Joe Flacco A Better Quarterback Than Philip Rivers?

Here we go. Here is that talk of Joe Flacco and elite coming up. That talk that we were worried about hearing with a Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl win.

There is already chatter from Chargers fans saying that our team would be better off with Joe Flacco at quarterback over Philip Rivers. There is already chatter that Joe Flacco is a better quarterback than Philip Rivers.

Is Joe Flacco better than Philip Rivers?
This year he is. Last year he might have been also.

BUT….

Joe Flacco is NOT a better quarterback than Philip Rivers. The Baltimore Ravens had a better TEAM surrounding Flacco. They have better protection for him and they have better receivers around him. They are Super Bowl champions because their TEAM is better.

How quickly we forget the greatness of Philip Rivers. Rivers passed for 4000+ yards in 4 seasons and also led the team to the league’s best offense just a couple of seasons ago, but all people remember are his interceptions the last few seasons and the fact that he has missed the playoffs for 3 straight seasons. It wasn’t too long ago that we were debating if Philip was a Hall of Fame player or not.

Surround Philip with some weapons and give him time to throw the football and he will put up those video game numbers all over again. That is what Mike McCoy and Tom Telesco will be working to do this offseason. Offensive lineman will be high on the priority list. We might look at some receivers and we will look into adding another running back. Philip Rivers will be the key for this team to make it back into the playoffs.

Think about who was making plays on offense for the Chargers last season. Malcom Floyd is at best a number 2 receiver. Our best receiver was Danario Alexander, who was roaming the streets until we gave him a chance. Our best running back was Ronnie Brown who couldn’t really run the football. Ryan Mathews proved to be injury prone again and still was fighting through fumble issues. The offense needs weapons!

Share your opinions Beaters. Do you agree? Or do you think that Joe Flacco is a better QB than Philip?

No weapons. No line. All Rivers could do the last couple years was play chuck and duck. Any QB with our team last years would look anemic.

Give Rivers that Ravens O-Line & we’ll see whose better. RIVERS BABY!!!

  • Sergio Quintero

That is why its not a discussion the first rounder must be OLineman, we have seen what Philip produced when Gaither decided to play, so Fisher or Johnson is the pick until they sign veteran free agent OLT. Still pushing hard for Andy Levitre for LG and he can also play RT.

    • RussinSactown

We have to get an OLT first round. Unless Leon Sandcastle is available, then we gotta pick him up.

    • BlueBoltFan

I agree 100%. A scenario I would like to see (that I think the Chargers can do) is:

      First:

Cut Jared Gaither and chase him out of the building.

      Then:

LT – Draft Eric Fisher (or Lane Johnson)

LG – Sign FA Andy Levitre

      C – Nick Hardwick

      RG – Re-sign Louis Vasquez

RT – Draft a RT (like Quessenberry or Bakhtiari) in RD 3-4 or find a solid RT in FA to compete with Jeromey Clary; best player in camp gets the starting job.

      • Sergio Quintero

I would agree with your plan almost completely. Brenan Williams OT from UNC has been rated as 2nd round talent, but had a torn labrum would make a nice 3rd round guy.

I like it! What about RB and WR?

        • tubbs45

Gotta re-sign Denario, maybe mccoy can work some sort of reverse mojo with meachum and VINCENT F’in BROWN will be back to form (Please God, Please!!!). Running back is a possible Mid-Draft option depending on free agency moves. Not sure if we’ll see Battle in the back field again. Still wish Toddman was here, but there are some great RB/HB in the draft.

Oh how I hate Jackie Battle as a running back. He is a good special teams player though

Personally, both are good QB’s. You could go tit-for-tat, back and forth, up & down…. it all depends on how an individual grades a QB. You could go on forever, and make a good case for each of them. I am not going to discount Flacco. He seems to be an OK guy, and he has proven to be a great QB. He even pulled a Babe Ruth this year, and said he was the best in the league. Then he went out and performed like he was. I can’t hate on that. He went up against all of the “elite” QB’s in the playoffs (who also had good teams built around them), and played great. He was on the money for every game I saw him in, anyway. I can’t help but be happy for the guy, and hope he gets the contract he deserves. I say Philip Rivers is better, but I’m sure a Ravens fan would say otherwise.

    • tubbs45

He went up against elite Defenses and won. kuddos to him, but I’d still take Rivers. I would hope that Ravens fans would have their QBs back after he gets them a ring. He played very out of character 11 TDs no ints, amazing what a new Offensive Coordinator can do for a player. I hope the Whizenator has some of that magic with Rivers!!!

I agree… with all of that.

  • Bobby

    Rivers all day baby !!

  • Pels04

Flacco is up and down. WAY up and WAY down. Playing like a complete garbage qb to playing like an elite qb all in the same year with the same OL. Rivers has proven how he plays both with a good OL and a bad OL. Good OL and Rivers is an elite qb. Garbage OL and Rivers is still an above average qb. Cant say the same about Flacco

That’s why rivers has a ring right… Wait! Lmao

  • arnie

I got banned on another site for saying this. Who has more rings?
At the end of the day every franchise says, QB is the most important position on the team. With that said, Joe Flacco is the better QB. Why do i say that? It depends of the criteria you want to use. We can throw out all the numbers, facts, excuses we want. When it’s all said an done, Flacco lead his team to 5 straight playoff appearances, and is now Superbowl Champion. Something Phillip has not been able to do, with more talent at his disposal.

Yes, PR had AJ an Norv as his support. boohoo, cry me a river. Drew Brees had AJ as well and didn’t become a better QB until he sought outside help, to become a better QB. Bree’s is also a Superbowl champion.
At some point we have to stop making excuses for Phillip. that’s all we did when norv was here. make excuses. if Phillip thought they had a better chance at winning, he was just as capable of going to the front office, an demanding better protection, an re-signing Vj an SProles. Just like he used his mouth to bring back norv for 2012 season.
Suck it up, Joe Flacco got the job done.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

You got banned for that?!?! That is some sort of ridiculous

      • tubbs45

Yeah AJ didnt want him on his blog anymore.

        • arnie

          LOL!

      • arnie

Yup. I can’t remember the details, but I’m pretty sure it was based exclusively on the numbers. When I brought up the “rings” argument, I was basically declared an idiot, because I didn’t want to line up my opinion with the numbers. I’ve always said, ” numbers don’t lie, but they don’t tell the whole truth”. That’s what I always try to use my thinking brain, gather facts, and give a reasonable opinion as close the truth, as I can. Peyton has 1. Eli has 2. Brady has 3. Bree’s has 1. Hell, even Rothlesburger an Dilfer have 3 between them. Yet those two guys did more with there limited skill sets, than Phillip did with his much superior ones.

        Killin’ the facts, with truth….

    • BoltNative

Flacco IS an elite quarterback. I said many times during the game “that Rivers could never make that pass!” or rollout right for that matter. Flacco has a stronger arm, is more accurrate, is more mobile, and doesn’t choke like Rivers fumbling balls or just letting the ball fall out of his hand! Who does that?!? Sorry but facts are facts.

Give me Rivers and the Ravens Offensive Line…

Post season numbers comparison. Flacco is way better than Rivers, nuff said.

  • Anonymous

People seem to forget Rivers played in the playoffs on a torn ACL. Philip is tough, and has heart

  • Lee

Flacco is a much better QB than Rivers…All those INTs just and not making the Playoff for three straight season is terrible…It tells me that he couldn’t carry his team..He had a couple lucky 4000 season and you mean to tell me it’s kool to miss the post season 3 years in a row…
