AJ Smith and Norv Turner to be Fired in Offseason; Jimmy Raye Likely Heir Apparent

Get ready for this to be denied by everyone in Chargers Park, but Kevin Acee is reporting that AJ Smith will join Norv Turner in the unemployment line at the end of the season. “Sources” are saying that Dean Spanos decided that Norv would be gone a month ago and that AJ Smith is likely to follow. The fan unrest has finally gotten to the owner. If AJ Smith is shown the door, the likely replacement will be current Chargers Director of Player Personnel Jimmy Raye and John Spanos would become his right hand man.

I usually have backed AJ Smith. Before he came along, we were all watching one of the worst teams in the league. He turned the ship around and became one of the best teams in the league under his watch.

He lost his magic though. He couldn’t make good selections in the draft, he couldn’t hold onto his own players and this season showed that he didn’t know how to sign free agents. His decision to select Norv Turner as the head coach was my biggest frustration with AJ. There were some glory years with AJ, but his latest work has been pretty messy.

If AJ is let go at the end of the season, there will be a market for him. We will have to see what kind of strategy Jimmy Raye has as a general manager though.

Not to rain on the parade, but I will believe when I see it. We’ve heard this before. Nonetheless, AJ cannot stay, as any new coach would be under his thumb.

Maybe it’s the overdose of chill pills I’ve taken this season but I think This is getting bad by the minute and what seems to be a news for joy, it’s more of an inconveniece and distraction for the team since we all knew that Norv and AJ were about to be fired at season’s end. This is not the way to go, now, I don’t know what Kevin Acee was thinking, maybe he wanted sensational publicity and keep trending but unwittingly he gave a little leverage to the dynamic duo and hurt the franchise. He could just kept this one for himself and let it roll at the end.

Now, if they’re going to get fired, fire them already and start rebuilding! It is never to early to prepare for the draft and season.

    Bolt up!

Until I see that they fired AJ and Norv, I can’t get excited about the news. Spanos is the kind of guy who is happy he owns a team but doesn’t care if he wins.

If Jimmy Raye is assigned to the GM spot he may be hampered in that capacity by the fact that John Spanos (now director of college scouting) will be his assistant. Another Spanos is a decision making position does not mean success for our Bolts organization; look at Dean Spanos’s record. If the Spanos family does not turn around this mess they created we will be in a position of “also rans” in the AFC West. Where we are now is like the position the Chargers were in when they had Mike Reilly as the head coach and just drafted Ryan Leaf. Where is Ryan now? – In prison, Good luck to us Chargers Fans!
