You Won’t Like The San Diego Chargers New Head Coach

We won’t like the San Diego Chargers new head coach. Anyone is better than Norv Turner, except this guy, that guy, that guy and this guy. There is something wrong with every possible candidate that is mentioned.

When fans look at a Head Coach that took his team to the Super Bowl and WON IT and still have reasons why they don’t want him as the head coach, then we may have to look at the mirror. We may have issues. Look at Jon Guden. Gruden won the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he won it with Tony Dungy’s team. Look at his record after that Super Bowl, that team was a train wreck.

Look at Bruce Arians. He is coming off a season in which he is getting nominations as coach of the year and people still don’t believe he has the experience to win. He reminds us too much of Norv Turner and his offensive genius. He is a one hit wonder playing in a poor division and benefited from a last place schedule and the emotions of a team fighting for Chuck Pagano.

Lovie Smith. He can’t develop an offense and our biggest need is to fix Philip Rivers and the offense. He runs a different defensive scheme than John Pagano and the roster does not fit his scheme. Just not good enough.

Mike Holmgren. We don’t want a retread. How long has he been out of the league?

Jim Mora… Need I really say anything?

Every time there is a possible head coaching candidate listed, people jump on and list envy reason why he will fail. Why he sucks. Honestly, we won’t like the new head coach. We never wanted Norv Turner to get the job and the new guy already looks like he is walking into the same trap.

Is there one guy that we all can agree upon? At least someone that can get a positive approval rating?

Chargers should go after Mike McCoy. Whether it’s Peyton Manning or Tim Tebow at QB, he gets the most out of what he has to work with.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I like Mike McCoy. Yeah, I think he could create a successful system for what are the Chargers’ strong suits.

      • Nick in PB

I like McCoy too, but can he transition to HC without making himself Offensive Coordinator too? We don’t know. I guess we will find out in the interview process, that’s IF we interview him.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

but what if it is Kyle Orton? the team didn’t look too good with orton under center and mccoy was running the offense.

I dont know anymore. Just hire some dam body already.

  • Joel Garcia

If the Chargers Don’t get Jon Gruden, they should go after David Shaw out of Stanford. He has a bright future especially after taking a Stanford team the got no love going into the season after Andrew Luck left.

    • http://twitter.com/stryfe9agb Andrew Beccarelli

I would really like David Shaw too, but he just signed that extension with Stanford. I don’t think he’s available.

    • DougM

Shaw is a great coach, and he’s from San Diego, but there’s no way he’s leaving Stanford for a while. It’s his dream job.

  • DanishBolt

Whisenhunt would be my personal favorite.

Just take a look at what he did the last time he had a QB. I think he can “fix” Rivers if we can get a FA-Tackle and draft Matthews, Lewan or Warmack.

    • jonpviv

a great coach is going to get results with less than great talent. In that sense, Whisenhunt showed he was a total bust in Arizona…

  • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

I could go for any coach that is offense minded to help get Rivers and our offense going and will keep Pagano. Also someone strong enough to convince whoever is in charge the pieces we need for Rivers.

  • davacho

well said man… i kind of feel bad for the new guy in a way. : )

Actually if my sex life wasn’t so great, these Chargers would have put me on a steady booze diet. You gotta handle that Ernie. Just sayin…

Unfortunately until someone comes in and wins us a Superbowl this will be the case. I really do think Norv got a bum rap out of his time here, while there was talent on the field he did some pretty good things in my opinion. Came in on his first year and got us over the playoff hump and almost into a superbowl with a banged up team in the playoffs. Pretty consistent for a few years following then the drop off in talent became imminent with the departure of LT, Turner, Sproles, VJ and a hand full of others. Norv was not the one that let all these players walk without replacing them with equal talent. But he sure took the brunt of the heat once this team could no longer produce W’s. Most people will not agree with me about this but Norv was never really the problem… AJ and his ego was.

    • DougM

I posted this in a different article, but this problem with AJ about letting our guys go is a poor one, IMO. You can blame him for not bringing in OL and making some bad draft picks, but do not agree in any way about these free agent losses.

Drew Brees: wasn’t all that great with the Bolts, good, but not great. Rivers had more potential and Brees got hurt. No problem with that choice. Brees recovered and has a perfect offense for him. Put him behind our current OL and he’d be useless.

Michael Turner: It was LT or Michael Turner, not both. Fans would have burned down Qualcomm if LT was let go then.

LT: yes, he was the best RB the Chargers probably ever had, but as a GM you always want to let go of a guy BEFORE he runs out of gas. LT only had one more decent year. Again, no problem with that choice.

Sproles: I’ll ruffle some feathers by saying this, but dude quit on the Chargers after signing his franchise contract. Just because he’s a great fit with the Saints didn’t mean the Chargers needed to keep a disgruntled, highly paid RB on board.

VJax: Excellent receiver, but NO WAY worth the amount of money he’s making each year. He’s not Megatron or Fitzgerald or Julio Jones or Roddy White. The Chargers couldn’t waste that money.

      • http://twitter.com/BReisinger86 Brandon Reisinger

Oh i totally agree that you can make an argument about letting all of these guys walk… Except Sproles! He would not have been disgruntled if AJ would have just signed him to a long term contract rather then franchise tagging him year after year. Not to mention the hit the the cap for doing that, Sproles could have been signed to a very reasonable contract early on.

The point i was trying to make was not so much letting these guys walk as it was not bringing in talent to replace them. I don’t think anyone can say that the talent level has not severely dropped off in recent years

  • RussinSactown

Any coach out there has a plus and minus side. That said, after one is hired, we will all be hopeful that he has the stuff to turn things around. Personally, any coach with fire on the sidelines will be an upgrade from Norv. Just be ready to coach. And give him a GM that can find the parts that make his system work.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

absolutely!!! if they win, we will shut up for a while. Then our expectations will be for that super bowl and when we dont get that, we may be calling for this man’s head.

  • Tom Spalsbury

    What about Brian Billick ?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

anyone have any objections to Billick?

      • http://www.facebook.com/johnny.goes.bad John Guzobad

no objection here — in fact, I wonder why he isn’t mentioned more often.

he was let go after one bad year in Baltimore… before & after that, the team has been top notch.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

I agree Ernie. We are FINALLY heading in a different direction. I have my favorites, but I’m excited to see who we get! None of us will be a part of the interview process, so we won’t know how the new coach really set himself apart from the others. (hopefully it’s not just money). I ultimately hope we get someone with discipline, fire, good leadership skills,… And who GENUINELY likes the Chargers. I just want to be proud of my team, and the product on the field, super bowl or not. I wanna have fun watching games again. Super bowl would be nice, though… Hahaha!

    • Nick in PB

I feel you Pete! I feel the same way. Remember back when the Chargers were the talk of the town? You’d see Charger jerseys and t-shirts and flags everywhere! Now, I walk down the street in PB and I see Bears jerseys and Patriot jerseys. Let’s get a good leader in here and make this a Charger town again!

      • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Looks like we just did, Nick!

        • Nick in PB

Yea Boooeeee! Pete, I think so. I like this pick. I think McCoy and Telesco will work with each other and get this team headed in the right direction.
