Chargers 2013 Round 1 Draft Cluster

Here are the cluster of players that I would love the Chargers to consider in the first round of the draft.

With all the draft talk in the last few weeks, I have gotten hot and cold with a bunch of players, but here is the group of guys (for today at least) that I would like the Chargers to select from in the first round of the draft.

Any of the Tackles (Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher, Lane Johnson)
We all know how bad that left tackle spot was last season. Mike Harris was TERRIBLE on the island out there and another season with him out there would get Philip Rivers killed.

As bad as Philly fans thing King Dunlap was, he already is an upgrade to what we had.

The new coaching staff must see the need of upgrading the line, but I am sure that they would actually adjust to having a bad line and wouldn’t force 7 step drops all game long.

Either way, having security to Philip’s blind side would give him a little more comfort and we would HOPE to see better decision making from him.

Tavon Austin
PLAYMAKER! I understand the size issue and I understand we have receivers on the roster already, but do we have playmakers like Tavon Austin on the roster?

When he touches the ball, he is a threat to score. He is a homerun hitter in an offense that has a bunch of guys that don’t do much after catching the ball. He is a mismatch nightmare.

Adding Danario Alexander to the offense made Philip so much better last season. A player like Tavon Austin can only help him further.

WE NEED WEAPONS FOR PHILIP! Best weapon available in the draft right there.

Kenny Vaccaro
Just thinking of a tandem like Vaccaro and Eric Weddle in the secondary makes me smile. One of the skills that Vaccaro could add to the defense is his ability to cover the slot receiver. He would be huge in the nickel defense and could help cover Wes Welker in the division.

Vaccaro is quick to the football and is a playmaker on the defensive side of the football. A tandem of Vaccaro and Weddle would/could be one of the best in the league.

Star Lotulelei
If the tackles and Tavon are gone, then you have to start looking toward the defensive side of the football. In a 3-4 defense, the nose tackle is the key to the whole defense. Lotulelei has been projected as the top pick before and there are also mocks that have him dropping down to 11.

If he is available, he could be the beast in the middle for years to come and can command double teams. He also can add a good pass rush up the middle and force the quarterback to get the football out of his hands. He is super quick off of the ball and would immediately help on the defensive front.

Alec Ogletree
So much speed and athleticism in the middle of the defense. Ogletree is quick to the football and can cover tight ends with his athletic ability. Imagine the middle being patrolled by Ogletree and Donal Butler.

I dont have any of the top guards in the cluster of players I would like to see drafted on Thursday. Either Jonathan Cooper and Chance Warmack are safe selections, but the depth at guard in this draft is deep and we can find another top guard in the later rounds. I would rather pick up a playmaker in the first round and fix that guard spot later.

Who do you have in your first round draft cluster?

    Great job!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      thank you

  • Julien Bélair

i really like trading down with vikings. They will take tavon austin and i believe cooper will be available for us at 23.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i forgot to add the option of trading down… definitely think that would be a good option. having more picks would be awesome

      • Julien Bélair

i think TT will do what ever he can to find a partner for thursday

    • tbell11

Cooper will not be available at 23, but maybe a ILB in Manti Te’o. If he’s gone then what about OLB Jarvis Jones to play opposite of Melvin Ingram once Johnson is gone or move johnson to ILB and start Jones.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

ogletree might still be around at 23 also…

        • boltingindiego

he should be but might get picked by 19.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

That’s my trade-down pick.. or Te’O.. Let’s get Butler some friggin’ help if we trade down, yo!

      • Julien Bélair

i like the idea of pushing jj inside and draft another lob. but manta teo would be a bad idea in our situation imo

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          no love for Manti?

          • Julien Bélair

dont get me wrong i really like teo. But i dont think it is smart for the chargers to go possibly bust ilb in their first round. To me they would get more value if they look in another direction with their first rd pick : G LT RT DT. btw i wouldn’t be mad to stay at 11 and draft austin.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i would jump for joy if we drafted austin at 11! ha

          • Julien Bélair

we would finally be an exiting offence like we use to !

          • FitzWilly

            Nope
            He’s a goof-ball

          • joerockt

No love for Manlove. He’s a boy among men.

        • boltingindiego

          johnsons to slow for ilb.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

why did we sign him for 4 years again? SIGH

          • boltingindiego

he should have been given a 2 year contract but DA aj gave him a 4 year so were likely stuck with jj for 1 more year has run def olb.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

right!!! and we wonder why we have no pass rush… jarret johnson is on one side on 1st and 2nd down. what is there to worry about?

          • Pels04

Remember when Pagano tried to convince us that JJ could rush the passer. haha ahh…That was funny

          • Julien Bélair

any chances they release him ?

          • boltingindiego

maybe after this season but i think it would be after next season.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

we would save nothing releasing him this year…. possibly next year, but even more possible the year after

          • Julien Bélair

mayby after this year. not to save money but to save the roster spot for another player

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He did get that safety… lol.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            hahaha… remember travis LaBoy?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Thankfully, I had forgotten all about him… until now.. thanks, man. That SF deal wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, eh? Manusky, Spikes, LaGirl…. totally WHACK!!! At least we got some use out of Spikes.. and his extended playoff curse. Doh!

          • Julien Bélair

well spikes did it. but to me he is to slow for olb and lib

          • boltingindiego

this though would be a completely different position for jj spikes though slowing down had experience in the middle.

          • Julien Bélair

i know you’re right i just don’t like jj and i tried to find a spot where he hurts us less than olb

    • boltingindiego

cooper would be gone by dallas.

      • Julien Bélair

i think they will prefer dj fluker

        • boltingindiego

i feel they will address their rt needs after the draft and get a guard in the draft if its cooper or warmack their. unless they go 2nd for warford but he could be gone by then.

          • Julien Bélair

would be a good option for them. I feel jerry jones is a flashy gm and a guard is not a sexy pick. cooper could be an exception he is a beast

    • Sergio Quintero

Fluker should be taken by the Giants at 19, and the guards will not get past Dallas. At 23 your best hope is Pugh, Watson.

  • davacho

THANK YOU for doing a cluster- much more realistic. i am also down to trade out of 11.

  • RussinSactown

If we aren’t getting one of the tackles, trade back a few places for more picks and target Armstead in the 2nd.

  • Cgoodness13

I’d rather draft a G or CB if Johnson is off the board, rivers has enough weapons, not enough blocks. Also why not draft a FB in the later rounds?

    • Julien Bélair

If we cant trade down Austin would become BPA and I am sure you would love to see lightnings bolts on his helmet

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        not CG13… :)

        • FitzWilly

          CGXIII :)

  • FitzWilly

    Uncle Fitzy’s got a “Draft-Boner” going on :)
Can’t wait to see what T-Squared has in store for us
It’s like being a kid at X-mas, waiting for Santa to cum

    Am I right Ladies :)

  • Cgoodness13

Anyone else getting the assumption we will find our starting left tackle after the draft in FA? Who do you think it will be? McKinley, Starks, etc? Johnson totally got rocketed up the draft boards. I just saw a mock with him going to the lions and fisher going to the raiders. It was on NFL.com

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i would be fine with McKinnie or Starks for a 1 or 2 year rental

      • boltingindiego

i would say okay to starks for a 2 year but mckinley 1 year rental.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think it really would just depend on the guaranteed money… either way, a tackle from free agency seems are best option.

          • boltingindiego

cant trust a former balt lt with a lot of guaranted money.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            ha.. did that once already

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Price will go up, right after the 2nd day, if no LT is taken. Hope we put some cash away ; )

    • tubbs45

Dont forget Smith too, if Cinci grabs a tackle…

      • boltingindiego

way to expensive and hes a rt.

    • boltingindiego

if i had to choose it would be starks but mckinley could be okay.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Watch our pick be none of those guys lol, I’m with you Ernie, any of those dudes or a trade back would be quite nice. I’d love for us all to feel happy about each selection and not have many head scratchers.

  • joerockt

I agree about the guard spot. We’ve got guys who could get the nod there, especially with Troutman being healthy this year. We could have addressed this last year with DeCastro, but oh well. I think Austin is the sexy pick, but doesn’t address the glaring needs. I would say if we don’t pickup one of the T’s, then your list of others is great, in this order: Star, Ogletree, Vaccaro, Austin.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      but i like sexiness!! haha

      • joerockt

Yea I do have to agree Austin looks great and we could use a play maker since Sproles/VJax. Ugh.

      • FitzWilly

        Tx E-Dawg
you’re gonna make Old Fitzy blush

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

dangit fitzy… catch me off guard all the dang time! love it tho

          • FitzWilly

            You’re welcome E-Dawg

          • FitzWilly

            this be “gif”en

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i have never tested gifs on here… this better work awesomely

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            FAIL!

          • FitzWilly

            testing

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think i am going to write a letter to disqus on how i am sad that animated gifs do not work with their product… and that i wish i saw the jpgs get send to my email as well on comments

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

letter goes like this…. dear disqus, y no animated gifs?
            the end

          • FitzWilly

            if that doesn’t work
make fun of their momma :)

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            HA!

          • FitzWilly

            that would a good thing
send them a stern e-mail in all CAPS
            so they know you’re serious
Let me know how that works out for you :)

  • Bryan Utu

I like it. I would realll like to see us trade back if the 3 tackles are gone and pick up Ogletree or Maybe Watson. Stockpile and fill so many open holes. Good read.

  • FitzWilly

    + 11 =

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i dont think that worked out the way you wanted it to

      • FitzWilly

        Not even close E-Dawg lol
I’ll keep working on it :)
        should be
        T^2 + 11 = :)

  • Pels04

I wouldnt be mad if we took a G for our first pick but it wouldnt be my first choice. I really like Vaccaro so he’d probably be my pick if the top LT’s & DT’s are gone. Who knows tho Ernie, your wildest dream might come true cuz you know TT said he wanted to add speed and drafting Austin would definitely do that. Man that would be exciting

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i know i know i know… it could really happen… getting my hopes up… cuz that is what i do

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Mine is the same as yours, except I have Milliner instead of Tavon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.dadd.7 Robert Dadd

    DT Sheldon Richardson at #11?

    • Gunnar Martin

Don’t think he fits the 3-4, but if he does then that would be great.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i dont think he fits a 3-4 either…. since that is the case, would rather go another direction

    • Sergio Quintero

He’s basically a clone of your 2 best young players Liuget & Reyes, can’t play NT, so he might be the best player, he will not find enough snaps to justify the pick.

  • sanford peisner

Other than Austin good list .I would add Fluker

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

would you be disappointed in Austin?

  • Sergio Quintero

ESPN is doing its bloggers mock draft and the top 3 LT’s are gone by pick 5, am I alone in saying that I have lost all faith that any of them will be available by pick 11.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

ha… been thinking that for a while now.

      • Sergio Quintero

How much grief should we give James Fedawa in terms of his belief that Eric Fisher will make it to 11?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahahahahahahahahaha…. if he turns out to be right, then we can all eat crow….. but i have a good feeling we wont be wrong.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

he would look genius though otherwise

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            or foolish

          • Sergio Quintero

I have feeling the chargers will try to parachute down to 23 (Vikings) and take Justin Pugh, and get an additional 2nd rounder. NFL networks guys love Pugh.

    • Sergio Quintero

As I expect the AFC West blogger took a OG Jonathan Cooper

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i actually feel that Fluker might be a better selection than any of the guards…. will have a post on it later… but he can play guard or right tackle. he has such long arms too.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          also… who likes clary anyway?

        • Sergio Quintero

If the chargers are moving to a ZBC then Fluker is not a fit for me, feet are just not good enough, if they playing a hybrid system then it may work out.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

yea… i feel we are going hybrid… we will see… our new staff is so secretive…

        • Sergio Quintero

I wouldn’t mind any of the guards, clearly they will make this team better, and with a QB like Philip, where interior pressure is the ultimate play killer, can’t argue with it. Lets just say you would hit a double, but not a home run.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

If I say Rivers is set with what he has now, can we pop a hundred comments?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Haha… Like your style. And I would die if we were done on offense. Still feels like we are missing something.
