Chargers Eyeing FSU K Dustin Hopkins

The San Diego Chargers met up with the Florida State University K Dustin Hopkins yesterday, per Walter Football. Nick Novak is a free agent and the new regime may not want to keep him around.

Novak didn’t have a job in the NFL until AJ Smith gave him a chance a couple of seasons ago. He was again available at the start of last season, but still nobody wanted to pick him up. Other teams employed David Akers and Billy Cundiff before they gave a job to Novak. AJ Smith again was the guy to give Novak a job.

Would Tom Telesco and Mike McCoy be as high on Novak as AJ Smith was?

Dustin Hopkins is the most prolific kicker in ACC history. He will be one of the top kickers taken in the draft and may be worth a look in the late rounds. Some people hate the idea of drafting kickers, but having a good kicking game has done us well.

Is Nick Novak our guy or are we going to bring in a new kid to handle the kicking duty.

I totally agree, young, rookie contract and hopefully a game winner!

I like the kicker SD special teams could use an upgared @ kicker. does no 1 see SD getting Eddie Lacy RB from Alabama?? Y not? he is the exact opposite of RM 24, nice 1, 2 punch. what team needs a power RB more than us? any 1 b4 us in the draft?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Don’t really see us going RB in the first round. Could see us get one in 3rd or 4th though

If he is there on the 2nd round, then I wouldn’t mind making that pick. I just would hate for us to use our first round draft pick on a runningback. Would rather have a an o-lineman in the first

Novak doesn’t have too strong of a leg anyways, we need one that can boom it like Janikowski or Zuerlin from the Rams. Kaeding and his weak ass leg (and lack of composure in the big game) cost both Playoff games against the Jets.and a chance at OT against the Pats in that loss after the 2006 season

im with you! really wouldnt be opposed to drafting a kicker. not really a need, but it would be sweet to get a kid that can kill it and make the big game kick for once

  • tbell11

Wouldn’t mind the kicker, but if its down between a need and the kicker, we better choose the need.

There was nothing wrong with the kicker we have now. I say keep him and concentrate on getting a massive offensive line. Both superbowl bound brothers have massive O lines, I suggest we do the same.

I agree we need some massive OL help, but with a young rookie contract it could free up more cap space to buy more beef up front!!!
