The San Diego Chargers signed former Packer DJ Smith to join the linebacker group.

The Packers released Smith on Wednesday. The linebacker started the first six games for the Packers in 2012 before suffering a season ending knee injury against the Texans. Smith recorded 80 tackles, two sacks, and one interception over 22 games with the Pack from 2011-12 – via Fitzy

He can’t be looked at as the starter for or team but will be good depth. He is coming back from an injury and will have to prove that he is all healed up. He was looked at as the starter for the Packers at the start of last season, but suffered an injury that killed his season.

He is undersized for a middle backer but it seemed that a few Packers fans were upset about letting him go. He could be a good steal for the team. Definitely will be nice to add depth to that part of the roster.

    is he any good?

He started for them and was looked at to take over for AJ hawk… But was injured

        how bad ?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

He was out for the year… Small linebacker… Will have to see how he recovers.. Think it was an ACL injury

          • Julien Bélair

most likely just a back up

depending on how mouton plays, if smith heals by camp, and if we draft an ilb he can slide into the starting spot next to butler..

          • Julien Bélair

if we draft an ilb in the first 4 rd i doubt he could beat him for the starting job, but hey we never know. we just have to look at mouton to see how i could happen

Sorry if I missed something but isn’t that exactly what it just said in the article?

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        I copied his… Sorry

Oooohhh okay got it. That makes more sense now. I’ve learned to ignore the small name in italics after the end of a quote- not exactly a good habit haha.

            Yea… I was in a meeting

            Still in a meeting

Think this means we are not drafting a ILB, good we have less holes to fill. I really want to trade down with the rams for all their 1st round picks (and they will have to throw in a 4th or 5th round to match the whole point system thing). So maybe we can land a Tackle like fluker or Watson with one and a CB like trufant with the other.

  • Gunnar Martin

Is he a good run stopper, or is he mostly just a coverage linebacker? Can he start opposite Butler once he’s healthy?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Not sure on that part… Size suggests no

      • Gunnar Martin

On which part? Run D, coverage, or what?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          run d

          • Gunnar Martin

Ok well looks like that won’t matter now that we have Te’o!

this could be a sign of a draft day trade.
