FanSided NFL Mock Draft: The San Diego Chargers Select…

The FanSided crew has a NFL Mock draft rolling right now where all the different editors from all the team sites are making the selections. When spot number 11 came up onto the clock, Ernie Padaon and the San Diego Chargers selected….

Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas

All the tackles were already off of the board and  Chance Warmack was already taken. I probably wouldn’t have taken him anyway. Jonathan Cooper was there for the picking, but had to go in a different direction. The Chargers can pick up a guard later if they want it.

Here is how the draft broke down before it got to pick 11:

1. Kansas City Chiefs – Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
2. Jacksonville Jaguars – Dion Jordan, LB, Oregon
3. Oakland Raiders – Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
4. Philadelphia Eagles – Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
5. Detroit Lions – Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
6. Cleveland Browns – Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
7. Arizona Cardinals – Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
8. Buffalo Bills – Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
9. New York Jets – Barkevious Mingo, OLB,LSU
10. Tennessee Titans – Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida

Anyone surprised I didn’t go Tavon Austin on this one?

If I can’t get one of those big time offensive linemen, we are going to make the defense the strength of this team. Team up Eric Weddle with another high potential safety and we could have something good happening on the defense. Having playmakers on that side of the ball can shorten up fields and give Philip Rivers more opportunities to put that ball in the end zone. Remember some of the failures of last season? 4th-and-forever? Debacle where we lost a 24 point lead?

Add a couple more playmakers on the defense and those things will never happen. Get off the field on 3rd down and Philip will get more opportunities.

This team needs PLAYMAKERS!

      • davacho

i just want us to drop back a few if we can’t get the oline guy we want. per our conversation last night, i hate that we reached on mouton and english…

  • RussinSactown

This is just you using your powers of misdirection. Well played sir!

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

He’s a good looking guy, Ernie and his man crushes…..

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I can’t help it.,, his beauty is mesmerizing.. Haha

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        Welcome.

  • 619chargers4life

    G Smith to KC. wowzers

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i was shocked by the selection to start it out… and a tackle still didnt fall to us with KC going in a different direction

      • 619chargers4life

yeah im pretty sure we will have no chance at a LT in the first. but my optimism reminds me of how Ingram fell to us last year. anything can happen. Vaccaro would be an awesome pick. this draft needs to hurry up. im starting to feel like a kid counting down to Christmas.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Definitely a Christmas feeling!

        • nativesandiegan

And hoping we don’t just get clothes (except we need clothes-(guard, OT)

          • 619chargers4life

            yeah, no socks lol

    • RussinSactown

Didn’t they just trade their left tackle to Miami? Not happening.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Not quite yet

  • Rob Base

    That pick is money!

  • Cgoodness13

Strongly disagree with the lions pick, lions fans want a CB and they’ve been in need for years

    • boltingindiego

im predicting LT for them they will put fisher at LT then put reiff at RT.

  • boltingindiego

i wouldn’t mind this pick or cooper. But idealy i would want us to trade back a little then select vaccaro with an addition of another 2nd or 3rd round pick.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

would be awesome, but if we want vaccaro, we would have to take him with this selection. otherwise we risk losing out on him

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I said it a few days ago. The earliest pick we would probably get by trading down
is at 16 with the Rams. The Saints worked Vacarro out this week, and
will probably pick him at 15.If they are going to make this move, they need to make it at 11.

      • boltingindiego

since their switching to a 3/4 they need pash rushers. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went for an olb like jones or if that byu guy is there. Mingo is an option also, their d needs alot of work not just at safety

  • blu3ny3llow

You know I am really starting to like this dude I read he is “highly instinctive and versatile like Weddle”…..imagine that safety duo……hopefully would fill our long awaited need for an elite SS….and could probably also play the nickle

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!

      • BlueBoltFan

If the top 3 tackles are gone and we can’t trade out of the 11 spot, I say BPA out of Lotulelei, Mingo, and Vaccaro in that order, and I’m happy with any of those 3. I really think Vaccaro’s legit. He could make us nasty at safety. And yeah, he can cover! Safety position: Done. Bring on Rd 2..

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Take Mingo out of that equation, and I agree.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He CAN play the nickel.. no question. Gilchrist is an “OK” nickel IMO. But, we could put Vacarro in when we needed to.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Interesting that Gilchrist was getting snaps at strong safety during mini camp… If Vaccaro is selected, he would be nickel and Gilchrist would need to find another role on the team… Like safety in the nickel package… Hnmm… :) mind control

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

When the 13-3 , spread offense, multiple WR sets, sick pass rush, Denver friggin’ Broncos are in your division.. you can’t have enough guys that can play CB packages. I thought we could trade down. But, if the Saints had no interest in Vacarro, it would be a different story. They have no reason to not pick Vacarro where they are at. They need a Weddle. We need TWO to cross that position off the list, and be dominant. Which they would be!!! That’s what makes teams.. Find the strong pints, and balance out the rest!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Wow… are you trying to say you like “The Cowboy” Kenny Vacarro at #11, Ernie? Join the Darkside, and we can rule the Charger universe together, and make your training complete!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Hahahahahahaha… You used mind control for me to start liking Vaccaro!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I wish I had mind control… but it’s just the facts, Ernie… just the facts. Hahaha!

  • Nick in PB

I think I would have gone with Cooper. Vaccaro is a very good safety but we just drafted one in the 2nd last year. I think we give that guy a good look once healthy before moving on to another safety.

    • boltingindiego

it was the third. but it all depends on what tt thinks of taylor.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I agree. I think Taylor is one of those rookies that may be a casualty of Norv, and his abject unwillingness to start fresh talent over Vets. His timeline is all screwed up now.. 50% Norv & AJ trying to save their jobs.. 50% injury. I think he can be a good safety soon.. but isn’t everyone preaching the “we gotta win now” gospel lately?

        • boltingindiego

ya and that 50% of them saving their job really f’ed up our cap this year. If TT and pagano really believe in taylor and that he will be ready by training camp or pre season than they can’t draft a ss first 3 rounds. I wouldn’t mind signing lynch again to provide insurance.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He could fill the spot between Liuget & Mathews

        • Nick in PB

Yup! Norv hardly ever played the rooks… Taylor should have gotten his playing time earlier. And yet PT, win now. As we build, we’ll win more. I like the new philosophy. I think the players are starting to see what attitude and confidence can do from the start.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            That’s the truth right there.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Sup Nick?!!!! Chikka Chikka!!! You my dawg, mang!!!
Actually Taylor was a third round. He was a good leader at LSU, but in my opinion… when you have an opportunity, you take it. I am far from confident that Taylor can play this year.. Bigby is gone… I don’t like anyone in FA, or on the roster… And Vacarro is far more versatile than Taylor, who has stiff hips!. Trade him to the Pats later, if he doesn’t win the battle for SS over KV. They seem to like our cast off safeties. It’s not that I don’t like Taylor… it’s just that he was a third round talent, has no experience (mainly because Norv & Pagano never let him play), and is coming off of a horrific injury, where the timeline is not forgiving.

      • Nick in PB

PT… you make great points there. I liked Taylor coming out of LSU, thought it was a great pick in the third (thanks) but you may be right on Vaccaro. TT sounds like his approach is going to be draft the best player available (according to our needs) when our pick comes up. Obviously, our OLine is the biggest area of concern. That said, it may take a while longer to fix. I’m just giddy about this draft! Can’t wait to see what TT does. Love the fact that we have a GM that speaks to the fan base, even if it’s generalization, at least he’s a higher profile that AJ.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I hear ya. Vacarro is just who I like. Whether or not TT picks him is another story. He probably won’t.

  • Kenny Redman

If the tackles are all gone, I’m betting the Charger try to trade down.

    • boltingindiego

with our team having a lot of holes i wouldn’t mind some extra picks.

  • sanford peisner

Hope they don’t draft Defense round 1. Go for a guard or one of those big under rated tackles from Alabama that have played SEC football.Something like 50+ defensive linemen from SEC schools in NFL.Their ready. Rivers will be great if he has a line to block for him.

  • http://www.signonsandiego.com/ Ambitoos

It makes no sense to me to have a mock draft on a Charger website and not include the Chargers in the mock draft. You could have included the #11 spot. Kenny Vaccaro isn’t even being considered. They will trade for future draft picks before getting Vaccaro.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

huh? but I wrote who I selected with the 11th selection..
