San Diego Chargers Sign More Help Up Front: OG Chad Rinehart

The San Diego Chargers added another member to the offensive line today through free agency with the signing of former Buffalo Bills OG Chad Rinehart, per Michael Gehlken. He arrived in San Diego last night and it will be official after taking a physical.

Rinehart was with the Bills last season and spent time with current Chargers/former Bills OL coach Joe D’Alessandris and now should get an opportunity to start with the Chargers. Rinehart was the backup to Andy Levitre last season and could have been the starter for them this coming season with Levitre gone, but we brought him over to the left coast.

Rinehart was a 3rd round pick in 2008 by the Washington Redskins and has already spent time with 2 different teams. This will be his 3rd team.

In 2010, he was arrested for public intoxication in Iowa after he pulled on a locked door at some pizza joint, triggering an alarm. He refused to take a breath test and was taken in after that. Let’s take the guy out to Hoboken out in PB, to get some pizza and brew!

6-foot-5, 321 yards and knows D’Alessandris’ system. He is entering his 7th season and has 21 starts under his belt. He is recovered from a hairline leg fracture that he suffered last season.

It is a smart signing by Tom Telesco. It adds depth up front with a player that knows the system and a possible starter. Just keep grabbing these players that are under the radar and also fit in our budget.

Was talked about, not a flashy signing, but could really outproduce his contract, will help in implementing the scheme too, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a starter.

  • Rob Base

Nice signing way to go Telesco!

  • tubbs45

good backup with lots of potential.

  • Supercharger77

Ernie people need to realize this is the meaning of free agency. Getting the best bang for ya buck. Philly’s so called dream team should be the prime example. Although, Bernard Pollard would be a nice edition.

    • Ernie Padaon

would love me some Pollard… but we would grab someone less flashy… yea, this is how you build through the draft

    • Stefanie Smith

Yeah, but we don’t have to go to the other extreme. I don’t think any of us were expecting to run out and get Mike Wallace. But I hardly think resigning Vasquez was over the top.

And no need to go dumpster diving and expecting to find the diamond at the bottom of the can , because AJ did that and we all know how well that worked.

      • JoseSD

Vasquez didn’t want to be here, he was insulted by the teams offer last season. He did the same thing Vincent Jackson did last year, say how much he likes San Diego and howmuch he’s committed to work on a deal but then left town as soon as free agency started

        • DougM

Exactly, Jose. Vasquez was gone as soon as he mentioned testing the waters. There was no chance.

      • krazy8

I feel you Stefanie,I thought after missing the playoffs for the last 3 seasons they would want to try and “WIN” this season.Especially when nobody knows how long PR will be our QB for.Reload!! don’t Rebuild..It’s all about Now..not two/three years from now…smdh! They better get some STUDS in the draft.

  • tbell11

Will he play LG or RG?

    • Ernie Padaon

he can play either/or… we have openings at both right now

      • tbell11

Now should we sign another Tackle and take Cooper at 11 or sign another Guard and take Johnson

        • Ernie Padaon

i would rather have Chance… and would sign a tackle

          • Pete Spinning

          • tbell11

But does Warmack fit our scheme better than Cooper?

          • Ernie Padaon

i think so… i think warmack is the better player and can fit either scheme

    • Ernie Padaon

BUT… would rather him play right and get a stud on the left side

    • Preston Niedert

Depends on what coach moccoy and the oline coach think is best for them.

    • tubbs45

he can play either. Harris or Toutman could bookshelf the inside on either side.

  • Preston Niedert

Sign Eric Winston and today will be 5 times better then Yesterday.

    • Ernie Padaon

  • Ryan Elliott

Perhaps you should find a better picture? not exactly selling the excitement there

    • Ernie Padaon

haha.. but i liked that one the best from my options

      • Stefanie Smith

        You’re all right, Ernie.!

        • Ernie Padaon

for some reason… i like that they need a big time vehicle to carry these dudes.

          • 619chargers4life

the tires in the back look like there about to pop lol

          • Ernie Padaon

            Haha.. Right

          • tubbs45

            Wheelie action!

    • davacho

    • Stefanie Smith

      Good one!

  • Uri Ortega

Ernie I got a question for you if jarvis jones is there at 11 would you take him

    • Ernie Padaon

      short answer… yes

i am all about picking the best player that is available. get him and get him ready to start outside with melvin… good with me

  • Cgoodness13

If we can get max Starks then we have a chance at playoffs.

    • GiLLy

Well, another of the flawed big spenders. Broncos in serious talks with Wes Welker. While we are looking for our bargains..Denver is signing Vasquez and working on getting Welker signed. Somehow I don’t see that their approach is flawed.

    • JoseSD

They’re going all in cause they know they have 1-2 years tops with Manning. The Broncos chance for a championship is now. The Chargers have a lot of rebuilding to do. This spending spree is gonna hurt the Broncos 2 years from now they’re gonna have to start over with a new QB and they’ll be back at the bottom

      • Krazy8

You want to win now don’t you? or should we wait to see if PR is still around in 1-2-3 years maybe? I know the last 3 seasons sucked for the the time for me, is Now Jose.Just sayin’

        • JoseSD

No shit I want them to win, but the reality is that Telesco has to get rid of AJs mistakes first. It looks like it will be second place in the AFC West again and if they’re lucky maybe a Wild Card berth

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

    Ya baby…..Andy levitre’s backup score

  • 619chargers4life

keep doing ur thing Telesco.i was a little disappointed yesterday. but like u said in ur article last night. Tom said he was going to add depth through free agency and build through the draft. i am no longer going to judge what he is doing until after the draft so i can see the bigger picture. lets get itTom Tom . Go chargers.

    • Ernie Padaon

Haha… I probably will judge still cuz I am an over emotional fan. :)

  • arnie

With this signing i’m starting to see a trend, 300+lb. men in front of PR. also, i’m starting see competition at RT and less chance they retain Clary.

  • Balluga

Solid player. He will be a great asset in San Diego and was vying for the starting job over Levitre. Used on Both sides of the line and he didn’t miss a beat when he filled in for the RG and Levitre when he was bumped out to left tackle. The Bills had one of the best offensive lines if you look at the prduction of Spiller and Jackson. They were just missing a QB. He’ll be more productive than most will imagine…Theres a reason he was grabbed by his former coach within a day of FA.

    • Ernie Padaon

      i am liking the move
