San Diego Chargers 5 Round NFL Mock Draft

Time to go ahead and try to project who the Chargers will get in their first five rounds of the NFL Draft. This projection will be more on where I want them to select over who I think they really would go with.

1st Round: WR Tavon Austin
If you have watched anything about me and this draft, then you know I have this obsession with Tavon Austin. The three top left tackles will be gone and you have to get the best player available. I would be tempted to select Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper with the selection, but when you can find another pretty good guard in the next round, you go with another impact player.

2nd Round: OG Larry Warford
We didn’t make that selection of an offensive lineman in the first round and I am sure that will have some people wondering what the heck we are doing. Warford would be an immediate starter on the offensive line at guard.

3rd Round: LB Kiko Alonso
If Alonso is there in the 3rd, it would be tough for the Chargers to pass on the kid. He comes with some baggage, but he would start in the middle of the defense immediately with Donald Butler and would make an impact.

4th Round: CB Tyrann Mathieu
I would love Mathieu. If he didn’t smoke so much weed, he would be one of the top corners available. Luckily I only care about the football field.

5th Round: OT Ricky Wagner
We need to bring in that offensive line help. Any of the guys past the first round seem to need some grooming before being tossed out on the line. Bring in Wagner and let him learn behind some vets and he can be the next right tackle.

As you can tell, I am not afraid to take risks. The left tackles are not there, so the Chargers need to find a vet to play the spot. They will have to go after Max Starks or Bryant McKinnie to fill that hole. Also, I would try and bring back Corey Lynch as an insurance policy for Brandon Taylor.

Round out that defense by trying to bring back Shaun Phillips and Quentin Jammer on cheap 1-year deals. Have to convince them that they are role players now too. That probably won’t work with both, but still possible.

5 rounds and 4 players that will contribute significantly next season and a player you can try and groom for the future. Rounds 6 and 7 you can try and find some depth at nose tackle and select that sleeper running back.

I’ve seen storm troopers shoot more accurate than this!!!!! Lol

    • Cgoodness13

Lets not try to draft for player replacements that will be needed in the future with huge holes that need filling right now. I’m against drafting a WR, OLB, and RB simply because we have talent, starters, and depth at those right now. Remember, just because LT is a important position, doesn’t mean it’s more important than other positions, I wouldn’t be surprised if Johnson is available.

What player replacements in the future? Tavon would be an immediate contributor. Warlord will be a starter. Alonso a starter. Mathieu would get a ton of action.

What outside linebacker? Tell me your 5 rounds

        • Cgoodness13

          1) Johnson (if not available which I doubt, miller or warmack)
          2) trufant or Taylor (or if they are off the board fluker, Watson, warford, or long)
          3) ta’amu or Wolfe for depth
4)Taylor (de from South Carolina) or simon for more depth
          5) a center for more depth, maybe Brewster or molk

        • Cgoodness13

I mentioned OLB because a lot of people thinks that Ingram is the only OLB we have on our roster for some reason :/ dunno why with Johnson an English. And why would we need to draft a WR except to replace Floyd?

          • boltingindiego

last year we had 5 olb’s this year 3. we need at least 1 more.

          • Cgoodness13

True, I think we have another 2 on the roster though. Just mentioned them becaus of their talent. Yes I believe English has talent, he was never used under norv and wa a first round pick and talent.

          • Cgoodness13

Maybe we could convert a DE into one? Or maybe FA sign one.

          • boltingindiego

no de’s we have could convert to olb so its either draft, undrafted or fa’s to to find our olb’s.

          • Cgoodness13

Ya what ever works. From what I’ve read bird can play OLB also. I really want to see English getting reps though

  • Sergio Quintero

Love Tavon as a player, too much of luxury/complementary player for me, but can’t conceive a draft where a LT is not taken in round 1-2.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I wonder why we would take one if he is just going to sit on the bench for the year developing. It would be a wasted pick in my opinion.

      • Cgoodness13

Yes because clary is suuuuccchhhh a talent that he should start all season lol

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

What left tackle past the top 3 would be a definite starter next season? Do we reach for Watson?

      • Sergio Quintero

Watson, Armstead, Pugh are better then the current LT on the roster

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Better than what we have, but should they be starting? That’s why we add a vet left tackle with this draft

          • boltingindiego

i agree vet this year grab a lt to groom for one year.

        • Gunnar Martin

I think that if Johnson is gone and we don’t trade for Rodger Saffold from the Rams then we have wait until next year to draft our future left tackle. There are some pretty promising LTs in the 2014 draft.

  • Rob Base

Great picks but I think 4th pick should be Tharold Simon.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Could have gone with Leon McFadden at that spot too

      • Rob Base

For sure but I think Telesco may want bigger CB’s. I honestly like Poyer but he will be gone by 2nd or 3rd round.

  • Cgoodness13

I’m wondering who’s starting job you think warford will take? Troutman or Rinehart?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Left guard. One of those guys is the right guard

      • Cgoodness13

I’m think if we get warmack then we should start troutman at RG and warmack at LG and run some nasty smash mouth running

        • Gunnar Martin

Don’t the better run blocking lineman typically play on the right side of the line? Or maybe I’m just making things up, I’ve gone a bit insane recently.

          • Cgoodness13

Wasn’t dielman on the left side? Either way Mathews averages 5 yards a play lol

          • Gunnar Martin

Seriously why don’t we just make all of our linemen awesome run blockers. That way we won’t have to worry where to put em haha

  • 619chargers4life

no sdsu prospects i.e McFadden C’mon man lol jp

  • NateDogg85

We’re not gonna take Tavon Austin. If we were we wouldn’t have signed Danny Woodhead.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

They don’t even play the same position

      • Gunnar Martin

Yeah it was kind of an irrelevent comment but I can see where he’s coming from. They’re both that small, quick playmaker who can return kicks.
Whatever he means, I think it would be a terrible idea to get Austin. We already have his position pretty well covered, and even if we want to upgrade it that can wait for next year. I know it’s not a great idea to try to draft by position need, but when there are as many holes on the roster as ours you kind of have to.

  • 209 chargers

This is a sad mock draft… Reminds me of A.J. Smith..a bunch of reach picks

  • Gunnar Martin

Who else gets more depressed each time they look at another mock draft? It’s so sad to see how far we have fallen from our amazing 2006 season (and others, but that year was especially remarkable).

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.sizemore1 Robert Sizemore

why would we take Tavon Auston in the first when we could get Steadman Baily in the 3rd. We don’t really need another slot reciever (which is what Auston is) we need someone who can run a post and stretch the field. Not putting Tavon down but if anyone checked out the WVU games steadman was always matched up the the other teams best corners leaving Tavon to run free.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.sizemore1 Robert Sizemore

They need to trade down and take DJ Fluker. Since they are switching to a zone blocking scheme he’ll be able to have more success earlier. then you can still take Warford in the second. By trading down you pick up an extra pick and have the possibility of getting Steadman Bailey (more of what we need) Darius Slay CB steal, Leon Mcfadden CB depth/nickle and Reid Fragel OT with great resume/work ethic and depth to the OL could possibly start on the right side.
