And It Is Official: Chargers Fire AJ Smith and Norv Turner Today

The news that you have been waiting for has finally arrived. The San Diego Chargers have fired GM AJ Smith and head coach Norv Turner today. The new head coaching search will begin.

Norv has been on the hot seat with the team since he arrived in town. He was the successor of Marty Schottenheimer and had big expectations on his shoulders. He started off hot, but then fizzled out after a few years. He hasn’t taken the team to the playoffs in the last 3 seasons and the Chargers need to find a head coach that can bring them back to the tournament.

AJ Smith took over the team for the late John Butler and turned the franchise around after making some great moves in the draft. AJ’s failure has been in his ability to keep his talent on the roster. He chased some great skill players away and the team has not been able to recover from their losses. He has struggled with some recent first round draft pick busts and he also brought in Norv to coach the team.

There will be a new era of Chargers football coming.

    Finally sheesh!!!!

a year too late, but still I applaud the management for finally seeing reality and not dollar signs.

The reality was if they kept Norv and AJ, they’d lose dollar signs.

      • Ernie Padaon

So true. Now, will they sign a coach that will bring the dollar signs back?

at this point it doesn’t matter. anything is better than what we had.

A single blue and gold tear just rolled down my cheek… One of joy… Yet, one of frustration, also.

Spanos clan hired Ron Wolf to head up the GM search. This is a football guy. So at least that is positive. If they would splurge with a “big dog” coach, that would help get the fans back in the stands– a coach that is well respected and really good.

I think Arians could coach up Rivers back to his Pro Bowl old self. But that is just my thought.

    • RussinSactown

We need someone who can pull some effort out of the O-Line so Phil can do more than chuck and duck all season. Arians would be a good fit. Lovie Smith would be good too. Just don’t bring in a retread like Jim Mora.

  • Stefanie Smith

Here is something on Wolf. “Ron Wolf is the former American football general manager of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. He also played a significant role in personnel operations with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders from 1963–1975 and again from 1978–1990″
