Chargers Sign RB Danny Woodhead to 2-Year Deal

Stew Milne-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers have signed a backup runningback today by picking up New England Patriots RB Danny Woodhead. We picked him up for a couple of seasons to help carry the load.

I really like this signing. Woodhead will be used as a 3rd down back and will be another option for Philip Rivers to use in the passing game. Woodhead will also get plenty of carries if Ryan Mathews goes down with his normal injury issues. I am sure that the Chargers will also look to add a rookie in the draft to the roster as well.

Woodhead is a mini sized runningback that runs hard. 5-foot-8, but will fight for first downs and can catch passes out of the backfield.

That is what this offseason is all about! Get Philip weapons! Woodhead is another weapon we have that can run the football and can also be lined up in the slot. A versatile option for Mike McCoy on offense.

I am stoked. Tom Telesco keeps making smart moves to add talent on the roster.

We still need offensive linemen, a middle linebacker, a strong safety and a nose tackle, but we are making steps in the right direction. Can Eric Winston be the next signing please?

Last season, Woodhead ran for 301 yards and 4 touchdowns and also had 446 receiving yards with 3 receiving touchdowns. How many touchdowns did Ryan have again? Mini goal line back?

i would keep my eye on tom zbikowski who was just released by the colts… .i liked him a while back

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Whats his deal? I know 0 about this Zibs

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

he was stuck behind ed reed in baltimore than tried to go to Indy to be a starter, but i guess it didnt work out the way he liked. dude can hit

      • tubbs45

much more realistic, pollard is gonna cost a bunch Zibby 2-3 mill

        • shayaaa

Pollard’s base salary for next year with the Ravens would have been $2M iirc..

    • Sergio Quintero

Has there been talk of him visiting the chargers, haven’t heard any interest from the chargers.

Ernie: I know they do these signings for the fans also. But it makes me feel better they are doing something. At least they are trying. Weapons for Rivers — good. And depth at positions.

Not sure how I feel about a Brady bunch system guy? In other news the Colts released Tom Zbikowski now that they signed Landry. I wouldn’t be against Zibs as our SS. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/15/colts-release-tom-zbikowski/

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i just thought about the same thing!!!! i like him

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I have this theory that somehow Belichek’s crazy mind and Tom Brady combined makes little tiny white guys play like their freakin Rudy. But put them on another team with a less accurate passer and they will blow. Pats signed amedola that shows this theory might also entail you can replace any of these little white guys with any other little white guys, watch them draft a little white running back in the draft that no one has heard of or as a undrafted rookie and he slots him right in Woodheads spot like they never missed a beat.

I am open to being a Woodhead fan but it’s going to take me a few mins, not a Patriot fan at all either.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i like this dude… but i know that same fear.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Anybody else when not a Woodhead fan call him Danny Woodcock? lol Don’t tell me I’m alone here

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

we need to make woodcock t-shirts!!

          • tubbs45

HAAHAHA you know its coming… #yougotWoodCocked

    • RussinSactown

A lot of people don’t do the same outside of Foxboro. I don’t expect Brady’s Danny Woodhead. I expect a hungry running back who wants to make things happen. Maybe now a safety and big left tackle signing and we can comfortably get ready for draft.

    • arnie

the Chargers sign a RB that has scored more touchdowns than mathews, with less touches. has stayed healthier than mathews over a longer period of time. has taken less hits, and is eager to prove he can be a RB in this league. Also Telesco didn’t break the bank to get him.
How could you not be a fan of this guy?

  • Sergio Quintero

I said signing a 3rd down back was the way to go, no get a backup RB in the draft and the backs are set

  • Supercharger77

In Telesco I trust. Now bring in pollard!

  • 619chargers4life

we are moving right along in the right direction glad to see Tommy Boy making the oh so wise moves. not the back i would have went after but im still pleased with the signing

  • Rob Base

Very nice compliment to our Bolts love this signing. Keep it up Telesco!

Wondering if the Broncos would actually release Dumervil.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I would love to get Dumervil for the right price!!! Get some information on the enemy, and stick it to Denver at the same time. And, he’s a pretty decent player.

      • tubbs45

        Replace Brady for Peyton….hehehehehe

        • tubbs45

He’ll be awfully cranky playing Denver if they dont give him a contract. maybe he could shove vasquez up peyton arse!!!

      • JoseSD

Dumervil was set to make 12 mil this year and is not backing down, doubt they could afford him if he does get released

        • tubbs45

Dumervil just signed with Denver for $8 mill

          • JoseSD

Yeah saw that, but technically not signed he agreed to a reduction of his contract

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Dumervil just got released. His agent did not fax over the agreement by the deadline. They are posting it on NFL.com. Broncos said they cut him because if it was after the deadline they would have to pay him extra money.

Now they have salary cap issues if they re-sign him at a lower price.

          • JoseSD

That’s hilarious. Who the hell still uses a fax machine, its outdated as a beeper or texting with a two way. I still think he would be too expensive to sign here anyways. He was willing to go down to 8 mil to stay in Denver but I doubt he’ll go that low for another team

          • shayaaa

A lot of people/companies still use fax… It’s not all the same as it was back in the day… They have electronic faxes now (almost the same as an email; just perceived as more secure for obvious reasons). You can’t exactly text back a signed contract agreement..

    • Preston Niedert

If Dumervil is released and he want he could sign with the chargers to stick it to the broncos.

      • tubbs45

        Mike Klis‏@MikeKlis
Hold on, contract not filed in time. Elvis Dumervil has been officially released

        • Preston Niedert

The chargers should jump on him would be a great way to make up losing vasquez to the broncos you take our player we take yours

          • tubbs45

oh man, I wonder where we are Cap-wise… Anybody know?

          • Preston Niedert

Last I heard 19millon but with woodhead deal or cox I’m not sure

          • tubbs45

here is one site pre-FA, cant verify accuracy: http://www.overthecap.com/nfl-cap-space.php?Year=2013

          • Preston Niedert

Soundes about right the Derek cox signing lowered the cap space and it might be lower then that with the woodhead signing.

        • tubbs45

That Agent is getting fired and SUED….

      • tubbs45

        Bet ya Denver signs Harrison…

  • tubbs45

    Yeah #yougotwizzedonbyLBM

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      hahahahahahhahahahaha!!!! it just got better!!!!!!!

  • tiiiiiiiiiiit11

Yaaaay!!! The Patriot’s 3rd best running back -___-
Anything is an upgrade from Matthews, I guess

  • Preston Niedert

Whats the word on any more free agents signing.

  • http://twitter.com/PowderBlue619 Saul Lopez

Yes!!! I am super stoked about this signing!!

When he’s on the field the D will think twice about blitzing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I don’t know why… and I know I’m kinda crazy… but, Woodhead looks like Michael Myers from Halloween to me in that picture = /

  • Guest

And we compliment him with a 1yr deal. Ronnie Brown…

  • tubbs45

And then we follow up with Ronnie Brown???? 1 yr deal…. ok…

  • kris

looks like we signed Ronnie brown to another year.

  • veazy

Replace the Uniforms with Chargers uniforms, and replace Lloyd With Meachem/Royal. Doesn’t it suck for him how the guy who did nothing all season gets a touchdown after he made a nice play?

  • Brian Smith

I think we are forgetting we are going to have a whole new offensive scheme this year. Norv is gone and i really believe that the new Offensive brain trust will put a plan in place to fit our offensive players skill set, its gonna be a good year…

  • arnie

Finally, somebody in Chargers park is looking at the right things, when it comes to signing a veteran RB. Either you’re a football player. or you’re not> You can play in this league. or you can’t. Woodhead is both, and he is a Charger at a bargain. Don’t let the two year deal fool you. Three more years could be added on, if Mathews is not here in 2014.
