Former San Diego Chargers LB Shawne Merriman Is Retiring

Shawne Merriman has announced on his website, shawnemerriman.com, that he is sending in his retirement papers to the NFL.

I remember the days that Shawne was blowing past offensive linemen and destroying quarterbacks. Those were the days! Merriman was a beast and made that San Diego Chargers defense feared across the league.

Then he had that injury and was busted for using performance enhancing drugs.

Oh the memories. He literally ended the careers of runningbacks after the big time hits he put on them. Remember Priest Holmes. Career done.

I also remember that time when Maurice Jones-Drew destroyed Shawne with a  vicious block. That was sad, yet incredible.

Shawne yelling at Antonio Cromartie for not attempting to tackle Shonn Greene! We all were pissed at Cro.

Whether you believe it was the injuries or the drugs that stopped Merriman from being a BOSS, that is your opinion. I will blame it on Tila Tequila!

We all do know that his career was a downfall after those events. I still will not forgive Jeff Fisher for calling the hit on Merriman in that game.

Want to talk bounty? Jeff Fisher!

Thanks Shawne for the memories! Those were some fun defenses to watch.

Thank goodness we drafted Larry English to fill Shawne’s shoes. What would we do without Larry?

What is your favorite Shawne Merriman memory?

The defense wasn’t worth mentioning until Shawne got here. Shawne filled a void that we had been missing since the team released JR. And that’s saying something. A lot of players made a lot of money, riding his coat-tails. I wonder if aj had spent as much effort to try to get Shawne back on the field, as he did trying to get rid of him, would we still be seeing LightOut football?
Well I hope he comes back to we’re it all started, to say goodbye.

People on other sites that don’t share our SD love for the guy are really bashing him. I still love this guy, he changed everything at the top of his game and was the biggest force I think Ever too deal with. I also think Tila Tequila ruined it all and his life just went out of control after the injury. But hey he was young, hopped up on roids, banging hot chicks all over the place…I can’t be mad at him for being young and dumb.

Too many Shawne Merriman memories to count. I think my top 3 are ending Priest Holmes career( that sounds bad but that hit was vicious you could here the crack of the collision over the announcers). The playoff game against the Titans where he ran across the field to tackle Chris Brown and punched the ball loose. And his 3 sack game against the Bills when he came back from suspension

anyone got a clip of merriman hitting holmes?

I can still hear that hit on Priest Holmes. The sad thing is I bet Priest Holmes still hears it in his nightmares.

He could not play the game without being juiced; we should thank A. J. Smith for another wasted draft pick. The lights out dance reminds me of another ‘over rated” player the Chargers had to deal with.

Didn’t he retire when the league took away his juice?

    My favorite memory:

I was sitting in a sports bar in Tacoma watching the Bolts play ShEli and the Gnats. It was the final few seconds of the game, and a commercial came on, so we went outside to smoke. I said to her “You know how I’d like this game to end? Shawne coming around the end and taking Eli down for the win.”

Finished the smoke, went back inside, and watched Shawne do exactly that. It was awesome.
