likely be let go and LeRon McClain is another candidate to be released. Jeromey Clary is getting moved inside on the offensive line, but that move may not matter as much as the cap space that can be saved with his release.

Without Melvin Ingram in the lineup, the Chargers soft pass rush just became even more terrible. We already were counting on Melvin on having a breakout year, but now we would have to rely on Larry English and rookie Tourek Williams. That doesn’t sound like a winning plan. Larry and Tourek are better suited coming off of the bench relieving Jarret Johnson on passing downs.

Freeney is the best option available for the Chargers and at this point, we are more desperate for an outside linebacker over a left tackle. Too bad we didn’t keep Shaun Phillips or Antwan Barnes around. Now we have to get Dwight Freeney or we are relying on Larry English.
