The San Diego Chargers new head coach pretty much said the only words I needed to hear to be on board. In his first interview with Ricky Henne at Chargers.com, Mike McCoy stated that “I never was a Raiders fan”. There are other compelling reasons to like this guy, but I will make this number one.
Here are some other reasons to like Mike McCoy and believe that he has what it takes to lead the Chargers.
He was a quarterback. I always appreciate coaches who actually played the game. After high school McCoy played for Long Beach and Utah. His college career was not every eventful and McCoy was not selected in the 1995 draft. Even though he was not drafted he managed to get short stints with the Broncos and the Packers. He was slated as third string to Brett Favre but never had the opportunity to take a snap.
He has 12 years of coaching experience and knows how to run an offense. After four years of running around trying to have a pro career (with stints on the Amsterdam Admirals and Calgary Stampeders) he landed on the Carolina Panthers coaching staff where he stayed until 2008. After the 2008 season, the Broncos picked McCoy up as their new offensive coordinator. The Broncos had successful passing seasons and McCoy even revamped the offense in 2011 to adjust for Tim Tebows lack of passing skill. The Bronco’s were number one in rushing that year.
He has already made some good moves and picked Ken Whisenhunt as his new OC, I am feeling optimistic. Old with the old and in with the new. Welcome Magic Mike to the San Diego Chargers!
