If the Season Started Today: Chargers Offense

Sometimes, I just like to write out the roster to see what it looks like. The whole roster isn’t put together yet, so let’s just look at who we have on the starting roster right now. Let’s start with the offense and we will hit up the defense in another post:

QB – Philip Rivers – this is a big year for Philip. We need to get him some time to wind up and chuck that football out to his receivers.

RB – Ryan Mathews – Will the China Doll finally have the year that we have been waiting for since he was drafted?

WR – Danario Alexander – still need to finalize a deal with the restricted free agent

WR – Malcom Floyd – M80 has been a solid target for Philip to rely o.

WR – Vincent Brown – 2 seasons and he has been bothered by injuries on both of them. Can he finally get out of training camp healthy and make an impact on offense.

TE – Antonio Gates – Does he have anything left? Some say his production slacked because the whole offense sucked. We need him to bring back that All-Pro form.

LT – Jared Gaither – right now he still is on the roster, so he would be the starter. Untold we release him, he is our starter.

LG – Johnnie Troutman – Troutman was drafted last season and had to sit the whole year with an injury. Now he is back and will get a chance to compete for a starting role. Right now, I think he had a decent chance to win a starting job?

C – Nick Hardwick – Hardwick is the only one on the line that is safe on the offensive line. There could be so many more changes made.

RG – Chad Rinehart – did well backing up Andy Levitre last season and will be familiar with the blocking schemes. He has to hold the edge for the starting job.

RT – Jeromey Clary – I almost put King Dunlap here, but I just don’t know. And that is scary as heck.

The draft could bring us two more starters on that offensive line. If Lane Johnson is available at 11, then we will likely cut Gaither and slide Johnson in over on the left side. If Johnson is unavailable, we could take Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper to play at left guard. Then we could go after Terron Armstrong in the second round. Eric Winston’s name still has been floating around also.

The Danario Alexander situation needs to be resolved. Danny Woodhead should find plenty of opportunities to contribute on offense also.

If the line can block…

So if were lucky we go eight and eight ?

      16-0 keep the faith

I think Dunlap will beat out Clary. We don’t keep Alexander I say Willie is the next WR

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Dunlap was nearly run out of Philly. Pray he plays better here.

    • Sergio Quintero

Out of what I have read, Dunlap is a much better pass blocker than Clary, and a rather below average run blocker, you can hind those kind of players in a zone scheme if they are disciplined in their assignments. So if the chargers are fully committed to the ZBC, I can clearly see Dunlap as a better fit than Clary.

      • blu3ny3llow

Well technically Clary might be a better fit for ZB …..Zone generally requires shorter and lighter linemen n they don’t need to be super athletic

        • Sergio Quintero

I know Philly ran a zone system, so he will at least have more experience than Clary

  • Peallster

    Yes

  • Sergio Quintero

I expect a LT to be taken between round 1-2, and a OG to be taken between round 1-4. From the draft I also expect a backup RB, speed WR, and late in the draft maybe a FB, so they can cut Le’Ron McClain.

  • Cgoodness13

I’m happy with Gaither at LT right now

    • Cgoodness13

      Here’s something interesting about Gaither….http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jared_Gaither#section_4

      • arnie

That is why so many NFL teams are willing to take chance on him. You see the history of his ability, and his talent on either side of the ball.
I wonder if his injury history, can be related to so many college athletes declaring so early? I only hear the talk of players bodies still developing. So being 6′-9″ may not help, competing against men, that have years of conditioning, to take a pounding the NFL can put on it?

        • Cgoodness13

I feel like he may be taking the blame for things that are not really his fault, though I can see how he could be faking injuries. Kinda 50/50 on it right now. I’ll make my decision on him after this upcoming season

          • arnie

Exactly. The ball is gaithers court.

  • Cgoodness13

I’m guessing 9-7 10-6 ish. Norv is gone, o line already better, d almost as good, and we still have the draft coming up

    • http://www.facebook.com/will.davis.7355 Will Davis

O line better?? All they did was sign rinehart to replace Vasquez. That’s a downgrade and nobody else is good enough to start. And defense almost as good?? That’s why jammer, Cason, spikes, barnes, Garay, Franklin, and possibly Phillips and Martin are gone and the only replacement signed is cox. You’re living in a fantasy world. And if u think norv was the problem u clearly know nothing about this team.

      • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

That guy has to be pulling our chain. For him to say he is happy with Gaither is almost preposterous… as the guy rarely even played.

        • Cgoodness13

I’m happy with Gaither right now, don’t twist my words, if we do draft Johnson, then Move Gaither to RT or the bench

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

But how could you be happy with him at any time seeing he is costing the team a lot of money, causing problems with other personnel, rarely doing his job and getting huge sums of guaranteed money? Please explain.

And please post your source as to Dunlap being ranked higher than Clary. He was horrible in Philly. There is tape all over the place on this guy. I hope he improves here, but he is not stellar, by any means.

          • Cgoodness13

When he has something to play for, he’s pro bowl caliber, and if McCoy, whisenhut, the o line coach, an the strength an conditioning coah can get him to play, rivers should be able to duel with manning and Mathews should be a pro bowler. Just like what McCoy said, I’m giving everyone a clean slate.

          • Cgoodness13

            Talking about Gaither of course

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Pretty expensive clean slate. But guess we are stuck.

      • Cgoodness13

        1) troutman was suppose to be a 1st-2nd round pick last year before he was hurt
        2) Rinehart is ranked higher than Vasquez
        3) Dunlap is ranked hire than clary
        4) we released people who were going to loose their starting jobs anyways, spikes was going to loose it, Cason was going to loose it, jammer was going to loose it, etc
        5) why are you a chargers fan? You speak nothing but negative things about the team, I’ve heard raiders fans speak better about our team
        6) every one in the league knew norv was a terrible HC, Rex Ryan has said that in every interview he’s eer had before a jets vs chargers game.
        7) our new o line coach and conditioning coach might be able to make Gaither motivated (might)
        8) McCoy will not be both a HC and OC, he will just be HC and let wisenhut (or however you spell his name) be the OC
        9) our team is already improved, and we still have the draft to go to find a couple more starters and depth.

        • Sergio Quintero

Find me one scouting report that Troutmann as a 1-2 rounder, I can’t, PFW had him as an undrafted free agent, walterfootball 6-7 rounder, espn scouts inc 7-undrafted. Seems like another overvalued prospect in the Jonas Mouton vein to me.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i was wondering the same thing… i dont know where that keeps coming from.

      • Cgoodness13

Wait, you wanted Cason and Jammer to be our CB’s? Hahahaha now who’s living in a fantasy land

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

They were rated the worst CB tandem in the league. They both come up on the leagues ten worst CB’s. I could have kissed TT when he let Cason walk.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Hey, where did Eddie Royal go? Is he still even on the Chargers? I have been looking at the overthecap.com website for Charger contract info and it has Eddie Royal on a multi-year deal still on the team.

I get Eddie Royal and Jackie Battle mixed up. Jackie Battle had the one year deal and is a UFA this year. Plus Battle had no guaranteed money. It was Royal with the guaranteed money.

    Where is Eddie Royal?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

He’s still around. Just disappearing as usual

      • arnie

Can we make the money we’re paying him disappear as well?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          if only we could

          • arnie

Lol I don’t see why not. I didn’t think his money is guaranteed?

  • arnie

    Good list Ernie,
A few things. Gates is solid, if they use him where he’s the best. The red zone.
Look for VB to challenge for the #1 WR spot.
Think Ornberger, Troutman at LG. Harris an Dunlap at RT.
Also the china doll. Do we really think he can out perform Woodhead?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I wonder the same thing on Woodhead. He could potentially steal the job for himself and we become a pass happy offense. He can run the ball too, but his best asset is when he is in space. Should be interesting to watch.
I don’t know if we even re-sign Tyronne Greene. I would probably rather re-sign Rex Hadnot.

      • arnie

With a zone blocking scheme, Woodhead will get all the space he needs. The blocking gives him options on which gap to hit. As for Greene, the longer he goes into FA, easier it will to bring him back. Unless Telesco believes the players they signed are an upgrade. Hadnot is still an option.
