Now Who Will Be The Chargers Defensive Captain and Emotional Leader?

Takeo Spikes is gone! He was slow and was running on fumes anyway, but he did bring an emotional leadership to the defense that nobody else on the roster has. Shaun Phillips may have been able to fill that role, but he is a free agent and probably won’t be brought back.

Eric Weddle will probably be named the defensive captain, but he doesn’t really strike me as the emotional leader type. Defensive captain, but not so much emotional leader.

The rest of the guys on the defensive side of the ball are young, but one of them will have to step up and take control. Someone will have to be that vocal guy. Melvin Ingram, Corey Luiget, Kendall Reyes?

Of everyone that is on the defensive side of the ball, Donald Butler would be my favorite to step up and be the emotional leader. At least for the upcoming season.

Props to Pels04 for bringing up the topic.

    ingram will step up!

  • blu3ny3llow

I hope reyes, ingram and/or butler step up as leaders we need some “home grown” leaders…not free agents that come over and become leaders……..Tko will be missed though

Butler , Johnson, Ingram, weddle, etc. we are a defensive team now, it shouldn’t be that hard

  • Cgoodness13

Think we are switching to a 4-3….it seems like it would fit our roster the best

      That’s not true

I’m predicting 2 Charger moves tomorrow, making us nice and happy going into the weekend. As far as team leader you would think Weddle would be the man for the job. Bigby cut tomorrow?

Butler or Ingram…..youth movement time…Oh if only this team can play with the tenacity of Defenses like Seattle/SF……hoping with another season under Pagz this D will become more menacing….

The Cards just released Adrian Wilson. I would love to see him reunited with Wisenhunt. Wilson is a bit long in the tooth now but he’s been the consummate pro over the years. Wilson still has gas in the tank and his professional presence would be great in our locker room.

i wouldnt mind having him there… it makes more sense than having bigby filling the role for the time being… it really depends on what they think of Brandon Taylor though

Will Taylor even be ready for the start of this upcoming season?

          its going to be close

I’m not buying into the excuse who will fill his shoes. i’m of the camp. Takeo was a player who’s best years are behind him. and it showed. he was a good leader on the field, his attitude on the locker room was also well documented. but at the end of the day, there are other players that are waiting in the wings, to prove themselves. While i will miss him, it’s time for the “next man up”.

  • miketuck

No, maybe not a emotional leader, but smart and I’ll take that over emotion. In the heat of the game Weddle’s emotion will pick up and especially if he feels someone is lacking in intensity. Weddle deserves captain and should be named. Football intelligance can’t be put aside for emotion.
