Everyone wants to link Indianapolis Colts OC Bruce Arians with the San Diego Chargers because of the hiring of Tom Telesco and the obvious need for bringing in an offensive mind. But they only worked together for one season in Indianapolis. I don’t know how strong that bond really is.
Here is another name that will start getting mentioned around here a lot: San Francisco 49ers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman. Roman and Telesco were teammates in college at John Carroll University. Telesco played wide receiver and Roman played on the defensive line. Both of them are making their rise up in the NFL at the same time.
Roman has worked under Jim Harbaugh for the last few seasons at Stanford and with the 49ers. He runs an offense that relies heavily on the run and also focuses on ball security. The 49ers offense has ranked first and second in giveaways over the last two seasons under his watch.
Charger fans know too much about turnovers. Every time Philip starts running or throws a deep pass, we wonder where the ball will end up. Every time Ryan Mathews got hit, we wondered if he would put the ball on the ground.
Roman has also worked with the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens in his career. Telesco worked with him while with the Panthers. I wonder if Roman would look to hire an offensive coordinator to work with him or if he would like to call his own plays?
Roman will not be talking to teams until the 49ers are eliminated out of the playoffs. If the Chargers seem to slack in their process a little bit, then we may be stalling to get a chance to speak with Roman. The Jacksonville Jaguars could also be interested in Roman. Their new GM Dave Caldwell also went to school with Roman.
You know another coaching candidate that went to the same school and also played the same position as Tom Telesco? Josh McDaniels.
