San Diego Chargers Select WR Keenan Allen

The San Diego Chargers finished off their draft today by adding WR Keenan Allen in the 3rd Round. Allen is a shifty wide receiver that is a steal in the 3rd round. He was considered by some as a possible first round draft pick.

Allen will be awesome on the offense and this could be bad news for Eddie Royal. Allen didn’t test well during the combine and during his Pro Day, but he has great tape and shows that he can make people miss when he has the football in his hands.

Love the selection again by Telesco. He is not afraid of making a splash! Nice move!

Besides the terrible 40 time, this guy is a beast

    • http://twitter.com/FooIio Calum

Any that’s mostly due to his injury. Should be faster once 100%

      • Cgoodness13

On tape he looks around 4.6-4.4

          With so much quickness

  • JoseSD

Alexander, Floyd, Brown , Allen, Meachem, Royal, Goodman, Willie, Butler. I say they only keep 5-6WRs. Who gets cut??

    • http://twitter.com/FooIio Calum

We keep 1st 5. Rest go?

      • Cgoodness13

Rest go practice squad I think

      • Gunnar Martin

Which one would return kicks? I think we have to keep either Royal or Goodman. Or Spurlock ;)

Or I guess Woodhead or someone else on the roster could do it. Oh, never mind that comment was pointless.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          Spurlock is gone tho

          • Gunnar Martin

Yeah I know I was just saying that they could still bring him back (notice the winky face). Would much rather have him than Goodman.

    • Gunnar Martin

Since it will hurt our cap terribly if we cut someone, I think we should resort to trading either Royal, Meachem, or Floyd. Keep Willie and Butler on the practice squad.

Love the pick but does this mean we sign McKinney in the next few days?

    • RussinSactown

Sounds like we rent a vet at left tackle

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

That would be the best thing ever

    • Cgoodness13

      I’d prefer Starks, but yes

      • Gunnar Martin

Yes, Starks over McKinney. Please, oh please get that one right TT!

  • Rob Base

I like that pick! Stacked at WR right now. Who is getting the axe? Good job today Telesco!

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

We got 3 first round talents in 3 rounds, we didn’t all needs but we deffinetly got better. I really wasn’t expecting a WR, people are going to say TT panicked and went BPA after the Saints stole Armstead but maybe he wanted Allen all along. PR loves his big targets and got a nice new one.

    • Cgoodness13

      Yup

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Right… Will be interesting. Love the best player approach

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

PR wants to keep standing. One step at a time. He can’t throw if he can’t be upright. And King Dunlap is not the answer.

      • Brandon Rios

Well, who wouldve you have drafted Stefanie? I rather pick someone whos going to help right away then draft someones whos not going to contribute right away.

        • joerockt

I think if the ultimate goal was to get a true starting LT, they should have traded up. We’ll find out on Monday night now if Te’o was worth it.

  • tiiiiiiiiiiit11

Best WR in the class IMO. Only dropped because his numbers reflected how he was still bouncing back from an injury.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Exactly

  • Cgoodness13

I still believe we will get Starks in FA

    • RussinSactown

We are going for a solid free agent I hope

I feel we might pick up McKinney, or Albert from KC in FA.

    • Cgoodness13

I’m ok with McKinney, I’ll burn down the stadium if we trade for Albert lol (not that I hate what telesco had done, I actually love it, just a huge waste of money for Albert)

  • Gunnar Martin

I’m so completely torn with this pick. I love the amazing value that we pick up with Keenan, and he was my favorite WR all along, but his position is just the least of priority at the moment! Now we have DX, Floyd, Brown, Meachem and Allen who all play outside, and Royal, Brown (he can play both), and I guess Goodman in the slot. Who stays and who goes?

Meachem would be the prime choice, but it would hurt the cap a ton. Same goes for Royal, and besides, I would love to see what McCoy can do to revive his career. I suppose either could get traded, but who would want them and for what in return?

Personally, at this point I think we should get rid of Floyd. He is old, gets injured all the time, and is relatively similar to Keenan (tall, outside threat, etc). Allen is just an upgrade over him. I wonder what we could get in return if we traded HIM.

Still wish we would have picked a nose tackle (either Jenkins or Williams) :(

    • 619chargers4life

      hmmmm

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I didn’t like it at first, until I dug up a few articles on him. The guy is good and Mayock still thinks he is good. Know that doesn’t mean much, since he thought Blaine Gabbert was the best. But others think he is good, but he had injuries. He is coming with a chip on his shoulder, mad that he got drafted so late. Maybe we can give him a chance. We do need depth. Decent depth. Not crippled depth.

      • Gunnar Martin

Like I said before, KA was my favorite receiver the entire time- he is definitely an exciting prospect that we got amazing value on. Not sure out this season will work out for him with so many good receivers.

On the other hand, Allen will be happy to know that Rivers- known for spreading the ball to everyone including the ball boy- will be his new QB and will still hopefully get a fair chance.

        Happy Birthday (literally- it’s tomorrow)!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

You bring up a good point. Maybe McCoy can revive Meachem. He is known for that. Hmmm.

      • Gunnar Martin

Same goes for Royal. What a mess.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

We never got so much NFL Network coverage until we picked Teo.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      And I love it

      • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Yeah, but give Keenan Allen some media attention. Not all about Teo.

        • Cgoodness13

I know right?! Google charger and all you get is manti (and some stuff about fluker and gronkowski)

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I read a decent new article on Allen. Made be feel better about the pick. But the media is nuts on Teo…sort of like Tebow. That is the part I do not like. There are other good players to talk about besides Teo.

Fluker and Allen won’t be doing their own separate press conferences when they come to town, but I bet that Teo does his own–like Tebow did.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        Hahaha…. Me too.

  • joerockt

Mayock was gushing over our picks. Feels pretty good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Yes, he was. And Eisen–all he can talk about is Manti Teo. But he has always been a Teo fan boy.

    • Cgoodness13

He did look like he had a “moist” spot lol

  • Gunnar Martin

Cam Thomas strangely benefited from this pick. IMO, we should have picked our new NT with our third round draft pick. Between John Jenkins or Brandon Williams, we would have had a great new center to our 3-4 defense to pair up with Luiget and Reyes. And then have Thomas only come in on passing downs.

Wow, how great that would have been.

  • Joel Garcia

Best Receiving Core in the NFL ???

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Nope… Denver, Atlanta are better off the top of my head

    • Gunnar Martin

We’ll see. Definitely could be eventually.

  • Pels04

Love this pick. Couldn’t have let him get past us. Our WR core is stacked

  • Gunnar Martin

Nickname ideas? For any of them?
