Chargers Could Be Interested in Jim Mora

Jim Mora’s name is coming up again around town. He was recently here when his Bruins were whipped in the Holiday Bowl. Reporters were asking him then about his interest in the Chargers job and responded with, “I’m not going to talk about the Chargers. The Chargers have a head coach who’s a very good friend of mine. I’m not going to disrespect him by by saying anything about that job.”

Can we ask him about the job again? Now Mora is mentioned by Kevin Acee about the possible job opening. Acee says there could be interest from the Chargers.

Mora would be able to keep John Pagano as the defensive coordinator and also could bring in Noel Mazzone as the offensive coordinator. Mazzone was the offensive coordinator with Philip Rivers for a season at NC State.

Mora has a house in town, married his wife in Point Loma and started his NFL career with the Chargers. He worked with the team when Don Coryell was the head coach.

He has NFL head coaching experience, which the Chargers brass has been looking for, with the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks. He has a 31-33 career record and only has 1 winning season under his belt.

Jim Mora Jr? Don’t know if that will make the fans happy. Don’t know if he will be able to win ballgames. He will be able to yell and jump on the sideline though. I would want him to bring a better offensive coordinator with him. I don’t care if Mazzone worked with Phil in college.

Hell no….but knowing the Chargers guess he will be the man

    • Ernie Padaon

This feels like a Chargers hire. Why do we torture ourselves?

  • 619chargers4life

at least Acee said there “could ” be interest and not that there is. very disappointing if Mora ends up our HC

  • James P Derrick

Mediocrity at best… only hope now is that they hurry up with this process……I’m sure it’s killing all of you that they are taking so long….Why???? Dean knew he was showing dumb and dumber the door… he should have planned sooner….now this process drags on and coaches are getting hired like crazy and the beloved Chargers org continue to pick boogers….frustrating….

Hope is eternal no more retreads no Gruden, Mora or other failed NFL coach. Get younger hungrier Asst. coach. Give him his chance

  • Nick in PB

OMG… no friggin way! I hope this is not the man they are targeting. This would not be a good hire. Hopefully, the consultant they hired to help out will point that out to Dean. What James said, why is this taking so long!!!! Coaching candidates are getting snatched up. My only guess is that they are targeting someone that’s in the playoffs. A good coordinator that we cannot yet talk to. Please, not Jim Mora. He’s always been a big name coach that has done nothing!

Two candidates have been selected. Reid and the guy going with the Bills. We weren’t picking Reid, so what have we lost? Are there no more coach candidates out there? Yeah, there is. It hasn’t been a week since the season ended. Norv and AJ just canned on Monday, Less than seven days is not a long time.

      • Nick in PB

Sorry, I just hate the thought that Jim Mora is a candidate. And the fact is, there are a lot of coaching vacancies. Plus, many Charger fans have been waiting for a new coach since Norv first got hired! hahaha That’s a true story! (-:

The way he handled the game against Baylor, kicking field goals instead of going for the touchdown when they were losing by four scores, was really stupid. I would hate to see that with the Chargers.

Not another HC with a losing record PLEASE!!! 32-34 NFL reg. season 1-1 post. Should not even be considered, let’s hire an NFL winner this time.

This is not a fire sale. No need to rush like a bunch of K-Mart shoppers. Personally, I think it’s smart for the Spanos to do their due diligence, if that is what they are actually doing. There has been years of sloppy, unthoughtful managment, etc, etc. As bad as the Chargers are right now, it is still a good job for a great coach. They are out there. You have to figure they are polling those coaches that they are interested any way, to get a feel if the interest is mutual. My worry is the Spanos steering this process in one direction because they already have their minds made up.

    • Nick in PB

You might be right Stefanie. I think they have interest in some of the coordinators out there that are still in the playoffs. Unfortunately, I doubt they were any of the coaches that lost yesterday so we are going to have to wait. Just heard that Bruce Arians had to be excused from this mornings game. He got sick and was carted off on a gurney!

    • Ambitoos

They can take as much time as they want. Just don’t hire Mora.

  • Ambitoos

How could they possibley hire Jim Mora and then say they want to win a championship. I agree with Nick in PB. No way, no how, not a chance. How could he even be considered.

I saw this and thought ok, here’s a purebred Coach. But as a old UCLA Fan I hate to see him leave when he’s about to turn the UCLA team back to where their a powerhouse again. His father was a good coach and Jim is excellent too. He would be a better pick-up than Holmgren because of his youthful thinking and being a Coach willing to change to compete. I have the most respect for our older Coaches but everyone in every job become set in their formula for winning ways. We need someone as I’ve said on many sites that wants the league to follow their cue insted of being followers to the teams now. Coryell didn’t make it to the Superbowl and unrightfully so (Holyroller/frozen field), but he changed football for every team out there. And how many coaches under his guidence win Superbowls? Gibbs and Madden are just two who used his crazy ideas to make the league change their ways. This is what the Chargers need in way of Management and thinking. We made it to the moon first because we pushed the envelope and stole Germanys lead Coach. Coach Kelly would be the man if he could be lured away from the Ducks.
