Chargers NFL Draft Watch: LSU Sam Montgomery

The San Diego Chargers brought in LSU DE Sam Montgomery in for a visit this week, via NFL Draft Zone. This is the first time that I have seen a potential first rounder being brought in for a visit. Maybe the Chargers are hoping that Montgomery falls to them in the 2nd round though, since Montgomery should be a possible late 1st round pick. OR he could be a possibility if we find a partner to trade down with.

Bringing in Montgomery shows that we are looking for a pass rusher on our defense.  Our defense did alright last season, but we struggled to get to the quarterback. We have struggled to get to the quarterback for a couple of seasons now. Montgomery is a 6-foot-3, 262 pound defensive end out of LSU that racked up 7 sacks and 12 tackles for loss and could help in that department.

With the Chargers, he would likely play a little outside linebacker and add depth on the defensive front. I wouldn’t be too impressed with the pick up though. He doesn’t have that “it” factor that I want from a first round pick. I want that first round pick to be a Pro Bowler that can be a difference maker in games. Moving down in the draft and selecting him seems like we are just trying to fill our roster with players. If we get him in the 2nd round though, then I may be a little more excited about the move.

Get us difference makers!
