A Few Runningbacks The Chargers Could Look Toward In Free Agency

The San Diego Chargers are looking to find a few guys in the backfield that can carry the load with Ryan Mathews. Mathews has been a China Doll, often injured and has had a case of the dropsies. He also hasn’t been great at blocking for his quarterback, but he will get another chance to try and prove himself. This time, there should be more competition for the position.

The Chargers claimed Fozzie Whittaker from the Arizona Cardinals to compete for a roster spot, but Fozzy is not a huge threat to take over some snaps in the backfield. Wocka Wocka.

There are some good young backs that the Chargers should be able to get on some cheap contracts. These guys aren’t going to challenge for starting duties, but they fit that prototypical 3rd down back. They can catch balls out of the backfield and can make people miss.

Here are some backs that would look alright in a blue and gold jersey:

Leon Washington
I still remember the game where he beat us single handedly with his returns on special teams. He used to beat us up while he was with the Jets as well. He was recently given his walking papers and could be a solid backup to Ryan Mathews.

Justin Forsett
Here is another scat back that could do well with getting more snaps. Forsett ran well while with the Seattle Seahawks, but his playing time was eventually taken away when Marshawn Lynch was brought to Seattle.

Larod Stephens-Howling
Ken Whisenhunt knows all about the “hyphen”. Stephens-Howling is a Poor man’s Darren Sproles. He has the ability to break off the big play, but will put his head down to try and gain the tough yards.

Danny Woodhead
Not sure what he will make on the open market, but the little guy runs tough. Just another hard nosed New England Patriots player. He could be scary to pick up, because he benefits a lot from being on the Patriots offense.

Mike Goodson
Goodson can break off some big chunks of yards. He proved it with the Panthers and with the Raiders. He could be a nice guy to have on the roster as a backup to Ryan.

Any of these guys interest you?

Woodhead reminds me of Jacob Hester, so not to sure about that, but i would be stoked if Leon Washington came to town .

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

really? i dont see the comparison on those two

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m not a fan of minature white guys in the NFL but to each their own.

    • boltingindiego

woodhead isn’t a fb/rb tweener. hes a rb who can catch could replace brown as our 3rd down back.

      • 619chargers4life

either was hester when he was in college. they just look the same to me

        • boltingindiego

how woodhead has 4.33 speed while hester has 4.63 speed there completely different backs. hester was power back who didn’t have the speed to play rb so they put him in fb. Woodhead has speed and hands so he can play rb and be a 3rd down back.

          • 619chargers4life

im not gonna disagree with that at all. i just think there running styles very similar thats all .

          • Brandon Rios

You’re comparing apples and oranges man. They’re not similar at all.

  • Rob Base

Washington is visiting Patriots today doubt he will leave without a contract plus he’s already 30. Forsett I think is better option but I think he’s in Jacksonville so doubt it.

  • Sergio Quintero

I would seriously look at both of the 3rd down backs, Stephens-Howling & Woodhead, for the actual backup RB/Spot starter I think you can easily find that in the 3-5 round range.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Ya I think were going draft for RM’s running partner.

      • Sergio Quintero

I like Johnathan Franklin, Joseph Randle & Stepfan Taylor for that range

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Sounds good, I’m looking at it this way. The guy behind RM needs to be starter worthy in case RM breaks his foot or ankle and is out at any point, the next guy needs to be able and step up. We did not have that last year at all. Watching those Battle up the middle for 0 plays were hard to watch.

        • NativeSanDiegan

I really like Taylor; also Franklin. TT said he wants 3 or 4 capable rb. Sign a couple who are quick to the hole and hard runners, draft 1 or 2, & sign undrafted FA’s

    What about Ahmad Bradshaw?

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Yeah, I have been reading about him. Who was getting around in a wheel chair at the SB in New Orleans? Not sure if it wasn’t Bradshaw. I think he just got a major operation. Maybe I am wrong.

      What about Jacobs?

    • Sergio Quintero

Don’t believe in signing true backups at RB, at most 3rd down backs, better to take 3-5 round RB, younger & cheaper. I would prefer Levion Bell, J.Franklin, more than Ahmad Bradshaw as a declining player.

  • blu3ny3llow

I think they are going to look for an RB in the draft….hopefully Le’veon Bell…..if they do bring in a FA RB it’ll be more of a camp body-wait n see what he does type

  • arnie

Of that list Ernie i can only see the Chargers looking at Gooding and Howling. both are still young, the others are either 27-30 years of age. RB have short careers….

besides they still have a few youngsters to sort though on the roster.

  • Joey Nicks

    Is it 2014 yet?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      i know right!!!!

  • Lee

i would actually like to see felix jones. he wont be too expensive and has been a backup before.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

im scared of his injuries tho

      • Lee

        true

    • tubbs45

he does have some slippery hands at times like RM

  • Lee

leon washington just went to the patriots

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      welp!

      • arnie

good for him. it’s like being on vacation, when you’re an RB for new england.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

    Today is sooooooo slooooooow!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

good for me though…. i was in meetings all day

  • Cgoodness13

    He’s actually a good blocker

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      On that play

      • arnie

more like a wrestling move. was that take down body slam?

        • NativeSanDiegan

          Couldn’t that have been holding?

          • arnie

i think there is a rule, it’s only holding if the player is on his feet, and conscious.

          • tubbs45

HAHAHAHA, no rule against playing ‘Sack-O-Potatoes’ body slam

  • Cgoodness13

Stop being over dramatic, take a chill pill lol he’s going to be a good RB. You can’t say it wasn’t rivers fault because It was the blocking and get mad at Mathews for having bad blockers

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Overdramatic? Never said he wasn’t good. He can’t take the beating of the NFL.

  • Sergio Quintero

Chargers just signed Danny Woodhead to a 2 year deal, so there is that, and here comes the new 3rd down back, goodbye Ronnie Brown??

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      definitely goodbye to ronnie
