Texas A&M LT Luke Joeckel Will Declare For NFL Draft

Oct 20, 2012; College Station, TX, USA; Texas A

Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel has made his decision and he will enter the 2013 NFL Draft. Joeckel is expected to be a top 10, maybe top 5 selection, in the upcoming draft and the Chargers are likely to miss out on the opportunity to choose him to protect Philip Rivers’ backside.

Melvin Ingram wasn’t supposed to slide down to us last seaosn, but he did. Don’t think that will be the case for Joeckel since left tackles are a high priority for a number of teams.

If we do not address offensive tackle in free agency, then our priority in the draft will be to find someone to take over the left tackle position. Jared Gaither will be shown the door in the offseason and he will probably have a fake groin pull on the way out of Chargers Park.

Joeckel is a 6-foot-6, 310 pound All American beast left tackle. He helped protect Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel to an 11-2 record and a Cotton Bowl victory over Oklahoma. He will be protecting someone’s backside in 2013, it just won’t be Philip’s.

If he slides to 11, then without a doubt get him.

  • DanishBolt

It would be fantastic if we could get him. If not, I’d be happy with Matthews or Lewan.

But if we are in a situation where the OTs are gone, we will probably be able to grab a starter for the D. Jarvis Jones, Star Lutuleilei, Manti Te’o or Dee Milliner might drop to us if there is a run on tackles (and QBs). Warmack is another option, he was a beast yesterday in the bowl game.

As long as we don’t make some stupid reach for in the first. I think we need to get a starter with that pick. An easy pick for the new GM to make us fans forget about AJ!

definitely have to get someone that starts. warmack wouldnt be bad at all. he can play that LG spot next to some new LT. If the left side of the line doesnt have 2 new starters, then the GM messed up somewhere

      • DanishBolt

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it would cost to much to cut Gaither?
if we can’t get Lewan or Matthews we might have to start Gaither. My favorite FAs is Long and Vollmer, they could fix the O-line along with a first round draft pick

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i like long and vollmer as well for the tackle also. It would cost a lot to dump Gaither, but it seems that the team is leaning on releasing the big fella. Seems to be a cancer on the team.

          • DanishBolt

I think it’ll cost the same to dump him as it does to keep him.
When healthy, I really like him (mostly because he is the only tackle able to keep Rivers’ jersey clean)
I’d keep him as back-up, go for Vollmer in FA and go Lewan/Matthews in the draft, if they are gone, then defensive BPA/Warmack depending on other FA-transactions. And then we have to go with him this year and hope for a LT-prospect in next years draft.

You would think that Big Lazy want to get rid of that nickname this year

But for now I just want to know who our GM will be so we can get an end to the HC speculations.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

yea. it will cost the same money-wise. but will the locker room be pissed to have a guy that is skating through and just earning a paycheck. that is where it could hurt the chemistry of the team. maybe they keep him around during training camp to see if he will shape up and if he doesnt, dump the dude. either way, they need to make sure that he isnt relied upon as much as they did last season. need to make sure there is someone that can step up and do the job without him there.

          • DanishBolt

            I guess you are right.
But with Clary and two UDFAs as the other OTs I’m not sure the new GM/Coach can afford it talent-wise to cut him. But if we can land one of the top tackles in the draft and add some talent in FA, then I agree kick him off the team if he shows signs of being the old Big Lazy again this year (hard to see why it would change, but hopefully some competition could give him a push in the right direction)

Can he play the guard position?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

he is really tall for a guard spot. the Ravens tried to flip him over to right tackle before though.

        • RussinSactown

It may cost money to dump him but he’s just collecting paychecks now. We need a healthy tackle do drafting one of these guys would be a great move. BTW, What happened to the tackle we drafted with the torn pec? Is he going to be ready to compete for a spot or his he another “AJ flushed money down the drain” move?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

he plays guard. Johnnie Troutman out of Penn State. He could compete for the left guard position OR he could suck like Jonas Mouton. Really have no clue on him until he can play

I agree with almost everything, except I think that Te’o will be a bust. He whiffed on many tackles, looked out-powered and slow against Alabama (which is the closest to a nfl offensive front as you get in college football). Offensive line needs to be addressed in free agency as well as the draft.

  • JoseSD

Lewan and Matthews are both underclassmen yet to declare and im not opposed to getting Warmack or Barret Jones, Jones can play any spot on the line if all tackles are gone by #11 I think they could trade down and pick up Barret Jones later in the first, he could probably start immediately at RT or either Guard spot and maybe after this year he could take over for Hardwick, Hardwick doesn’t seem like hr wants to play many more seasons

    • DanishBolt

      BPA > Trade down

O-line is first priority but if we can’t get that I’ll gladly take whatever top D-talent that might fall a little on draft day. a d-line with Liuget, Star L. and reyes would be awesome. Or if we could add guys like Moore, Jones or Te’o our LBs would be set for years to come. Millner would really boost the talent in the DB-group

One way or another we could get a future star, which I’d prefer over a trade down to get a guy who’s greatest strength is versatility. Plus I really hope that David Molk can develop in to a starter after a year or two more behind Hardwick, so he can take over that spot.

I say go with Warmack and get a LT from free agency. Tackle is a deep position this year in free agency. Clady, Andre Smith, Gosder Cherilus, Will Beatty, Sebastian Vollmer, Phil Lodholt, Branden Albert, Sam baker to name a few. Even if they don’t go that route if Joeckel (and Lewan) are gone by eleven no other LT deserves being picked there.

    • DanishBolt

Jake Matthews (If he chooses to declare)? But you are right, it would really be a dumb move to reach for fisher.

Andre Smith and Vollmer play RT.

      • http://twitter.com/MachoMenos61 Edward Moretti

Both would be a great improvement over He Who Shall Not Be Named. Both are in PFF top 5 OT headed for FA.

        • DanishBolt

But Warmack is a beast in run blocking, hopefully RM can bounce back if he gets a guy like him to run behind.

  • tiiiiiiiiiiit11

Matthews isn’t entering the draft, he is staying to play with his brother. Joeckel will be long gone, and likewise with Lewan considering the teams ahead of us. We must draft the best available player at one of the many positions of need, not directly based on the greatest need. I would go with CB Milliner or DT Star if he is available by some miracle (that would make a nasty front 7). We have many holes to fill and need to make big moves in free agency

    • DanishBolt

Best case scenario is if there will be a few QBs who can sneak into top-10

  • tbell11

OT should be the first priority for the Chargers, but if all are gone before they pick CB Milliner should be the pick. If the Chargers just get screwed then ILB Manti Te’o would a logical choice to play alongside Butler for years to come.
