The Chargers have made a move to open up a little more cap space for this season. They release of Jared Gaither came with a June 1 designation, meaning that his contract will count $6.5M against the cap until June 1, but on June 1 it will drop down to only $2M against the cap and the remaining $4M in dead money will count against our cap next season.
Why would Tom Telesco want to move that money over till next season?
It gives the team an extra $4M to work with this season and that money can be used to sign draft picks. Draft picks won’t be signed till after June 1 anyway. The Chargers have around $7M in cap space right now and can use that to bring in players to fill out the depth on the roster.
It sucks that we have to take a $4M hit next season, but we needed to free up some dough in order to pick up depth around the roster. Now what will Tommy T do with that extra paper in his pocket?
Eric Winston still is a possibility as has been posted by the UT and NFL.com. We still need all kinds of depth on the defensive side of the ball and we still need offensive linemen. The money will be used. We need players. It feels like there are only 20 players on this roster right now. We need more players.
On to the next move.
