If the Season Started Today: Chargers Defense

Just wrote out the Chargers starting offense if the season started today and there still are a ton of question marks on the offensive line. The center position is locked in, but all other spots are up for grabs… And we wonder why Philip Rivers was having issues the last couple of seasons.

On defense, there are a ton of question marks all over the place too.

Here is how the defense looks right now:

NT – Cam Thomas – Aubrayo Franklin is gone and it’s Cam’s turn to take hold of the position.

DE – Corey Liuget – the youngster is a rising star. Sky is the limit for the kid

DE – Kendall Reyes – Kendall will benefit from a whole offseason and knows he is going into the season as the starter

OLB – Jarret Johnson – Double J is going to be the old man on the defense with all the changes in the offseason

ILB – Donald Butler – can he stay healthy for a whole season? We need him to be the anchor on the defense

ILB – Bront Bird – right now, Bird is the best option to start. Can Jonas Mouton actually contribute?

OLB – Melvin Ingram – time for the youngster to get some playing time and make an impact. He needs to make an impact

CB – Derek Cox – another guy that needs to be healthy. He will get the assignment against the opposing team’s best receiver.

CB – Shareece Wright – the kid has to step up and take that starting job. Marcus Gilchrist will challenge for the starting job and I am sure someone will be drafted to compete

FS – Eric Weddle – our best player on the roster. We need to get him some help

SS – Brandon Taylor – he is coming back from injury and has to fight to take that starting job

All over the roster, there are starting jobs that are up for grabs. Kids need to step up and take some jobs. Some kids will be drafted and compete for starting jobs as well. The defense is young. Kids will need to prove themselves.

Hey, it’s Ernie’s and his group’s blog… If it bothers you that much, then move on! Get off his back.

Stop dictating how someone should write or what someone should write.

  • Brandon Rios

TT needs to resign Corey Lynch.

    • arnie

There is good chance of that happening. However i think he’s letting the FA market cool, so he can sign players on his terms instead of what the market dictates.

  • Rob Base

They need to bring back Corey Lynch and Demorrio Williams. They both stepped up and played well.

I’d like to think that Mouton will do his best to push himself to the limit NOW that he has an opportunity to start/contribute. And he has a great opportunity.

If our defense looked like this on day 1, then I’ll be happy and excited. We have a lot of young promising players who can play.

  • Cgoodness13

We might have to draft a DT in round 2….or a CB

  • Cgoodness13

I still think we should switch to the 4-3, but what eva

  • Joel Garcia

I think if we draft Tryann Mathieu he would be a instant starter and contributor to our secondary.

      In with you on that

This list only proves the sky is not falling. I’ve seen most of these Guys play, or at least seen there potential. The problem was, there wasn’t enough opportunities for them to play with veteran FA in front of them. At some point you have to turn to your bench and say, “it’s to be a starter”, which tells me 1) the players you drafted aren’t that good. 2) you are not developing players, for the future, because you need to win, now, to save your job.
I think Chargers will be looking for depth, and starters for the 2015 season.
