The San Diego Chargers Need To Get Philip Rivers To Restructure His Deal

Tom Brady restructured his contract and now there is talk that the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to restructure the contract for Ben Roethlisberger. Both the Steelers and the Patriots are getting some much needed cap relief after the restructured contracts and it will give them a little wiggle room in free agency.

The Chargers are right up against the cap and need to hit up Philip Rivers about a possible restructure. We have a ton of needs on the offensive line and could use some extra dough for a new offensive tackle, some offesnive guards and possibly a running back.

We have to find a way to bring Louis Vasquez back. We could also use some money to bring back Antoine Cason. Then we need to dip into free agency a little also.

The draft in April will fill some big needs, but we don’t want to have a ton of holes going into that draft. Tom Telesco has a ton of work to get done and a little extra change in his pocket will do wonders.

That makes sense but I’m not sure that PR is going to want to do it unless he’s getting a good structured deal like Brady on the back end. Brady on paper is losing money but he got 3 mill just signing the paper and watch them restructure his deal one or two more times so he can get more and not hit the cap. The question is, can Telesco run a deal like that?

  • RussinSactown

Brady will make $57,000,000 the next five years.Very lucrative guaranteed money

That is less than what Drew Brees makes per year. Say what you want, but Brady did leave some on the table. Some of these other QBs could do the same.

I keep playing out move Telesco will do in my head and it’s driving me crazy. Im anxiously waiting for him to free up some money! I’m just curious of how he fixes the mess AJ has left in place????? Come on Telesco were all waiting!!

I was waiting for a post like this ever since Brady’s deal was announced..
I like Rivers but the only way I think we should restructure his deal is if we are sure he can get back to his glory days or else it will mean giving up more in the long run!

We do need Rivers to give the team some more room so we have something to work with as to the salary cap. Rivers doesn’t know these guys so probably not likely to happen this year, but maybe. Certain level of trust has to exist between the parties.

After the way he played last season and before I think his contract isn’t the only thing that needs to be restructured. His eye sight needs to be as well.

The Bolts are stuck with Rivers even if he restructures his (over paid) contract. He still has an arm, but he has seen better days as a quality QB. I am waiting for the (new blood) GM and Head Coach to do something that shows they are in town to win games and not be patsy’s for the bad decisions of Dean Spanos.

When they get the weapons for Rivers and fix the O-Line, and they start winning again, you will see that blaming it on Rivers was incorrect.

      • 1961 Fan

The kid, Rivers has a great arm, however he cannot run and if out of the protected pocket he is less than stellar as an Elite QB. With the O line problems corrected I believe Rivers is flustered with the lack of protection and now he is in a funk with the overall direction the Bolts have gone. If you watched any of the games the last two years you could see the arguments Rivers had with HC Norv Turner. It may be that he is damaged from those experiences.

Pops, and how did we get those 14-2 11-5 and 13-3 seasons? Was it because of PR’s running ability? Nope LT, Gates, turner, Sproles and VJ did most of that. My point, no matter what you think of Rivers he’s not a terrible QB because he can’t run. He’ s not a bad QB now, because he didn’t pick the players, or let them go, and he didn’t call the plays either. Hey I get it, he is not Drew Bree’s. I miss him too. However we need to accept two things.
          1) Drew ain’t coming back. aj made sure of that.
          2) QB’s with a 108 passer rating, “don’t grow on trees”. Also, his current rating, is a reflection of what is “not” around him.
Take it easy on the kid, he has a new HC an management to help get back on track.

If you could have it your way, who would you like as QB then?

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Pops would want Dan Fouts to come out the booth to run the team

Thanks to a. J. Smith the saints won a sb already with my qb. Drew Bree’s I think Alex smith would make a better signal caller than rivers, we now have to contend with The improving chiefs besides Peyton manning and the broncos, who would choose over rivers? Pops

Does anyone question that Larry Fitzgerald is one of the best out there? How come, seeing he didn’t do much this past year? Does he have bad eyes? Maybe they should redo his contract, or trade him. No… it wasn’t his issue and we all know that. Same for Rivers–the team was gutted. Smith and whoever else did not provide Rivers with decent players and there was no o-line. I don’t mean to be rude, but all of ya talking about getting rid of Rivers probably want us to trade for Kevin Kolb.

Restructure Rivers Cap killing salary and use the free space to go get Revis. This would be the biggest FA splash move the new FO could make. With our current front seven Revis would make the BOLT D special. Great O-line options are not gonna be available in the early rounds of this draft.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

The key here is it has to be a mutually agreed upon restructuring as Rivers is under contract.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

It looks like every player in the NFL with a huge contract is being asked to restructure, I hope we can with a couple guys but we are not hearing 0 Charger news yet, Kevin Acee is going to start making things up soon if nothing happens

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Hahahaha… He isn’t the puppet anymore. He still hasn’t worked his way to Telesco yet

  • miketuck

I agree that in the grand sceem of things the idea is to win, and if restructuring his contract will help then he should. On the other side, the last 2 years of money made by AJ Smith should be returned as Rivers took a pounding at the expense of Smith’s lack of devotion to the offensive line. Rivers career is shortening because of the lack of depth Smith had in filling a teams needs correctly. Oline is the most important thing to a offense. And defense as far as that goes. Olines that are as lousey as the Chargers have had don’t give the defense any rest. Rivers deserves any extra he’s getting and Spanos should cut back on the price of management to offset the damage he did by not firing Smith last year.

  • miketuck

1961; They had a shot with Lee last year. He outplayed the others in the preseason by using his quick rear/ quick release to complete his passes. He had great feet and could scramble, but he was cut so clipboard could come back. Rivers deserves a chance behind a formidable line. You can’t throw from your butt all the time. And even if he could scramble you can’t run a team while running. New blood here, new blood there, I heard people yelling for new blood everywhere when it was the Oline and a GM and Coach that were misusing alot of very talented players. Trent Dilfer proved you don’t have to be a great QB, it takes a team.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I don’t understand the love for Jarrett Lee. Jarrett Lee? The quarterback that has no NFL job all last season?

  • arnie

Let see, restructure deal, stay upright and clean.
Keep money, run for my life all next season?
Sounds like an easy answer. The Chargers are asking for some help, from PR. I figure he should give it, since it was his big mouth that went to management, to endorse norv for one more year. It also spelled the end of VJ. I think he owes them one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Drew Brees is talking about doing a restructuring. But these guys have trust in the GM and management. No guy wants to restructure if he gets screwed in the end if he already has an existing binding contract.

Rivers has to trust that the GM will not double deal him later if he makes a good faith offer to restructure his existing contract.

If they are not asking Rivers or approaching him on this issue, leads me to believe that they are not sure of Rivers–which is understandable. Neither side really know each other.
