Vaughn Martin Getting Interest From A Few Teams

Apparently, Vaughn Martin is a wanted man. Martin started 12 games for the Chargers last season before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Now the Eagles, Saints, Lions and Patriots all want a piece on that action. I guess his 19 tackles from last season are a real selling point for him.

The San Diego Chargers would love to keep him around for depth up front, but if one of those other teams can offer him more money or more playing time, then he probably will skip out of town like the rest of them. We already lost Antonio Garay and Aubrayo Franklin to the free agency monster, why not another one.

We have to fill out the depth up front at some point. Right now we have Kendall Reyes, Corey Liuget and Cam Thomas and that’s it. No depth behind them. It is going to take a few more players to fill that position.

He’s kinda like Shaun Philips to Melvin Ingram. Keeping a talented rookie off the field. He was the starter last year, don’t think he’d be willing to come back just to back up Kendall Reyes, if another team offers him a starting role he’s probably gone

    • Ernie Padaon

we do need some depth on that defensive line though

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

You guys notice that Shaun gets like 0 love in FA lists or top 100 players in FA? He had 9 freakin sacks (same as Bennett and Avril) but most lists don’t have him top 100? lol Must be something that every writer out there see’s but us??

        • Ernie Padaon

the funnier part is, if Shaun returned, he might only be used on passing downs (isn’t every down a passing down now?). a pass rushing specialist type. i know shaun graded really low on PFF, but thinking there are 100 free agents better than him at this stage seems kinda nuts

          • Pete Spinning

You took the words right out of my mouth. 100 free agents are better? pah-lease!

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

So crazy, some list he is not even mentioned at all that are top 100 or not in the “honarable mentions” under the list. Almost like he doesn’t even exist lol.

So 9.5 Sacks 2 FF’s 3 Fr’s and a defensive TD gets you not mentioned….when guys like: Victor Butler with almost no stats, Isreal Ideoje……really? Daryl Smith…..”I’m sorry who”, Brian Urlacher & James Harrison both rate higer? But no body wants them? Shaun must feel like he is living on Mars or something

          • Ernie Padaon

            that is frickn nuts!

          • Guest

Or, “nuckin futz”, as Dickie Roberts would say…. hopefully you’ve seen that movie, or it may not be funny.. lol.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Shaun to Earth Shaun to Earth……. Look at my stats…. over…. , “I’m sorry you have reached a number that is no longer in use or has been disconnected…….Goodbye………” (Earth)

          • Pete Spinning

If this keeps up, maybe we can sign him back for the vet-min.. hee-hee. (I know… that’s an awful thingt to say.. or is it?)

          • Ernie Padaon

            not awful at all.. haha

          • arnie

Hey, we all know Shaun was at his best when Merriman got all the attention of blocking schemes, everyone else benefited as well. He’s been a solid player, but those types of players are all over the place. Never have I seen Shaun take over a game and dominate. Those nine sacks came on blown blocking assignments or the occasional beating his man one-on-one. Rarely was it necessary to double him. Coaches see things like that on tape.

He’s a thirty – something LB who’s play is slightly above average. If he wants to come back, it will be on Telesco’s terms. Not the FA market.

          • Pete Spinning

Those are just garbage numbers, bro… pffffttt.

  • Rob Base

He’s a gonner another team will pay more sad because Bolts gave him a chance when he was considered an underclassman.

  • 619chargers4life

the D line is looks to be getting thin fast. not good

  • RussinSactown

I remember when we brought him in. He wasn’t the force AJ said he was (Story of the last 5 years). We need depth and we’ll get it. Sounds like we’re going total youth movement. Look for a lot of invites to training camp.

    • davacho

russell- you the man. 100% agree.

  • Stefanie Smith

I read an interesting response from a Titans’ fan when somebody else said they needed to blow it all up and “rebuild”. The Titan’s fan responded that is what they were supposed to be doing for the last three years.. and no they shouldn’t be blowing it all up and starting over again.

What year are we in — in the Chargers’ rebuilding process? Do we start at zero each time a new coach or new management comes in? Did we start any of the “rebuilding” process last year or the year before that?

    • Ernie Padaon

      this would be year zero

      • Stefanie Smith

So the new management is pretty much blowing the whole thing up right now? Sort of sad… because not all these players going out the door are lousy.. We are signing players as good/bad as what we are letting walk out the door.

        • Ernie Padaon

not blowing the thing up… re-loading.. the team was old and likely needed something fresh. new management evaluated players different than the old ones and didnt mind letting some of these guys walk.

          • JoseSD

Exactly Ernie they’re not in a full on rebuild like some people think. I think if they’re able to find suitable if not good starters at least at the tackle and guard spot, a CB maybe he’s already on the roster how good did Wright look last preseason before his injury in week 1 everyone forgets how awesome he was before his setback. A good SS to pair with Weddle and LB to go with Butler. Again some of these may already be on the roster. Young guys that weren’t given a shot to start. With smart acquisition of quality depth players I think a wild card spot is possible. The main thing is protecting Philip and avoiding mistakes that caused so many late game collapses under norv. How many times in the last 2 years did they have chances at the end of the game but we all had that feeling in our gut. We knew they would find a way to fuck it up. Hopefully that left with norv

          • Ernie Padaon

the biggest thing for Tom and crew, we have to hit in the draft. rounds 1-3 need to contribute in a big way. the rest of the guys need to be solid depth.

          • Stefanie Smith

Oh yeah, that feeling in the gut. It got bad last year–could barely watch, knew what was going to happen.

        • JoseSD

Most of them are. All are either old, underachievers, don’t fit in, or just suck. Most people would argue that the only thing being rebuilt is the oline. Pretty much every starting position outside the o line, MLB, SS are set. Now they just need depth at DLine,, lb, and DB someone to compete with Wright/Gilchrist for the other CB spot

    • Sergio Quintero

The front office had two choices, keep most of roster and the rather big mess in the salary cap and try to cut the difference from a 7 win team and make it a 10 win team. Or clean up the cap, and get the same level player or slighty worse player at a much cheaper price, start a lot of young players and stop gap veterans and almost assuredly get worse.

Its no longer a question they took option 2. Can they still win 10-11 games, yes its possibility I wouldn’t gamble on it. Am I mad they chose that route?, sure because I don’t want to drop 2k for a pair of tickets on a 5-6 win club.

So at end, I probably wont renew my tickets, I’ll watch their road games on TV, and hope for the best.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I wouldn’t be surprised if TT & MM do to our NT position as to what they did with our Guards. Replace them with large bodies that they are familar with and know can play. Watch us sign a NT from the Bills/AZ or Den. Don’t want to have to draft every single position or have to rely on drafting a NT in the 5th round hoping he can start right away.

    • Ernie Padaon

i think we definitely will do that… and i am good with it

      • James P Derrick

So long as the team gets better, faster, and more ferocious….

  • surge619

Whatever you guys do Just get it done make us finally be proud of our team once again ……GO CHARGER.

  • C.Steele

He totally wasn’t brought in as a “force”. He was brought in as a developmental player out of Canada. And, that’s exactly what has happened. He’s developed in to a solid contributor, plus he’s still young, and fits into our “youth movement. So, I for one was hoping out of all our free agents this was the guy we made an effort to bring back. He’s a producer, young, good citizen and still has plenty of upside; evidence by the other teams after him…

    • Stefanie Smith

yeah, I agree. Letting these guys walk just because, seems odd to me.

  • arnie

Okay Ernie, I’ve had time to mull this over and here are my thoughts on Martin. As much as I like what Telesco is doing, this is where draw the line.
If you want to keep someone, then do it.
Nothing says “we want you” than a contract with money attached to it. Quite simply, my definition of wanting somone, is doing everything possible to make it work. Key part here being “making it work”. If not, then your just leaving the door open, if a player will take less money.
Vaughn Martin has played well enough, to earn at least an offer from the Chargers.

    • Stefanie Smith

You said it perfectly. “if you want to keep someone, then DO IT!” Feel like sending a shirt with that on it to TT.
