Chargers Spread The Dead Money From Jared Gaither Over 2 Seasons

The Chargers have made a move to open up a little more cap space for this season. They release of Jared Gaither came with a June 1 designation, meaning that his contract will count $6.5M against the cap until June 1, but on June 1 it will drop down to only $2M against the cap and the remaining $4M in dead money will count against our cap next season.

Why would Tom Telesco want to move that money over till next season?

It gives the team an extra $4M to work with this season and that money can be used to sign draft picks. Draft picks won’t be signed till after June 1 anyway. The Chargers have around $7M in cap space right now and can use that to bring in players to fill out the depth on the roster.

It sucks that we have to take a $4M hit next season, but we needed to free up some dough in order to pick up depth around the roster. Now what will Tommy T do with that extra paper in his pocket?

Eric Winston still is a possibility as has been posted by the UT and NFL.com. We still need all kinds of depth on the defensive side of the ball and we still need offensive linemen. The money will be used. We need players. It feels like there are only 20 players on this roster right now. We need more players.

On to the next move.

I wonder if they have someone in mind to sign right now or is this just to free up money for the draft picks?

im wondering the same thing… .but it was going to be difficult to sign players to fill the roster and sign draft picks with just that $7M

Remember that list of cost saving cuts you made Ernie? Keep it close, one down, 3 to go.

i know right… can see them all happenin

          • arnie

Every player on that list, is costing the team money, and not producing. Including English

Right? The list of death… lol.

He making room for Winston and cutting Clary I wonder? You think he should get depth on Defense or Offense?

    • arnie

I suspect he isn’t going to leave Coach Pagano hanging. He’s already shored up the O-Line with players that can play right now. I think he’s going defense heavy in regular an supplemental drafts.

This is awesome! The Charges can afford to take the cap hit next year, because they won’t be so deep into re-signing FA in 2014.

Damn, I didn’t even know you could do that, good job TT. Btw how the hell is that guy 40? He looks like he just graduated college or something lol

Now NFL.com has renamed that article and saying the “five bottom of the barrel” teams as to talent. …”no one wants to be on this list”

It about kills me reading all the negative stuff about the Chargers. Other than Rivers, they don’t have anything nice to say.
Man, it is great to get these honors.
