Should the Chargers Trade Up In Draft For Lane Johnson?

The Cleveland Browns might be looking to trade out of the 6th spot in the NFL Draft. Should the San Diego Chargers look to move up into that spot or move up somewhere in the draft to select Oklahoma LT Lane Johnson?

What would it take to move up to the 6th spot from pick 11? Our 1st rounder and our 3rd? That seems pretty heavy. That should be two starters for the team right there. Is Lane Johnson going to be the difference maker that we need?

If you think that Lane Johnson is going to be an absolute stud, then we do whatever it takes to move up and select him. I would rather have Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher, but Johnson seems to be the easiest target to acquire.

Lane Johnson… Considering I didn’t even want to draft the guy a few months ago, I don’t think I would trade up in the draft to select him. I would be alright selecting him with pick 11, but losing draft picks suck.

With the 11th pick, we could have Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper or TAVON AUSTIN or whoever the heck else you want and with the 3rd round pick we could have Leon McFadden or Montee Ball or whoever. Those are two quality players. Trading up doesn’t sound too awesome to me. Would you make move up in the draft?

No. As tempting as it might be we can’t afford to give the Browns picks that WE NEED to use.

    • BlueBoltFan

You hit the nail on the head. The team has too many holes to give away picks. Besides, there may be some guys in the 2nd round (Menelick Watson, Terron Armstead) who can get the job done with some good coaching. I’d give them a shot. Worst case scenario, they’re RTs and we go for a LT in 2014.

  • Preston Niedert

No if the chargers trade up take Eric fisher or Luke joeckle. Stay put if they want lane Johnson but with a new general manger who knows.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

dont think lane will be there

  • Dan Locke

Noooooooooo!!! Lane isn’t a sure thing. I’m terrified of him…I’m FINE with the Prime Beef of Warmack or Cooper at 11. We have too many needs to give away picks unless we move all the way up to get Joeckel/Fisher. imo

    • Nick in PB

I kind of agree there! Only Joeckel or Fisher are worth a move up.

  • http://twitter.com/FooIio Calum

We need an OT but I don’t like the trading up scenario. If Fisher drops to 6th (won’t happen) then I say we could consider it. Lane would probably still not be there at 11. It pains me to say it but, given the way the QB trading has gone, we’re not getting our stud LT in this draft. We should sign a vet on a short(ish) term contract, pick either a OG (or if that Lotiei guy drops…) or stud CB, and draft our future LT next season. All those LT that passed on this years draft will be there next season and who are we kidding? We’re picking in the top 15 next year too.

  • Cgoodness13

No warmack is way to good to go after Johnson. People just assume Johnson is worth a top 10 pick because he’s a LT. To be honest, he should be at most a top 15. Warmack is a top 5.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

They show Warmack dropping everywhere. Why? I have no idea and most have Johnson moving up within the top 10 range.

      • BlueBoltFan

With his speed, versatility, athleticism, intelligence, and attitude, Johnson actually has the most upside of pretty much any tackle in the draft. He moved to LT two years ago and is already a 1st round pick. He’s an ascending player at one of the key positions. Warmack is great but plays OG which doesn’t protect the QB’s blindside and only requires a good player for success. Lower priority.

        • Cgoodness13

In that case, the colts should have picked RG3 instead of Luck, but ya have to go with a more proven person than a high risk high return

          • BlueBoltFan

Actually, the Redskins have said that if they would have had the #1 overall pick, they still would have gone with RG3. It was more of a matter of preference. Also Guard is a less valuable position than LT which is why you almost never see guards go in the top 10, but you almost always see LTs go that high. Looks like 3 LTs will go that high this year.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Cuz he is a guard… Guards don’t get much respect

  • JoseSD

Unless Fisher drops to 6 I don’t think they should trade up. I can’t remember the last time there was two elite guards that had top 15 potential, Decastro wasn’t an “elite” prospect. They need to go offensive line first not best player available at the 11th pick. If by some bizarre turn of events all three tackles are taken and so are Cooper and Warmack then they should trade down

    • boltingindiego

that would be crazy 5 o-line men taken in 10 picks.

      • JoseSD

Isn’t it just the bad luck that we’re used to as Chargers fans that the one year we desperately need o line there’s 5 good enough to be picked top 10 and we’re left out with the 11th pick. I kinda wish they had lost against the Steelers or Jets, damn Norv only calls a great game when it doesn’t matter anymore

        • boltingindiego

the jets win hurts the most out of the 2 because with that win we are now behind them in the draft.

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Jets will still do something bizarre that won’t hurt us. There are a few wild card teams that could still do something the draft analysts don’t think they will do. I mean, Buffalo could still go for a QB–so could the Jets.

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

You’re so right!!! We can never catch a break, I swear! I knew the minute the other two tackles decided not to enter the draft that we were hosed. After seeing how bad the Cards, Bears, and Eagles o-line’s were last year… with Jake Long leaving Miami… and with the Chiefs picking first… I knew there was little chance we would get one. This is why all the “pick Johnson at 11″ talk is ludicrous to me. If we get Johnson at 11, I’m buying a Lotto ticket that day!!! And when you think about it, Johnson would have probably been a 2nd round pick anyway, if Lewan & Matthews were still on the board.

          • Nick in PB

You know it Pete! I was thinking the same thing. Early on, it looked good for us and then Matthews and Lewan decided to stay in school. At the time I thought that we would at least have a chance at Johnson but I wasn’t so sure that it wouldn’t be a reach. Now it looks as if all the other teams needed LT’s and O-Lineman are ahead of us in the draft. I think we are going to have to draft our LT in the second round barring some kind of a surprise. We did get McNeil in the second round so maybe it won’t be so bad. We have many needs.

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Great to hear from you again, Nick! It’s been a minute… you my dawg! I occasionally go back over to “the other site”, and leave a comment for RH, but it’s so hit and miss that we can’t connect. If you get a convo going with RaiderHater, tell him I really miss our chemistry. We all had a really great vibe rollin’ before it all went to crap.. hahaha!

    • Sergio Quintero

If you want a nightmare scenario just watch the most recent Charles Davis mock draft on NFL Network:

      http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-draft/0ap2000000155076/Charles-Davis-mock-draft

      • RussinSactown

If that scenario happened, we need to trade the flock down! Stockpile picks.

      • tubbs45

yeah I think that is truly worst case and fairly unlikely. but if it were to happen we need to get the out of the 15, if possible. we could look to the OT Cooper or Fluker

  • Sergio Quintero

If you guys saw Path to the draft today, Kevin Acee was very specific on trading up as a possibility. Acee made a double point that if they want to be fair to Rivers, and give him a realistic chance to succeed he needs a Left Tackle, if he has that LT and still struggles, then its time to cut bait and run, and draft a Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Im down just drafting the best LT on the board with the 2nd or 3rd pick, they would still start and be a huge upgrade over what we have. No trading starters away, who cares what Kevin Acee says he seems to be mad at them for cutting him off the inside scoops.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Wonders never cease. I agree with ya!

    • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I totally agree. No more spoonfed baby food stories for Acee… lol! LT gets picked in the 2nd or 3rd. I REALLY want to see us trade down with the Rams, so they can move up & grab a WR to replace Amendola, before somebody else nabs them first.

  • tbell11

If it was another year then yea but we have too many needs

  • arnie

trading up? if that is the guy they want, and he can help right now? Yes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Telesco said he will let the board talk to him, and that he wasn’t opposed to trading up. I think a trade down with St. Louis is probably more likely. Either way, we get a good player, or extra picks. I’m down with both scenarios.

      • Nick in PB

Agreed. If the LT’s are gone, trade down, but not too far. I like the 2 guards but in reality, guards are a little easier to come by and we did draft one last year. If we did end up with a Warmack or Cooper, it wouldn’t disappoint me. I have butterflies for the draft already! You never know what could happen… we got lucky last year with Ingram falling. Let’s hope a similar situation happens.

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I know! We are probably going to get a good player, no matter what! Let’s hope that TT doesn’t reach, or get fancy… just solid picks!

          • arnie

Exactly. He’s shown he’s the polar opposite of aj. Here’s to hoping that trend continues.

  • Carl Chitwood Jr.

I would argue that, given the cap space, reducing the quantity of players you need to sign out of the draft… in favor of quality players, could pay dividends. So, I would move up to select him if we could package some later round picks than the 3rd round… maybe if they would take a 4th and 5th in addition to the Chargers’ first to move down. But, given the “value” difference, the Browns would be dumb to do that so I don’t think a move-up scenario is really feasible.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Yea. Think there will be other teams trying o get that spot as well. Miami will have more to offer if they want it

  • 1961 Fan

No; trade down and build the team through very worthy and very good players from the second and third rounds. The Bolts have far too many holes to plug and getting competent players in the later rounds coupled with lower salaries and the minimum rookie pay scale you can assemble a very competitive roster.

  • Austin C.

There are rumors the Rams LT Rodger Saffold may be looking to be traded because of the Jake Long signing. How about the Chargers trade the 11th pick for the 16th or 22nd and saffold. Then we would have a solid LT and could address Corner or LB in the first round or hope a guard falls like DeCastro did last year.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bob.rose.378 Bob Rose

      Saffold is no Lane Johnson.

  • tubbs45

The Release of Clabo in the ATL may make things even more interesting. Tackles in free agency are out there, hopefully everyone ahead of the Bolt get some FA LT love! Albert, Winston, Clabo, few other name out there…

I would trade a one and a two for any of the top three LTs. We could have drafted Michael Oher instead of Larry English. Whether Rivers pans out or not, the Chargers have to beef up the O line.
