Ken Whisenhunt Is The San Diego Chargers New Offensive Coordinator

Ken Whisenhunt will be the new San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator, per Adam Schefter! He was passed over for the head coaching position with the team, but he will take over the offensive play calling for Mike McCoy. I love that McCoy will be bringing his experience to the coaching staff.

The guys at Chargers Park seem to know what they are doing all of a sudden. They have built a nice coaching staff so far with Mike McCoy leading the charge. Ken Whisenhunt will be calling the plays on the offense and John Pagano will be running the defense. Now, who can we get to run the special teams? Can we add Mike Mularkey on the staff to be the tight ends coach? He worked with Whisenhunt in Pittsburgh.

I LOVE THIS MOVE!

How will the offense look like under Whiz?, I remember the Cardinals with Kurt Warner and it looked a lot like the Rams under Martz, but that could have been to make Warner comfortable. He clearly has been strapped with horrible QB’s since Warner left, but I don’t know what to expect, I know that when he had a good QB, Warner was throwing for 4,500 yards, and they made a super bowl, so clearly there is potential for it to be a good hire.

He also was the OC for Pittsburgh before going to AZ. He likes throwing in some trick plays here and there… at least he did when he had Antwaan Randle El.

      • Sergio Quintero

He need a player to be creative with, maybe Tavon Austin in the 2nd round?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

of course. Legedu Naanee or something. Ronnie Brown? I hope nobody says Tim Tebow.. haha

          • Sergio Quintero

If McCoy is not interested in Tebow as a gimmick player, who could possibly be interested in him? The Jaguars have already bowed out? Canadian league?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

CFL… let him work on that arm

      • arnie

True. keep this in mind as well. Where Whisenhunt was the OC in pittsburgh an HC in arizona, are two vastly different approaches to offenses. Ken was able to be successful in either. Coach McCoy, is looking for balance. and it will be His decision on which way they go. i expect some trick plays, i just don’t see them as a staple. the Steelers had to be creative, with no real QB.

  • GoJoeBruinUCLA

    Whoa, that’s a helluva hire.

  • RussinSactown

OK, Telesco can stay! The man came here ready to do work! First he drops in a solid coaching staff. I’m sure when free agency rolls around we’ll see some real “Wow” moments there too. Very happy with the hire!

  • tubbs45

I did not think that would even be possible. but kuddos!!! The Wolf is making shit happen…

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i gotta give this credit to Telesco and McCoy now

      • tubbs45

It is more fun to say its the Wolf though…. I do think that was the GM / HC call, kuddos to the whole group! Kick ass job so far! Cant wait for FA and the Draft!!!!

Truly sad…Did he already blow all the money he made from the Chargers? He can’t recover until he admits to himself he’s got a problem…frickin’ addiction and denial suck…
Very ecstatic with the direction the Chargers are going so far! Go Chargers!!

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahaha… ok, it does sound better

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

LOL…it is more fun to say!!!! But, yeah… great move!

        • arnie

          yeah i agree.

      • arnie

And don’t forget future president Spanos.

Things are looking up. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

  • DougM

    YES!! What a coup!

Way to go Mr. Telesco!!!! Can’t wait to see what free agency & the draft brings.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

    How exciting!

  • Joey Nicks

Not gonna lie pretty awkward that i am agreeing w/ everything they are doing! Lol

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

it doesnt feel right… but it feels so good. ha

      • arnie

Is it my imagination, or does all this make it feel good to be a Charger fan again!

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Not saying keeping Norv an extra year was a good idea AT ALL… but, do you think we would we have gotten candidates of this caliber if we were hiring last year? Hmmmmm….

          • tubbs45

for sure it would have been different. hard to say, but glad “It is what it is!”

          • Nick in PB

I’m not a poker player but I am all in on this one! Slick move and I like it a lot! Is it a done deal that Pagano is coming back? Last I heard, we gave him permission to talk to the Browns??? Made me think we weren’t interested. Anybody know?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Acee said that he would be back… Only person I heard the browns thing from was hacksaw. Did you hear from somewhere else?

          • Nick in PB

Sorry Ernie… not sure where I heard it. Do you think it hasn’t been mentioned much because he is under contract and that being said, he IS the D Coordinator until further notice?

          • blu3ny3llow

We would have probably got malurky

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

            Or, overpaid for Fisher.

          • arnie

absolutely not. i think that was part of Deans thinking, there was really nobody out there that you could say, was an improvement from Norv an AJ. I understood that. didn’t like it, but that’s the way it is. This year the candidates were there. like the draft, you gotta’ know when the time is right to move on personnel.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I know what you mean… it almost makes me feel like it’s too good to be true. I got burned pretty hard, after being overly optimistic these last few years.. hahaha!

      • Joey Nicks

I feel ya what will be interesting is the draft. Am i the only one who thinks we need a stand out 1 WR along with an offensive tackle?

        • Nick in PB

If Alexander stays healthy, we will have our stand out guy! OT is the must have position!

      • Nick in PB

I feel you Pete! I am feeling pretty good about the way things are shaping up… really good!!!

  • http://fansided.com/ Matt Blake

Chargers just full out take it to the Cards. #ouch.

    • tubbs45

Sucks to suck!! suck it cards!!!

  • arnie

Holy crackers! I had a feeling they were looking at Wisenhunt. Experienced play caller. Super Bowl trip, an winner, and experience as a HC.

  • http://www.facebook.com/arturo.suarez.127 Arturo Suarez

    I like this pick.

  • tiiiiiiiiiiit11

Is this what a professional football organization does?!?!
Draft, free agency, and kick the padres out to give the Bolts Petco Park!

  • Joel Garcia

I know raiders fans are mad right now. knowing were making big moves and there getting left in the dust. lol #boltup

  • 619chargers4life

things are finally starting to look up

  • 619chargers4life

ive been so busy so i may be out of the loop but did they say they were keeping John Pagano ?

  • Jase Wilson

Russ Grimm as the new OLine coach?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I think he could be. Only makes sense

  • veazy

Does this make the Chargers the Miami Heat of coaching?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

No… Not that crazy awesome… But good

  • blu3ny3llow

Man this was an awesome move…i was already settling for the lower level OCs or QB coaches looking to move up…

  • Nick in PB

I have loved every move they’ve made so far. What a far cry from when they fired Marty and brought in Norv!!! I know that most of us said… WTF!!!! Not this time… good job Chargers!
