The San Diego Chargers have asked for permission to interview Arizona Cardinals Steve Keim for the open GM position. In order to get more information on Keim, I asked Scott Allen from Raising Zona to drop a little knowledge for us. Here is what he had for us:
I don’t know a whole lot about the guy except he is well liked, not only in Arizona but throughout the NFL. Word is he is definitely ready to make the move from the title of Vice President of Player Personnel to General Manager. The thought before Monday was that Keim would be a candidate for the GM position in Arizona, however it sounds as if the Cards could be going in a different direction, although nothing has been confirmed one way or the other. There was a prevailing thought that Ken Whisenhunt would be retained if Keim was elevated in place of Rod Graves. Well, they flat out fired both. Sounds like Keim will be on the move, just a matter of where.
Keim has been with the Cards for 14 years moving around between scouting and player personnel titles. He has the experience so his time is now. If he is as good as people say he is, then San Diego would be wise to look at him.
If Keim comes over, then Whisenhunt would seem to be the immediate favorite to coach the Bolts.
It looks like the Cardinals are going to go hard after Andy Reid. Reid would also have a heavy hand in the personnel decisions for that roster. At least Keim would have a decent quarterback to work with in San Diego.
