San Diego Chargers Draft Watch: Tavon Austin

I have been on a Tavon Austin kick as of late. I figured I might as well write a post about it since I haven’t even put one of those together, solely focused on us selecting Tavon Austin. Last season, I had this same kind of love for Mark Barron and he ended up getting selected before we even had a chance. Will Tavon Austin be available for us to select at 11.

I know a ton of you think I am nuts to select a wide receiver with our first round pick. The best depth on the team is at wide receiver right now and there are so many holes in other places.

I am a firm believer of selecting the best player available and I think Tavon Austin could be that guy. Why wouldn’t you want a talent like that?

First off, slot receivers are huge weapons for teams now. Victor Cruz. Wes Welker. We don’t have that type of receiver on our team.

Vincent Brown looks like he should be the starter on the outside. Danario Alexander isn’t a slot receiver. Mike McCoy is talking about using Danny Woodhead out in the slot already. Just get the ball in Tavon’s hands and he makes things happen. He can be our kick returner and punt returner.

A left tackle won’t be available in the first round. We need to get weapons on offense. Get the best player available.

A tiny tear still rolls down my face when I think about it… Lol.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Omg… Could you imagine him and Weddle!!! Dang… I would love Matt Elam out of this draft class, if he can sneak to the 2nd round

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

          I’ll take it!

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I get pissed when I see Harrison Smith making plays for the Vikings, too.. he stepped in, and started nicely. I watch Mercilus, and start having buyers remorse. Hopefully, Ingram can beast up this season.. Or, I may start to feel jipped. Good old AJ, right?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Yea.. I feel the exact same way

  • Supercharger77

If the chargers use pick #11 on a wr I would be pissed. No way all three left tackles an both guards are gone by then.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

But you can get a guard later… Left tackles probably will be gone

      • JoseSD

I kinda like Kyle Long to play guard in round 2

      • Supercharger77

Not a guard like warmack or cooper. If anything take vaccaro at safety or star. To be honest with troutman and the free agents they bought in taking a guard first round may be a waste.

  • JoseSD

Barron would have been awesome to have, but I don’t understand your obsession with Tavon Austin, Ernie. Victor Cruz, Percy Harvin,, Wes Welker are fast, small, and shifty but 5’8 is way too small IMO. Wasting such a high pick on him with so many needs is a mistake. If there’s no O linemen left then I say best available DEFENSIVE player

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

But who is that player? Who is worthy of that pick? Is Vaccaro worthy of that pick? Rhodes?

      • JoseSD

Vaccaro or maybe Star would be good options, what do you think of trading a 3rd or possibly a 2nd to the Rams for Roger Saffold, he’s pissed that Jake Long will play LT. Btw the article is titled Sam Diego instead of San

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Dang it… That’s what i get for posting through my phone… Sigh

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

            Lol…

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Saffold would be good, but it could end up being a one year rental… Then that price tag becomes expensive

        • boltingindiego

star would be a great option but if its vacarro trade down. We could then get him later or cyprien and get some extra picks along the way.

      • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

        Vaccaro is definitely worthy, imo.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I have some question marks on Vacarro, but there are question marks on a lot f players there.

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I like his versatility, and toughness.

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I just want a playmaker in the middle of that defense. Safety… NT… LB. Doesn’t matter.. Playmakers in all 3, ideally.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I remember reading a draft profile on him and Texas fans questioned how good he was… Questioned his tackling on the open field and if he was worth a first round pick

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Yeah… I kinda remember you posting they a while back. It doesn’t have to bee him, (although I think he’d work for us).. But, we need a beast in the middle.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I know what you are saying

      • Cgoodness13

        Ogletree, milliner, Rhodes, vaccoro, etc

        • boltingindiego

those guys are way to high at 11 best option would trade down if the 2 guards and 3 ots are gone.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Ogletree might be a reach… Honestly though everyone at this slot could boom or bust… Best shot at pro bowls could be the guards.

    • Cgoodness13

      Welker speedy and shifty?

  • Rob Base

I say hell ya! He would be an instant impact for our Bolts. What if Meachum and Royal dont produce again and say we dont get Alexander back. We need a play maker like Austin. Question is would Telesco take him at 11? The 2nd rd Telseco could trade back and get an additional 3rd or 4th rd pick there’s plenty of depth in those rounds. But like I’ve said before I’m no expert. Thoughts?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

You know I would be down…. There is depth on this draft for the positions we need

  • Cgoodness13

So lets pretend that guards don’t matter and cox can cover 2 receivers at once, sure lets pick a WR!!!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

It’s not like we don’t have other picks.. It’s a deep draft for corners

      • Brandon Rios

        Mathieu in the 4th round

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

give it to me!!! would love it. he could return some kicks

  • RussinSactown

If there are none of the top 5 linemen available, trade down and stockpile.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joey.s.warner Joey Shawn Warner

You can still find quality linemen in the draft besides the first round. Our offense is looking the same and nothing is changing. Danny Woodhead and Tavon add speed to a team that desperately needs it. We can also hopefully get Mathieu but I think he’ll be gone by the second round. I don’t know about you but I know for sure we can find a quality left tackle in the later rounds. Stockpiling is crap.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think Mathieu will be a 3rd round pick at some point…. could still be a steal in the 3rd

  • Pels04

I would love to have Austin but i just cant see taking him with our 1st pick since we have so many other needs. You might call me crazy but i think Royal still has the ability to be a threat out of the slot. Specially with McCoy as our HC now

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i do wonder why Royal walked away from McCoy while he was in Denver.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

It still says “Sam” Diego when you get a comment reply for this thread… SAM DIEGO…. SUPER CHARGERS.. rad.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Haha… I know… It makes me sad. Reminds me of my epic fail. Sadly, don’t know how to fix that part. Send me your email spinning, I will set you up on the site. Somehow, I don’t know how I will get it since I can’t get your emails. Maybe send me a twitter dm… I am running out of ideas. Ha
