San Diego Chargers: The Salary Cap Situation

Mr. T (Tom Telesco) and the San Diego Chargers have a lot of work to do this offseason. They have a few players that are free agents that they have to get re-signed. They also have to do some work in making more room under the salary cap. There will be some pink slips handed out.

John Clayton just released some salary cap numbers and the Chargers are currently $8.7 million under the cap. In contrast, the Cincinnati Bengals have the most room under the cap with $55.1 million available. The Denver Broncos are $18.5 million under, Kansas City Chiefs are $16.1 million under and the Oakland Raiders have work to do. They are $4.5 million over the salary cap.

The Chargers will have to get creative if they want to sign some big name free agents. Telesco has preached that he wants to build the team through the draft, but I am sure he will want to dip into the free agent market for some players. Most fans are just hoping for one good name to be brought to town. Can’t wait to see what the team does. This offseason is too long!

8.7 million under the cap that a good start cut some ppl already and you’ll have more money what taking so long how hard is it to cut the big lazy he should be frist on the list followed by whitehurst and a few others.

Don’t hold me to this, but I believe I read that Gaither got a multi-year deal from the Chargers. Yeah, if we get rid of him, that is fine, but I think we still take a cap hit as he is due some guaranteed money for this year.

I started looking into it and AJ Smith made some real bad deals.

Stephanie, no doubt AJ made some bad moves last year in free agency. The thing is, at the time, they didn’t look so bad! His moves on the defensive side of the ball, worked well. On the offensive side, that’s where we have a problem. AJ didn’t bring in a single FA that helped on the line… nada. Receivers didn’t pan out. Royal, due to injuries and Meachum due to his play and lack of chemistry with Rivers. It’ll be interesting to see how the new staff handles these players. Cut them or feel they can be salvaged. Bringing Spurlock back seemed like the best move. Question is, why did we cut him in the first place?
