Chargers Eyeing CBs Derek Cox and Jerraud Powers

The San Diego Chargers are in the market for cornerbacks. Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer are going to be on the move and the Chargers aren’t going to  spend big money on players like Sean Smith or Antoine Cason, so the Chargers have there eyes set at a lower rung of the ladder. They have their eyes set on players like Jacksonville Jaguars CB Derek Cox and Indianapolis Colts CB Jerraud Powers, per Michael Gehlken.

Powers definitely would be on Tom Telesco’s list having those Indianapolis Colts roots. Powers was drafted by the Colts in 2009 and has started 42 games for them with 6 career interceptions. He started 8 games for the Colts last season.

Derek Cox is another player that was drafted in 2009 and was taken in the 3rd round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has started 45 games with the Jags and has 12 career interceptions.

The names aren’t going to blow people away, but this looks like the approach that we are going to take this offseason. In some ways, it reminds me of the approach we have always taken.

A young corner with 12 career interceptions doesn’t seem like a familiar route we’ve taken in FA. Couple him with a solid 2nd round pick and there is our starting corners.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Sounds good, He’s 6’1 and has 12 Picks……sign me up

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

That part is different… The fact that we aren’t going to keep put own, the same

  • Rob Base

Who you think would fit better? I say get Cox

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      I wouldn’t mind both

      • Rob Base

I think Cox is on Tampa bays radar though. Telesco might go with Powers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I agree with you, Ernie. Starting to look like more of the same. The “Do Nothing” crew is really going to be something.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Can they at least spend the money on Vasquez? If not, this is not good.
Warren Sapp said that the Bucs used to be the laughing stock of the NFL. No one wanted to play there because they had owners that thought they could still make money going cheap. Everyone had the opinion that Bucs would not pay.

That is the reputation we will get (maybe we are already there)…It’s not good.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m trying to be optimistic here, so they want to go young and not waste money on high price tags. Teleco has a way of doing things and lets see what he does……then we can all yell and scream after tomorrow lol

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I’m optimistic one day and hate the world other days… It’s a vicious cycle

        • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I am with ya, Ernie. Optimistic one day and not liking the route we are going another day. Today is not so good, seeing all the other teams taking chances and putting themselves in position to win games. I hardly think paying Percy Harvin or Anquan Boldin or Vasquez what they are worth is wasting money.

Was paying Peyton Manning a waste of money? Hardly. You pay for what you get. In the draft, you hope to get lucky, We didn’t even want to put a first round tender on Alexander. That would not have been a waste of money.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Right!!! This is what the offseason does to us! At least during the regular season most of us are on the same page

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

No one expects Mike Wallace. They are talking he will get over $10 mill a year from Miami. But Chargers management has to be reasonable and open-minded and cut loose a little.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I should have known I would have an angry day starting with that Gates post… Welp

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

He does get paid a lot of money. I hope he stays healthy and keeps going… but I can see it–Telesco would cut Gates if he could.

          • JoseSD

The Broncos already had a good team and won a Playoff game the year before. They already had Von Miller,Dumervil,,DJ Williams,Derek Wolfe, Champ Bailey, Eric Decker, Damaryus Thomas, Willis McGahee and a good O line with Ryan Clady,, Dan Koppen,, and Zane Beadles. They went 8-8 with Tebow but 13-3 with Manning. I think they would have made the Super Bowl if Rahim Moore didn’t let Jacoby Jones run past him for the big touchdown. Unlike the Broncos finding one missing piece won’t turn the team around they need at least 2 new linemen, backup RB, nose tackle, another MLB, 2 cornerbacks and a strong safety, we won’t get all that in a single offseason especially with ver little cap space

    • JoseSD

The contracts of Jared Gaither, Meachem, Jarret Johnson, heck even Philip Rivers and Weddles contracts prove they’re not cheap big spending in free agency doesn’t always yield wins. The fact that Spanos is willing to pay 10 million remaining in the contracts to fire Norv and AJ show he’s not cheap to get back on the winning track. Its because of the lack of cap room that they can’t go on the free agent shopping spree . And also it was Aj Smith’s ego and bad attitude that kept free agents away not the owner being cheap

      • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Good point. Yeah, they do spend but why so much for players like
        Gaither?

I see what you are saying, so I will retract all this stuff about being dirt cheap. Guess they want to spend smart. And nothing wrong with that. However, signing Vasquez and a few others would not be wasting money.
I don’t know. Feels like you get mixed signals from the Chargers’ management.. But you are right about AJ’s bad attitude, not the owners being cheap. And thanks for bringing it back down to earth. Hard to not get discouraged when teams are making moves all over the place and it seems like we are just sitting there, letting players go as we did before.
There is this perception out there that the owners are cheap. Yeah, it is incorrect. Probably blowback from AJ Smith.

        • JoseSD

Vasquez is the only player I want to get a long term contract, I wouldn’t mind them re-signing Aubrayo Franklin, and getting Jammer back for 1-2 years until Brandon Taylor takes over, and Alexander at a 1 year deal to prove he can stay healthy and produce on the field. The first official day of free agency isn’t until tomorrow so we’ll see if Telesco makes a big move or let’s things play out and choose players that fit the scheme rather than get big name high priced guys

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

In your opinion, how did our team get so bad? What happened? Somebody is responsible.

          • JoseSD

Short Answer… AJ Smith. Bad drafts and stupid personnel decisions. His 2004 and 2005 drafts were so good he got an inflated ego and overvalued his own ability to recognize talent. In his second and third drafts he got Philip Rivers, Shaun Philips, Nate Kaeding, Nick Hardwick, Michael Turner, Shawne Merriman, Marcus McNeil,Vincent Jacksin, Darren Sproles and Luis Castillo. That’s one hell of a haul. But beyond that his drafts have been terrible. He failed to draft suitable o line depth. Besides Vasquez and McNeil and Hardwick he hasn’t drafted any linemen before the 5th round which is why we’ve been stuck with undrafted free agents like Scott Mcurkowski, Brandon Dombrowski, and Mike Harris starting games. His inability to extend our good players like Vincent Jackson or McNeil avoiding those stupid holdouts. Its also why we’re at risk of losing Vasquez now, and Butler should already be lockedd up but hes a free agent next year. Also letting VJax Sproles walk away for nothing in return. People say t

          • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Good answer. Can’t argue with any of it.

          • JoseSD

It cut off my response, I was gonna say that people always blame AJ for losing Brees and Turner for nothing, but that’s the only two things I dont blame AJ for. Drew Brees contract was up, he was never spectacular in SD he tore his labram in the last game and people didn’t think he’d throw again, plus Philip Rivers was waiting to take over. With Michael Turner Tomlinson was still here coming off his second rushing title being the MVP in 2006 they couldn’t afford both but imagine the outrage if the traded Tomlinson and kept Michael Turner. Other than those two things I blame most things on AJ Smith’s bad decisions, and Norv being a bad head coach

  • Cgoodness13

Our pass rush should make these guys look like all pros next season

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Depending on who our other 2 Line backers are maybe or maybe not. Sure wasn’t that great last year.

      • Cgoodness13

Ingram, Johnson, Reyes, Liuget, hell even weddle lol

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

The fact you said Johnson makes me question your pass rushing judgement. Did he get younger and faster this off season?

          • Cgoodness13

Well he has sacked the QB a couple of times

  • Preston Niedert

Derek cox might be a positive signing. But the oline is more importain then a CB at the moment why in Sam hill are the chargers dragging there feet with Vasquez if he was top priority then the chargers would be working on a deal as we speak but there hasnt even been contract offer to him that show he isn’t as importian as the chargers made him out to be.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      Maybe Levitre… Probably not

      • Preston Niedert

I’m hearing the chargers haven’t even made him a offer.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          Heard the same

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

We got several priorities now not just the o-line, I like it though. Roster turnover injected with youth is going to be sweet and we should be a bit faster on d.

      • Preston Niedert

I agree but remember if we do have a youth movement on our hands then prepare for growing pains and possibility a worser record then last year. the same can be said about the oline with the new starters and a injury prone RB. I hope the chargers pick up anothor RB like shonn Greene he might not be a popular signing but he can pick up the slack when Mathews goes down.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I would be cool if this was a mediocre year and we can get a lower draft selection next year. I think we good after two drafts but PR going to be real slow and older by then.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

They are clearing out players and making a lot of cap space, so hopefully they have a good plan in mind.

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Not so fun stat: @StevePalazzolo: CB Derek Cox missed 1 out of every 5.2 tackle attempts, fourth-worst among cornerbacks.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

lol where did you find that useful nugget?

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

That guy on twitter wrote it… That’s a not so great stat!!

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

And for powers: @gmbremer: @BB_Chargers Great in locker room guy, good in zone coverage. Struggled in man last year, and has been injured past 3 seasons.

  • ltwills

I think as charger fans we will have to have patients aj really messed things up but give tom a chance yes vasques was important but if we gave him the money he wanted we would have nothing else I like they way there going getting younger and faster and freeing up cash and its still the first day of free agency as any eagle fan will tell u big names and big money spending dose not equal wins!!!!
