Tom Telesco Looking To Add More Team Speed

I want to go fast! I want to go fast!

Tom Telesco was talking to the media on Tuesday and one of the things that stood out for me was that he wants to add more team speed during the NFL Draft.

…MORE TEAM SPEED!

That is something that is lacking on the roster. That must be the reason why we are moving on from players like Takeo Spikes and Quentin Jammer. Maybe that is why Tom Telesco only put a low tender on Danario.

Where does that point to with our firsts pick in the draft? Could that mean we are adding a new safety like Kenny Vaccaro? Could it mean that we look to add a middle linebacker like Alec Ogletree? Possibly a speedy receiver on the roster? An offensive linemen like Terron Armstead in the second round?

This team doesn’t have speed. Check out the wide receiver position. Which one of the top 3 guys would you consider a speedster? Danario? Malcom? Vincent?

We don’t need to get all Al Davis, but I wouldn’t mind adding more speed all over the roster. They still need to be good football players.

I don’t care if my offensive linemen can run a fast 40, but it would be nice to get people flying to the football, flying when they have the ball in their hands, just flying. Speed. Speed kills!

Great clip lol “If ur ain’t first, ur last”

Tavon Austin is pretty fast! ;-)

Cooper would be the ideal line man if they’re looking for an up tempo move the sticks kind of offense, he could get up the field fairly quickly adding more blocking for RM

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Jarret Johnson is the slowest guy out of the linebackers, I wonder if he comes in on running downs and goal line plays. He’s slow slow

  • RussinSactown

Al Davis went with speed at the cost of every other football skill imaginable. I want to see speed but I also want to see talent.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

      Exactly.

    • nativesandiegan

I’m sure you won’t’ be disappointed Russell

    • nativesandiegan

That’s the one thing that scares me about Terrain Armstedt-his actual skill & talent as o-lineman

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Ernie, did TT say he wanted to add speed?

  • Cgoodness13

Think he’s hinting at a CB at #11 if Johnson is off the board

    • nativesandiegan

Could be. I think Rhodes would be worth it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Somebody asked him how come he is carving up the Charger D? He skirted answering.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

He is going to take the best player available whether we need him or not. But I don’t think we are really in a position to say no to much. But he better not pick up Geno Smith as the BPA. That would be dumb. He doesn’t believe in prioritizing needs (he said that –about the prioritizing)

    • nativesandiegan

Calm down. He’s not drafting Geno. He also looks at overall BPA – comparing to other years. Don’t take everything at face value. He will look at overall team needs. When asked specifically if we will draft o-line, he smirked and said “Yes, we will draft offensive linemen” with a smile. He doesn’t want to give away anything to other teams, but he knows that everyone knows we MUST draft OL. He’s not dumb. Just breathe in &out; in & out, & give the man a chance. He’s been in the War Room 19 years. He hasn’t been that guy with the final say yet, but in his refreshingly humble manner he seems to be “champing at the bit” to make that first choice; even if that choice is to trade down. He seems to be confident enough (in his own quiet way) to buck the tide and trade up if the situation calls for it.
This year’s draft is the most unusual (especially for the Chargers) that I’ve seen in nearly 50 years of following the draft. I can envision a scenario that would be in our best interest to trade up. NOT in the egotistical, overbearing, delusionary manner of our former GM, but in a calm, calculated manner. So go ahead & chastise me, but that’s what I feel. (Do you think he’ll give me a job as a PR guy?

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

He was with the Colts for a long time, yes? Who did he draft for the Colts? And you can’t count Andrew Luck.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

cant give him credit or takeaway anything from him… in the end, was not his decision

      • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

You are right. Trying to get clear exactly what experience this guy has.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

he learned under Bill Polian and he is one of the most respected GMs of the game. that is really all I pull from it

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

we really will learn with this first season on the players he let go and the players he brought in.

  • NvrTllMeThOdds

Telesco’s smart. He could have said that for the benefit of other GMs. He could have been trying to make it seem like the team is strongly considering drafting Tavon Austin at 11, so that some of the teams behind us, like Minn, might reach out to try to trade up with us to get him. But I really don’t see them taking a WR in the 1st round, especially if DX stays, which we should know by this Friday.

“Could that mean we are adding a new safety like Kenny Vaccaro? Could it mean that we look to add a middle linebacker like Alec Ogletree? Possibly a speedy receiver on the roster? An offensive linemen like Terron Armstead in the second round?”

Did you just write that Ernie? Lol….that would be my wet dream right there ; )

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that is what i am here for…. WAIT :)

  • Rob Base

What if he goes for LB or SS with 11th pick?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      I’ll do a little jig!!! That’s what… Hahaha.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Wouldn’t hate at all. So many different areas we can get better in, almost any selection is a good one

      • Rob Base

That comment Weddle said about the revolving door gets me thinking Vacaro would be sick at the 11th pick. Man I’m getting hyped up!

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

The way I see it… Use that 11th pick wisely. O-Line is clearly the biggest hole. But, if you can’t get a LT for Philip, then get your best D player some help! He’s had just as much of a revolving door next to him.. doing all the work. Personally, 11 is too high of a pick for a guard.. I know people will strongly disagree. Even for two awesome guards like them. SS has BEEN the thorn in our side forever, and we missed out on Barron & Smith last year.. Both good starters on their teams.. And they DON’T have Weddle standing next to them! You can find guards in later rounds. Find that strong safety… We’ll be menacing over the middle!

          • boltingindiego

not at 11 for vaccaro trade down then get him.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Saints want him, worked him out today, and pick at 15. I haven’t heard of any trade partners before the Rams at 16. Besides, I don’t buy the draft hype, at all. The BPA, and draft order, is relative to opinion, and decided by analysts with an agenda. I often wonder if they deliberately say bad things about players so their draft stock will fall, and the teams THEY want to pick up said player ends up getting a “steal”. When they were always the best player.

          • boltingindiego

that is a good question but I think most draft experts want to be known as the best so than they wouldn’t let their favorite team or teams get in their way of analyzing players and ranking them.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yeah… I Was stirring the conspiracy pot a little there.. I can agree with what you are saying though. I think we are going to get a good player, no matter what.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hey Pete…. guess who i am liking more and more as the draft gets closer? :) You will love it!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Patterson? J/K.. muahahaha!

    • Cgoodness13

Not really needs right now, they’d be backups anyways. 4th and 5th round picks I’d suppose. We need starters at LT, CB, MLB, not backups, so take them rounds 1-3

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

So you believe in bront bird and a busted up Brandon Taylor? Or Jonas mouton?

        • Cgoodness13

          1) English as back up OLB is good enough, another one for depth really
2)Brandon Taylor managed to start over bigby eventually, but had a unfortunate injury, wasn’t injured at all I think during his college career (where he was the captain of one of the best DB fields in ncaa history)
          3) I did mentiom we should draft a MLB in between rounds 1-3 right? It’s kinda clearly written in my previous post.
          4) don’t hate on me because I strongly disagree with you wanting to take that one WR you want so bad thy we have no need really at all for, Floyd, DA, VB are all talented WRs, not that it really matters though when in I think 2010, Rivers managed to have the greatest season of his career throwing to I think over 10 different WRs do to injury, plus you can’t make a case for that WR you want so bad for Returns with royal healthy and solid backups like goodman and woodhead.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

where was the hate in my comment? why would i hate on you because i like tavon austin and you dont? you must not see the kinds of crap i get for some of my opinions. i will respect you for what you all think and it has never been different.

but, you previous comment wasn’t so clear, because you said that LB and SS were not really needs right now, but then you say MLB should be drafted in rounds 1-3. Sorry. That doesn’t seem too clear.

          • Cgoodness13

You said I must believe in busted up Taylor, he’s not busted up, he might have a break out year next year. I said OLB, not MLB, mentioned English as a backups as well, seems pretty clear. And when have I said I never liked Austin? I said we have no need for him, it would be a useless pick with royal on the team.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

where was the hate in my comment?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Ernie… Can you please sit in chapstick, because my lips are cracking on Main Street. You hold your tongue so much, I’m honestly amazed! You are a good man. Mostly because this clearly has not been my policy…
CG13.. cut the guy a little slack… it’s not easy being cheesy.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

No offense… but, throwing to all of those different receivers in 2010 still didn’t get us to the playoffs. People forget the awful moments of that year.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I feel the need… The need… For speed! Hit me with it Goose!
