Tavon Austin vs Cordarrelle Patterson

What if the top 3 tackles are gone? Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel and Lane Johnson… gone. And Chance Warmack and Jonathan Cooper are gone? What if Tom Telesco wanted to choose a receiver, who would you want him to pick – Tavon Austin or Cordarrelle Patterson?

If I had to choose, it would be Cordarrelle Patterson. He is big, physical and can break defenders ankles. Philip Rivers needs that number 1 receiver again in order for our offense to be a passing threat again.

Tavon Austin is an amazing player. He can play running back, receiver and is a returning specialist. The only question for him is his size. 5-foot-8 for a receiver is small, but he will probably play slot in the NFL.

I wouldn’t be disappointed if either of these guys are chosen. Both guys will be automatic day 1 starters.

So who would you choose Bolt fans?

    I didn’t ask him to write it… I promise

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Whatever you say, Ernie.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Hahaha

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m just gonna guess but I’m thinking the only WR we get is that Jr college guy. See if he can mesh with Rivers then you don’t even need to use that pick for offense. I don’t know why but I really think were gonna get that dude.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

If anything, I would ask someone to write “Ernie has lost his mind, selecting Tavon Austin is just dumb…”! Pete? Haha

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Lol… It’s already written. I just didn’t want to send it to you on a Sunday ; )

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

And that is part of your genius… Weekends are slow!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

In all seriousness.. at least we have a shot at getting a playmaker, no matter who we pick. And that playmaker won’t be at Norv’s leisure to use beyond sparingly.. I hope.

  • Rob Base

    Austin all day!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Both of these guys are like WHAT?!!!!! Makin fools miss, and cutting across field.. taking over games.. keeping plays alive!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

They are ridiculous when they have the ball in their hands!!! Ridonkulous

      • tubbs45

those little cut moves are just so fast…

  • zeus619

Austin seems like a pure slot WR with game changing abilities. Size isn’t the only difference between the two WR’s, experience is also a factor. Austin has played much longer than Patterson in collegiate level. I believe both players would help SD’s passing game but I believe Austin should be ranked higher on their draft board.

  • arnie

    Never. Question. Size.
It is a cheap cliché, and the list is pretty extensive on “under sized” players.

    TT might get them both.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Both? This sounds interesting… do tell.

      • arnie

Nah just wishful thiinking. Both players have play making abilities. However, their size my cause them to fall in the draft boards. Where there could be a cenerio, by not getting the LT he wants, could trade down and pull a Houdini.

On that note, i could see getting Austin. Three things stand out. He plays with a chip on his shoulder, you can see it in his body language. He’s always running downhill and his speed is awesome. if for no other reason, i would like to see someone in bolts, playing with an attitude.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

One of my favorite receivers ever is Steve Smith…attitude, tiny… Just like Tavon

          • JoseSD

Sorry Ernie but the Steve Smith comparison stops at the height, Steve Smith is one of the toughest WRs in the game. He plays bigger than his size, blocks hard, and over powers DBs. Despite his height he plays on the outside primarily not the slot. Austin is just a speedster, and he definitely makes plays but spending the 11th pick on a slot WR is a mistake. If there’s no O line at 11 trade down get Armstead, Kyle Long, or Menelik Watson in the second Rd

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

You are absolutely right… Comparing him to Steve Smith is a little overboard. There are similarities, but Smith is one of the littlest dudes that can play on the outside and is one of the toughest SOBs in the league.
Still, the ability to move in the open field and the height of course.

          • jamfed

i like Steve Smith too. And I always seem to draft him on my FF teams and he drives me crazy. ON one year OFF another. Maybe it’s his QB, but little guys tend to get nicked up easier. Speed guys too. A little tweak to the hammy and they become average.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I pick him every year too… So I feel that frustration. But part of the ups and downs is because other teams had nothing else on that offense to worry about. Plus, Smith is injury prone like you said. Any receiver with a hammy issue is no threat tho

  • Cgoodness13

Warmack then, if not warmack then miller.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

We don’t really know if PR can still throw to little targets anymore, he sucked at it horribly last year but lets hope that was all o-line. Imagine he can’t and we have Austin/Woodhead and Royal, that would suck. Austin would still make plays though its almost like he mastered the angles of making guys miss.

    • Sergio Quintero

I thinks its more that Meachem has the ball skills of a stone handed CB, Rivers had success with Eric Parker, Keenan McCardell early in his career.

  • tubbs45

Man… If we stay at 11 and all three OTs are gone and a few other top prospects are gone… It would be hard to pass up Austin, don’t get me wrong I love Patterson… But Austin is so f’in fast and a quad threat punts, kick, RB, WR…. Wow…

    • Sergio Quintero

Under that circumstance. lets trade down and get Austin, should be able to drop to 14-15 and still get him.

  • jamfed

I’m a Patterson fan, but I do like Austin. Both guys can play WR, run reverses, return punts and kicks. Austin does have elite speed, but Patterson is VERY close. They both have similar running abilities, but totally different sizes. if I had to chose, it would be Patterson, but if you look as SD’s current WR’s, they’re all BIGS. Creating mismatches is probably more important with a mixture of receivers So Austin should be the choice. If RIvers can make DX look good, then he could make Austin amazing (or vice versa).

  • sanford peisner

I hope we don’t chose a wide receiver in round 1. Feel if tackles are gone a corner back, guard or DT would help out more. Even an inside linebacker or safety Give Rivers some time and he will make wide outs look good.

  • http://twitter.com/BReisinger86 Brandon Reisinger

I think we need to talk about Kenny Vaccaro as an option at #11…. Need a thread where we can talk about Vaccaro *cough* Ernie *cough*

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahaha…. its in the queue :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Vaccaro is starting to show up as the Chargers’ pick at 11. And looks like Lane Johnson is going to be gone. Talk going around the Miami is thinking of trading up for Johnson. Now the question is how far do they think they have to trade up to get Johnson. I think they have to go at least the 5 slot

      • Sergio Quintero

For me its pick 6, which according to the classic Draft chart: they would give up 1st (11), 2nd (45), get 1st (6) and the Browns 4th (68).

      • http://twitter.com/BReisinger86 Brandon Reisinger

I’m not so sure Johnson is someone we would be going after to be honest. If he is gone before the 11th pick i’m not going to shed a tear over it and if he is there at 11 i’m not so sure we shouldn’t go in a different direction. At LT i think we should be either be looking at trading up and grabbing Fisher IF possible. or a better option imo would be trading up in the 2nd rd. and getting Armstead

        • Sergio Quintero

I’m more of the position to trade up for Justin Pugh, he won’t be pro bowler but should be a solid player and a definite upgrade to what the chargers currently have.
Better yet if you can trade down in the first, you are in better position to trade up in the second.
Maybe the best scenario for the chargers is to trade down to pick 14-16, still get one the guards, and trade up in the second for someone like Pugh. Unlikely, but I don’t love the idea of trading up for a LT, with a team with some many holes.

          • http://twitter.com/BReisinger86 Brandon Reisinger

Tons of different scenarios that i would be happy with, and i think any of those 2nd tier LTs would be great! I don’t know much about Pugh ill have to watch some tape. I said Armstead cause i have watched some of his tape and he’s just really impressive in run blocking, didn’t really see much tape of pass protection

  • thafonz619

I can’t wait to see who responds to this lol, but if all of the top linemen are gone at 11, the chargers shouldn’t pic either. Wr is not the position in dyer need, which there are a lot of holes needing to be fill. all our receiving corps need is a different direction tofollow which they have in telasco and McCoy. I say trade down to get more picks, which would benefit in the long run since this draft is filled with players that could start immediately in the late 1st and mid 2nd rd. manti teo, Desmond trufant, jamar Taylor from Boise st to name a few. the only player in the draft after the linemen are gone that I feel is worth the 11 is dee millner. but remember, I named 2 in later rds……..cbs that is. so what your take bolt fans.

    • me

      u r right

  • RussinSactown

Both of these guys are an ESPN highlight reel waiting to happen.

  • Sergio Quintero

For me its Austin, hate to be mean but Patterson is really dumb, will take a long time to learn the offense and pro game. At the end of the day I would let another team take the risk on Patterson. Austin is a true go getter in terms of his personality, his tape is amazing, plus the slot position should be a very important position in the McCoy offense.

If you were the chargers would you want to hire Patterson, this is his personality:
    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-first-draft/0ap2000000153020/First-Draft-Cordarrelle-Patterson

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i am with you on the slot position being important… some people seem to be discounting that position when i bring up tavon

      • Sergio Quintero

Working on a trade for Brandon Albert/Roger Saffold story, I think both are better players then whoever you get in the 2nd round to play LT.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

not sure a trade for albert would work with out salary cap restrictions.

          • Sergio Quintero

They is always room for creativity with signing bonus, if they wanted to get it done they would. The bigger problem is I don’t think KC wants to trade him in the division.

  • me

there’s no way we should pick wr in 1st round. we already have floyd brown meachem royal guaranteed on the roster, w/alexander prob coming back that’s 5 wr right there, these rookies may be good, but guys that were explosive in college w/the ball in their hands are never as good in the pros, everybody’s faster etc…we have lots of other ways to help our team before wr should be taken…db, olb, ol, i think tt will do whats best

  • Minzer28

    CP!!!
