Robert Meachem has been in the dog house since he dropped that game winning pass against the Cleveland Browns. He has been dropped to the basement floor of the depth chart behind everyone under the sun. The San Diego Chargers pick up random players off of the streets and they move up in the depth chart over Meachem. Danario Alexander was a street pickup and he is now the team’s number 1 receiver. Seyi Ajirotutu was picked up and instantly became the starter in the slot. Micheal Spurlock is another receiver that has risen above Meachem.
Now with the injury to Malcom Floyd, Meachem will get his shot to return to the starting lineup. Meachem will be the starter against the New York Jets on Sunday. The Chargers are looking toward the future with the roster and need to see if Meachem can provide anything on offense. Young players are getting more opportunities in games and these last two games can be used to see if Meachem and Philip Rivers can get on the same page. I hope they can, but won’t be holding my breath.
