2013 NFL Mock Draft: The San Diego Chargers Select…

Tuesday morning and time to check in at what the mothership Fansided.com has for us as our mock draft selection:

11. San Diego Chargers  – Lane Johnson, OT/Oklahoma

Thanks to some great Senior Bowl practices, Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson is rising up draft boards at a pretty quick rate and due to some names dropping out he could go higher than expected. Jake Matthews and Taylor Lewan deciding to return to college means there’s a lack of supply for the high demand of offensive tackles at the top of the NFL Draft. San Diego is going to want to protect Philip Rivers and that starts with improving the offensive line.

I am sick and tired of this selection. the more and more I see Lane Johnson mocked to the Chargers, the more and more I grow in hatred with this selection.

I would rather select an offensive guard with the pick over Lane Johnson. Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher will probably be gone with the 11th pick, but Chance Warmack and Jonathan Cooper could still be around. If they aren’t there, let’s select Alabama CB Dee Milliner.

Consider me in the camp against Lane Johnson. He probably will blow blow the combines away this weekend and make me second guess my hatred.

Am I the only one that isn’t loving the Lane Johnson mocks?

I’m looking forward to the draft after the 1st round. Mostly, I’m curious about how a draft with no input from AJ would look like.

No, you’re not the only one against Lane. I mean, he’s probably top 20 talent right? but we’re in the prime position to get one of those top 7-10 talent guys (the guards you mentioned and Milliner) that slip in positions of major need. IMO if Fisher is gone, you either take best player available (G/CB/maybe even DE) or trade down to a place you’re more comfortable picking the player your like.

that is what i am talking about! If we take Johnson, we will be passing on some talented players on the board to REACH for a tackle. There is no reason to be reaching!

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That’s true man, for every QB taken in the top 10 (God I hope it’s like 2-3, but probably won’t be) there will be a top 10 talent position player pushed towards our pick at #11

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m with you on this one too, Lane Johnson was not even mentioned as a first round pick when both Lewan and Matthews both looked like they were coming out. Seriously he was not in any 1st round mocks then, then after he kicked some ass at the Senior bowl practices he started shooting up the board, then after the Senior bowl game he is a #11 Pick? I don’t think so…. Why was he not considered top 15 before hand or even top 30? Last thing in the world we need to do is draft a guy at #11 and he ends up needing work and not starting right away.

I think he is a major reach at the #11 and we should go with the BPA even if it’s Mingo and it makes not much sense or a guy like Jordan I could see going after speedy defensive guys and using other picks or FA to fill in some of the O-line spots. I can’t wait for this draft and for some Bolt cuts.

J.J. Watt wasn’t on any 1st round mocks until after the combine either.

Agree. Not TOTALLY saying that they couldn’t be first round talent… but, nobody would have wanted us to take Fisher or especially Johnson in the first round before those other two went back to school. Deperation is a stinky cologne.. lol.

I say if Fisher is gone either pick Warmack or Milliner, those are my only two options. Or else trade back. Offensive line is one of those positions that always drop if you’re not the absolute top prospects. Every year teams reach at WR, DB and QB. But it seems like o line usually go where they should. Remember a couple years ago top LTs Castonzo and Nate Solder didn’t get picked by the colts and Patriots until after 17, Riley Reiff and Brian Bulaga weren’t picked until almost the end. Even last year Kalil was the best Tackle prospect since Jake Long and he went 4th. Look how far Decastro dropped and Jonathan Martin didn’t go until round 2. There we’re some good second rounders like Bobby Massie, Mitchell Schwartz. we know Joeckel and Fisher are top 10 prospects hopefully some teams get desperate and trade up to grab Geno Smith, Nassib, or Star Loutuleli and Fisher drops into our laps. It is not necessary to find our franchise LT in this draft id be happy if they just find good replacements at RT and LG and get someone who can man the LT consistently until a definitive LT is found wether that be through FA, developing Harris through a full offseason, or if by a divine miracle Big Lazy’s ass gets whipped into shape

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

What do you guys think they should do if:

Eagles take Joeckel, Lions take Milliner, Cards take Fisher and Titans take Warmack? It’s very likely this could happen. I just hope a couple teams reach for a QB.

      • JoseSD

Trade down for Johnathan Cooper or Kenny Vaccaro. or even further down and take Barret Jones,Arthur Brown,Xavier Rhodes and pick up an extra 2nd and possibly 3rd or 4th rounder. What I like is that Shariff Floyd is creeping up into the top 10and Bjoern Weorner is falling out off the top 5 meaning someone else could take him who thought he wouldn’t be available. Im also hoping someone reaches in thr top 10 for WR Patterson from Tennessee

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i am with @JoseSD:disqus on this one… trade down or take Cooper with the 11th pick. hopefully someone wants to get to that 11th pick… Patterson is getting a ton of hype right now too. Someone may want to trade to 11 to grab him.

I was thinking the same thing about DeCastro (and others) too. As unpopular, and far fetched as it is… Big Lazy needs to become “UN-lazy”, with the new regime in town. He is definitely a scoundrel… but the ideal situation would be him in a Charger uni, and on the field for 16 games. Very few in that locker room earned the right to grumble about anything last season. If Telesco & McCoy determine that he is capable, then I stand by it. I trust their evaluation, whether he stays or goes. They are the professionals. AJ & Norv were weak leaders.

  • IronMountain

Hopefully Fisher falls to us, if not I would take Johnson or Warmack.
The O line stinks and has to improve, we can live with our corners, even if Jammer leaves Without at least three new starters for the O line the Chargers are risking Rivers career, along with the running backs careers.

  • thegorn

I think Lane Johnson is a reach at 11 too. The same is true with Chance Warmack. What that means to me is: trade down.

  • BlueBoltFan

I think Lane Johnson has equivalent potential to Clay Matthews for his position (not saying he will become an equivalent player, but he could). His size, speed (recently clocked at 4.67 if you can believe it) and athleticism are at least as high as Joeckel and Fisher if not higher. He has a high game IQ, sells out on blocks, and plays with a mean streak. He’s also played well against the elite college competition. He’s just more raw and inexperienced than the two guys ahead of him. But that’s exactly what they said about Clay Matthews’ pass rushing coming out of USC. Now look.

It’s more a question of whether or not the coaching staff can get him ready to play. Chance Warmack is a better overall player hands down, but the guard position is lower valued. This is why Carl Nicks, considered by many to be the best guard in the league, was allowed to leave while the top tackles stay on their teams for a decade despite the cost of deals and franchise tags. Chance Warmack can’t save Rivers from Tamba Hali and Von Miller. Fisher and Lane Johnson can (possibly).

  • BlueBoltFan

P.S. I’d be ecstatic with Milliner, too.

  • Preston Niedert

Honestly guys free agency will decide how team approach the draft. Who know how the draft will play out I’m not worried though in Tom telesco we trust right.

  • tbell11

I would love for OG Chance Warmack, but since the Chargers are switching to a zone-blocking scheme Guards don’t go that high and plus Warmack is more of a power scheme guy.

  • Cgoodness13

We should trade down and then draft Johnson, we are actually set at guard believe it or not if we resign Vasquez because troutman was suppose to be a 1st or 2nd round pick before he got injured and we drafted him, he has never allowed a sack in his college career.

You are not alone, Ernie. But, you got my article, so you know that…. Lol.

  • laronse hubbard

take the best player @ guard , tackle or cb either way we need a franchise player to not reach for a player trade back if u have to.
