San Diego Chargers Have Released Jared Gaither

The San Diego Chargers took out the trash today by releasing LT Jared Gaither. Gaither still will cost $6 million against the salary cap this year, but we don’t need to see him kicking it next to the trainer’s table or just hiding out in the locker room during practice. Remember that whole body cramp?

That signing was a mess, but we will move on and search for our next left tackle. Will it be Mike Harris or King Dunlap? I just know that we won’t have to deal with the distraction that was “The Big Lazy”.

New hole? Already was a hole on the roster. Still looking to patch it up. We can hope that Lane Johnson falls to us with the 11th pick in the draft or we can try and sign another player to try and fill his spot. If Johnson is not available with the 11th pick, then we might look in the direction of Terron Armstead in the 2nd round. Either way, we have to fill the hole.

Goodbye Big Lazy!

Probably had to be done but that 6 million dollar cap hit is nothing to be happy about.

      • RussinSactown

Sometimes a doctor has to rebreak a bone in order set it right. We take the cap hit and get someone who will do the work.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          truth

        • Per Ola Öberg

and now nothing counts against the cap next year right? We al kinda new that this year they had to much dead weight to do anything about it. Next year they got some real options!

      • Supercharger77

True but cut your losses know and send the right message.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I applaud TT and McCoy for ending this one. After reading the piece about Gaither in the UT, he HAD to go. The morale and the attitude of the rest of the team had to be a consideration.

  • Rob Base

Yahoo I’m so excited that bum is gone! Thanks Telesco you made all of our day!!!

  • http://twitter.com/BReisinger86 Brandon Reisinger

I seriously doubt it was a move to create some cap space. He was a cancer in the locker room! I was 95% sure this move was coming

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Yeah, most of the guys were really resentful and angry about this guy.

  • tubbs45

Baaaah bye enjoy playing madden, you lazy POS.

  • Lee

TT and co. must know something about the draft that we dont because we have some serious holes to fill and we keep releasing people. regardless this release was due a for a while. we must be trying to resign martin with the 500K we get from this

    • Per Ola Öberg

or maybe they got someone on his way in a plane to SD.. or maybe.. or.. ok.. they prob just rebuild for next season hehe

  • BoltUpUK

Don’t see us going LT with pick 11, because I don’t see any of the top three still being available. My view is we go Warmack/Cooper (1 of them should be there) and end up with a O-Line that looks like this (L-R) Dunlap, Rinehart, Hardwick, Cooper/Warmack, Clary with backups of Harris, Molk, Troutman and Schilling. If we manage to bring in Winston (and that’s a big IF) then I see us keeping Clary around as back-up.

I know most fans won’t be best pleased with Dunlap being the starting LT, but it’s no long term plan, just for one season while we develop Harris/draft a LT high in 2014/make a trade.

No quick fixes for the Oline, more than 1 seasons worth of work to be needed.

    • Cgoodness13

He’s better than Harris, and he wasnt that well coached in Philly

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

warmack or cooper should be on the left side of the line

  • Cgoodness13

I was hoping to give him another shot :/

  • Cgoodness13

So I herd we save money doing this, and I herd we loose money, wtf?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

we save $500K in cap space… but we pay that fool $6M for sitting on his tail

      • Cgoodness13

Oh alright. We can get a backup DE for that I guess

      • DougM

Ernie, the other part was that he was guaranteed more money if he was on the 2013 opening day roster, correct?

        • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

No, start of the new season. The new season already is upon us at the beginning of March 2013. Can’t recall the exact date.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

don’t think there was a roster bonus, but if he was on the 2013 roster, he would likely cost us cap money for next season as well.

        • arnie

if i understand this correctly, if he made the week 1 roster, he’d get a cash bonus of $4.5 Mil and would be on the books for 2014. However, he doesn’t get paid $6 mil to go away. That money is dead money, AKA a cap hit. he has a base salary, and bonuses like reporting to OTA’s, reporting to Training Camp, meeting his Strength and condition coaches, weight training, making the roster, blah, blah. Those can be written into contracts as “guarantees”. Keep this in mind, in the NFL no contract is guaranteed.

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

            Amen.

      • RussinSactown

We also open up a roster spot for someone who WILL contribute.

        • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

We still have to find the money to pay someone who will contribute. Yeah, we save $500k, IF that spot is never filled. Before we sign anybody to take Gaither’s place, we get a hit of $6 mill this year for Gaither–then start adding in what we would pay a new guy.

Get somebody half way decent maybe through the draft or off the street (but have to stay under $500,000 at least for one year.).

          • arnie

Not so Stefanie. This was a “cap hit”, the Chargers have money to pay players. It’s just the total team salary cannot exceed the cap for a team. Example, base salaries are counted against the cap, a “signing bonus” is not.

      • Guest

If someone picks him up, do the Chargers need to pay him anything then? Ofc its counts against the cap but the money..

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i am pretty sure we own him that money

      • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

But his $6Million we pay out is a $6 Mill cap hit.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

a $6 million signing bonus.. he still gets that money. it was guaranteed money for him

  • DougM

Good riddance, bum. I’m sure you don’t care that you stole money from the Chargers, but you did.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I guess they couldn’t light that fire under his fat ass like some of us were hoping, What a turd ball. This guy literally stole money from the Bolts, At least next year we wont have to deal with him on the books, great move by TT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

It didn’t have much to do with lighting fires. Their hand was forced. The gamble was too rich for new management’s blood. He would continue to accrue disgusting amounts of money, as things went on, thanks to AJ’s ridiculous contract. It wasn’t realistic to fight four wars, even if they wanted to keep Gaither. The first would be a war to see if Gaither could potentially play like 2011… Which they may have fought. But, then the fans would have started a war over it. Then, the war against AJ’s retarded multiplying contract, if he didn’t produce. And, finally the players would riot if he stayed. I hope the players are right this time. Because they were dead fucking wrong about keeping Norv around… Which is worse in my opinion. I stopped caring about the “locker room’s feelings” that day… Lol. Helping AJ keep Norv around when we were sick to death of it was the biggest EFF YOU the players could have handed to the fans, IMO. Those particular players are as much to blame as Gaither, AJ, Spanos, and Norv. I almost can’t wait until this roster its almost totally purged, to tell you the truth. Glad the Gaither mess is over now, but the damage is already done. Here’s to the rebuild!!! Long tome coming.

      • arnie

You are so on point. Well said.

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Thank you. I thought I might be getting some evil looks for this statement.

  • 619chargers4life

never wish for a person to get canned, but thank you football Gods lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Think of it like this. We are in the hole already for $ 6 mill for this position and the position presently is vacant.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      truth

  • arnie

    YEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!
A message was sent today. TT isn’t going to reward laziness. Remember TT wanted have a sit down, before he made a decision. Gaither decided to make his impression by talking to his new boss over the phone. Strange, it’s the same way he was told he doesn’t have a job.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Laughing… True dat. I think he should have done it earlier, if he was gonna do it.

      • arnie

That’s what most of us would have wated, but if TT had done that, and not gotten the tackles from FA, he wouldv’e screwed himself. The best part about what he did, he didn’t show his hand. He let people think he was bringing players in for depth, that only works If Gaither is still here. That puts him a position of strength when looking for FA. As long as gaither appeared to be under contract, he gave the look of not being a desperate GM, that way players couldn’t strong arm him.
Now that the contracts are signed, it’s to late for the FA to get more money, and the level of competing for that open spot, just got more competive. Especially if TT get’s a LT in the daft.

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

          Spot on, Arnie!
I totally understand why he did what he did. I should have said “wish he would have done it”. I was just coming from a selfish place, where it would have been nice to NOT see the fans going on a Gaither witch-hunt for TT & MM.. or each other… for the last few weeks. It’s like people think these guys are stupid??? Right now, everyone is back on the “Great job TT” bandwagon. However, I’m certain they will pick their pitchforks back up the minute he does something else they don’t like, without understanding how the game is played. Personally, I think he has played his cards in genius fashion from the get-go… but, what do I know ; )

          • arnie

Thanks Pete. Hey man, we’re all just fans, sharing our thoughts about our favorite team. The fact that we a Pickford reaction to what goes on in Charger Park, shows how passionate we are about our Bolts.
And thanks for having my back, with evil stares…. :0 LOL.

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

            You got it!

  • JoseSD

Sucks taking that cap hit, at least we won’t have to rely on him last year and completely fall apart when he gets an ingrown toenail or scrapes his knee. I guess this makes oline priority #1 in the draft if they take Warmack or Cooper they’ll need to play the left side to help whoever starts at LT

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

picking up a good left guard will definitely help the left tackle out more too… it might have to be dunlap for this season
