Chargers In Oklahoma To Check Out Lane Johnson

The San Diego Chargers offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris and Exec VP of Football Ops Johns Spanos were spotted in Oklahoma working out Lane Johnson, via Marty Caswell. This could be there last look at Johnson to see if this is the player that they want to make a move for.

It will be tough for Lane Johnson to fall all the way down to 11, but if he is there it is expected for the Chargers to race up to the podium and make their selection. If the Chargers were to get Lane Johnson, they probably will have to make a trade up toward the top of the draft to select him.

Johnson is one of the top 3 left tackles in the draft and there are a ton of teams in need of a guy that can protect their quarterback’s tail.

If you didn’t know, the Chargers need a left tackle. But you already knew that… I HOPE!

Do you think that the Chargers will end up with Lane Johnson playing at left tackle next season?

(Begin Sarcasm) Wait, we need a left tackle? I thought we were going to keep Jared Gaither another few years. (End sarcasm)

Ernie and/or anybody else out there: What does it mean that some of these guys are coming out to visit the Chargers, some are not, and then the Chargers are also going (traveling) to see some? Granted, some of the traveling is the Pro Days. But why are some coming here?

    • RussinSactown

I would assume they want to test and interview them, get a feel for who they were as a player so they could factor that into their war room selection.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think it depends also on where some people are… like Chargers coaches are our and about for Pro Days, so while they are close they might as well hit up someone. but that is my guess

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Crazy things have to happen for us to get him at 11. I love crazy things, here’s a scenario in which we can get him.

    1. Chiefs : Luke Joeckel
    2. Jags: Dion Jordan/Geno Smith either or
    3. Raiders: Sharrif Floyd
    4. Eagles: Eric Fisher
    5. Lions: Dee Milliner
    6. Browns: Ez Ansah
    7. Cards: Chance Warmack
    8. Bills: Tavon Austin/Geno Smith either or
    9. Jets: Star L
    10. Titans: Johnathen Cooper
11: Bolts: The Huge Unit (my new nickname for him)

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      i love it

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Then we also have to hope the Dolphins don’t trade up and nab him right in front of us too. Bastards with all their extra picks!

        • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

News starting to come out that the Eagles are going for Geno Smith. They were writing about it on NFL.com

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            please make that happen!

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That would be excellent, we need a couple things like that to happen to get him. I was going page to page for all the teams that have worked him out. It seems everyone just flat out knows he wont get past us at @11 not sure if thats a good thing.

Remember when B. Werner, Mingo, D. Moore, C. Patterson and Jarvis Jones were all in top consideration as well? We need one of those guys to jump ahead and maybe even another QB. I wish there were 2-3 worthy QB’s we would be money.

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Yep. omg, I remember Werner. He is sinking fast. Some have him down at the end of the 1st round.

          • boltingindiego

yah he sinked fast was considered top 5 early in the draft process.

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Nassib and Barkley starting to show up, but I cannot imagine they would be in the first 10. That would sort of be outrageous.

The wild card is Miami…yeah, they will probably move up, but how far up?

          • boltingindiego

if any team selects those 2 qb’s in the top 10 should have their owner fire whoever voted for that selection.

          • Sergio Quintero

As it stands right now I can’t see anything more then just one of the guards making it 11. I’m hoping for the best, setting the expectations much lower.

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Daniel Jeremiah was getting some news from Eagles’ people that they were thinking about Smith. I don’t know. Why would they tell at this point?

          • nativesandiegan

Probably Smokescreen. From what I heard earlier, they need LT. Hopefully they feel stronger need elsewhere

    • Sergio Quintero

It come down to Lions & Cardinals, I just think the Lions will see the mess that Rivers is with a bad Oline, and just go lets protect our 20 million dollar man.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I think they want Tyrann Mathieu with their first pick..haha

    • BlueBoltFan

How about this for a terrifying scenario:

      1. Luke Joeckel
      2. Dion Jordan
      3. Shariff Floyd
      4. Eric Fisher
      5. Dee milliner
      6. Lane Johnson
      7. Barkevious Mingo
      8. Star Lotulelei
      9. Chance Warmack
      10. Johnathan Cooper

The only saving grace is Geno Smith. One of those players (probably one of the last four) will fall if Geno Smith gets drafted. If not, 11 becomes appealing trade bait for a team looking for a QB. I would hope.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Xavier Rhodes? Vaccaro? Still would go Tavon

        • BlueBoltFan

Bucky Brooks sums up my issues with tavon Austin better than I could,

“Now, I definitely see the similarities in playing styles, but neither
Harvin nor Jackson has made a significant impact as a No. 1 receiver in
the NFL. (Harvin has never posted a 1,000-yard season, while Jackson has
surpassed that mark just twice in five years.) And there haven’t been
many 5-foot-8, 174-pound receivers who have taken the league by storm.
          That’s why I can’t fully endorse Austin’s rise as a potential top-10
pick, even with his ability to score from anywhere on the field. The NFL
remains a big man’s game, and it’s hard for a diminutive pass catcher
to function as a legitimate No. 1 receiver. I believe Austin can be an
explosive complementary player, but you don’t take role players early in
          the draft.”

Not saying that’s gospel truth by any stretch, but I share his take.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I understand that. I think slot receivers are becoming more and more of a weapon in the league. But I do understand where the concerns are and I could see why people would pass on him.

      • Sergio Quintero

Hope beyond hope you can trade down, I probably would take Ansah. Ansah should go ahead of Mingo.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Ya if this happened we would be looking at Ansah most likely. Thats cool too

          • BlueBoltFan

Yeah, Ansah would be a respectable consolation prize. Mingo is a better speed rusher but Ansah has JPP type potential.

    • nativesandiegan

Looks great to me. Re: LJ playing RT. Watched YouTube video vs Texas. He played LT & RT. His athleticism gave him great burst off the snap for great run blocking; they usually ran to his side. At goal line he kind of burrowed through the traffic at thigh height and runner followed him into endzone. As you would expect, he was very good in pass blocking (not perfect but close & will improve). He also was great at 2nd level and made 2 & 3 blocks in succession on same play. Hard to believe he’s only started at LT for 1 yr, & he’ll only improve with experience. Personally, I would trade up to get him if necessary even though we’re building through the draft. IMO he’s a potentially top franchise LT, & he’s already very good with good attitude.

  • Cgoodness13

    I still believe he’s overhyped

    • boltingindiego

hes a top 15 pick but is a reach in the top 10.

      • Cgoodness13

Thank you, warmack will probally end up in the eagles or cardinals, at most titans.

  • Rob Base

Why they checking him out unless they intend to trade up? Less picks if they do that.

  • Cgoodness13

Am I the only one who sees him more as a RT at seasons start? If we do get him, I’d rather have Dunlap at LT and Johnson at RT for a bit if not whole season, rather have dunlaps experience protecting rivers blindside and Johnson getting ready to trade positions with him eventually when he’s gotten up to the nfl level.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Go read up on Dunlap. They were ready to throttle him in Philly. He is not the answer. Seriously, there are Philly sportscasters and videos all over the internet with anti-King Dunlap ranting. Where did you get the idea that he is good?

      • Cgoodness13

He was poorly coached, had little help inside, and anyone but clary lol

        • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

          You have a point there.

      • Brandon Rios

I work with a huge Eagles fan and he told me King Dunlap is garbage and can’t run block for shit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Anybody know anything about Barrett Jones? Read something that he and Armstead could be this year’s draft steal.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Love Barrett Jones. Can play any position on the o-line, but will be a future center. Might be available in 3rd because he is coming back from an injury.

  • BlueBoltFan

I don’t think we’ll get Johnson but if we can’t trade down and it looks like the other top candidates are going to be gone, trading up has to at least be considered a possibility.

  • blu3ny3llow

Man I just want the draft to be here man I love Lane Johnson but I think there is TOO MANY needs for them to move up to get him though might be worth it ..but not if they can’t fill a hole on D cus of one less pick…..I’m so anxious/excited for the draft ….AAAAHHHH

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

They’re just doing their due diligence. I don’t foresee him falling, or us trading up. I wonder if he likes In-N-Out, too? Mmmmmmm.

  • Tom Spalsbury

I hope so. But i wouldn’t bet on it.
