Cleveland Browns Are interested in WR Danario Alexander

The Cleveland Browns are interested in signing WR Danario Alexander, per the Orange and Brown Report. With the Chargers tendering the low restricted free agent offer on Alexander, there would be nothing stopping the Browns from making an offer. They would not have to give up a draft pick to sign him, so why not make an offer?

Norv Turner is the new offensive coordinator in Cleveland and he knows what Alexander can bring to the offense. I am sure he would love to bring him to Cleveland. I could see Cleveland easily sending an offer out to Alexander. It would then be up to the Chargers to match the offer or let him walk away for nothing. Just another hole for us to fill!

That is the risk we made by not offering a higher tender on Alexander. If we want to keep Alexander around, we will have to pay someone else’s price tag.

I knew this would happen. Let say Cleveland does make and offer and alexander does sign with them then what will the chargers do sign anothor WR?

    • Ernie Padaon

They have the right to match the offer…. Or they can let him walk and we have to find another receiver. We saw how hard it is to make new receivers work

      • arnie

in the cenerio of price matching, I see them letting him walk Ernie. after all you’ve posted some pretty awesome WR rookies the Chargers could draft. The upside to that is, you could get two talented young WR, cheaper and less high risk health concerns.

        • Ernie Padaon

There are some guys that are available… Just sad that they have to come to this… Risky for team to offer someone with his résumé of injuries a multi-year deal. If someone is going to do it, the Browns could be that team. There is enough influence in that coaching staff to do it.

          • arnie

i agree. i’m just looking at T&M’s resume and what they’ve done. with less. McCoy made tebow look awesome. An Tom made it look easy building an 11 win team. i’m on the bandwagon that is one of the reasons they were hired.

        • Stefanie Smith

We need some that are ready to play. Danario is ready to play. He already showed that. All these rookies are going to need work and more training. Do you seriously want a whole team of rookies going out there simply because they are cheap? Plus we only get so many picks.

Guess we could find these great WRs off the street. Oh wait, now I sound like AJ

As to less risk of health issues, that does not always happen. Rookies get injured also as we saw the last season.

          • arnie

Louis Vasquez came in as rookie, un-seated a starter and has been the starting right guard ever since. If a rookie is ready to play, they are ready to play. Also Tom took a bunch of rookies, and turned it into a 11-5 season. 15 on offense alone, if I recall correctly, and a few FA in the mix.
If DAX wants to go to norval land, to get paid, I wish him well. The chargers simply don’t have the money to make a bidding war. I’m pretty sure they hired Telesco, to turn this team around, like he did Indy. Not just for next season, but for the next ten years.
Scouting good rookies is a step in the right direction. If Tom can get the next Julio jones, megaton, of Greg Jennings, through the draft, then why settle an toss your eggs in one basket, on a player with a long injury list. That alone should be enough to be okay with him leaving. I for one, have had enough of the injury prone players.

          • Preston Niedert

So the colts were 11-5 big deal. The chargers were 14-2 at one point the times have changed and I hope for once the chargers actually draft some good players and use free agency wisely. Also just because one guy used to know or work with a player dosnt mean he coming to a team the guys work with I’m sick and tired of hearing about that that like saying the jets will win the Super Bowl every year we hear it and have they. Point is the saying it getting old really fast.

          • arnie

It should be a big deal. Telesco’s draft pics, they selected in ONE offseason, made that record in indy. So the Chargers hired him. What record did aj’s picks make last year? 14-2 was over six years ago, and this team has been going in one direction ever since. So they fired aj.

So i don’t see how what aj did, translates to what Telesco is trying to do? I’ve never heard them say, “…they were going to win a championship”. i did hear them say, “…they had a lot of work to do…”, and they “…wanted to build this team to win a championship.” which is the goal for every team.

However, “saying it” is all we have until they actually play. Given the circumstances, Telesco has a better track record, and i giving him the benefit of the doubt, simply because he hasn’t done anything to warrant otherwise.

      • Preston Niedert

I’m know they can match the offer or let him walk. But this could become a bidding war between the chargers and Cleveland so we might as well sign a anothor WR.

        • Ernie Padaon

It just should have never come down to that… Don’t think there would be a war, because the chargers can match the browns offer and it’s done right there. He has to stay with bolts.

          • Preston Niedert

I hope so what’s the news about the oline has anyone caught the chargers eyes yet

          • Ernie Padaon

Haven’t seen any rumors on that yet

          • arnie

they re-signed Mike Windnt, the long snapper.

          • Ernie Padaon

Hahaha… He can play guard right?

          • arnie

            well anything is possible. LOl

  • Nate Lew

The Browns have 40+ in cap space this year they can outbid us in two seconds if they want to. Incredibly stupid early mistake by the “new regime” I might stop calling them that if Danario’s in another jersey next season. Rivers is probably twice as mad.

    • JoseSD

There is no outbidding to be done, it’s up to the chargers they can match what is offered then he has to stay

      • Preston Niedert

Really so let’s say Cleveland offer Alexander a four year contract with so much money guaranteed then What. Odds are he signs with Cleveland when the chargers should have put a second round tender on him instead were the chargers thinking that no team would take a chance on him cause I can count one more team that could also inquire about him the colts and then what this will become a bidding war just you wait.

        • JoseSD

That’s not what I was saying, the original comment was him saying Cleveland would outbid the Chargers. Chargers already set what he’s worth to them, the Browns can offer what they want if the Chargers match he stays. It’s whoever offers him a contract first then they could choose to match or not instead of him getting multiple offers from which they choose which one of the contacts to match

          • Nate

Maybe it isn’t literally a bid but with double that cap room how could they not offer him a contract out of the Chargers reach with double the cap room that we have?

  • Pete Spinning

I’m not going to lie, I liked DA, and will be sad to see him go. But, let’s draft some new receivers please. Younger, faster, and without injury resumes. A new era of Chargers football is on the horizon. Let’s work toward that goal!!!

  • RussinSactown

Well, this can happen. If he follows Norv he knows what he’ll get. Here is an unknown. I would hope he’d stay but if he leaves there are options. Just don’t pick a #4 receiver and pay him some ungodly amount as a possible band aid

  • blu3ny3llow

It would suck if he left but maybe Its time for Mike Willie to do domething…..just saying though

    • Ernie Padaon

I hope Mike Willie gets some opportunities… But still, would love him and Willie to get out there

    • Brandon Rios

Mike Willie needs to get playing time. Why the fuck didn’t they give him a shot last year?

      • Ernie Padaon

        Easy answer… Norv

  • NativeSanDiegan

Just remember, even with the new regime it’s still Spanos calling the shots; & being advised by salary cap accountant Maguire. Spanos doesn’t want to spend $.

    • Jae_H

He doesnt want to spend money!? Are you high? He is always near the cap limit…

  • NativeSanDiegan

Chargers will have mucho holes to fill with only 7 draft choices. Cheap choices 4-7 & Undrafted FA’s will have to fill some of the holes & provide low-quality depth, along with cheap 2nd level FA’s. Every team suffers injuries; quality franchises have good depth & are contenders every year. They also don’t simply release very good players nor fail to re-sign players. They at least trade them. What could Chargers have gotten for Brees (or Rivers), LT, Junior, Rodney Harrison, VJ, Sproles, Merriman, etc. How many more #1 & 2 draft picks could they have had, & they sure could have used Michael Turner the last few years. Just a few thoughts from “The Islands”.

  • Stefanie Smith

Norv said, as he was loading his U-Haul that we did not have a good team and to be patient with the next coach. Now he is trying to snatch our players. Real interesting. Wonder why Chud likes this guy.

  • Cgoodness13

Cleveland only gets people who’s careers are about to end….

  • Nolan

I think they should sign David Nelson from the bills he would be a great fit!!!!!

    • Ernie Padaon

i like him… i dont know if he would be the impact like Danario, but he could come in and compete for a spot
