Chargers Likely w/out 3 Starting O-Lineman on Sunday

I wonder how Philip Rivers feels about that news. Jared Gaither is already on IR and his replacement Mike Harris is likely going to miss the game against the Steelers. The Chargers also will likely be without Tyronne Green and Jeromey Clary.

Maybe Norv Turner should just sit Philip Rivers like he did in the preseason game this year when he knew the quarterback was going to take some big hits. It’s only the Pittsburgh Steelers that we are playing against!

We will also be without middle linebacker Donald Butler against the Steelers.

This sounds like it could get really ugly!

In the last two years the Chargers have had 13 offensive linemen yet the offensive line coach has been the same since 2007 (Hal Hunter) so what has been the problem? Obviously the lack of a good left tackle is a first but the rest of the offensive line has been together for quite sometime, can we blame Hal Hunter for not preparing them properly for each? Yes we can but then again, what has Coach Hunter has been given him to work with? Scraps. No disrespect for them, by all means, to play in the NFL means that their are the best of the best in the game of football but being top-notch in any given Sunday requires constant preparation, practice, chemistry and skills for each position yet Chargers management has neglected the position for quite sometime going dumpster diving and putting them in key positions instead of drafting them like they should. Here are the last six offensive lineman drafted:

2012 Johnnie Troutman G (Injured, won’t play until middle of 2013)
2011 Stephen Schilling OL (Drafted in the sixth round and actually played in nine games starting two)
2009 Louis Vasquez G (Drafted in the third round, decent starter)
2009 Tyronne Green G (Drafted in the fourth round, struggling but a starter nonetheless)
2006 Jimmy Martin C (Drafted in the seventh round, vanished into thin air)
2005 Scott Mruczkowski C (Drafted in the seventh round, played in some games, started in few but now is a free agent)

I had to go all the way to 2005 (pre-iphone era) to get me a complete offensive line through the draft and no one higher than a third round, that tells me one thing: lack of vision. I have always thought that an excellent offensive line can make any team a good one. We’ve seen it many times in Denver where it seemed that any running back can lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl, heck, that is where Peyton Hillis made his name but in San Diego, it seems last on the list and when they finally decided to address it, they signed the “Big Lazy” off all people. I don’t know why Chargers did not brought back Schilling, he knows the offense and has a bit of experience in the trenches so he would nicely complement the rest of the O-line instead of bringing a 30 year old from the street who hasn’t played a significant down since 2010 (Rex Hadnot).

Everybody is pounding on Rivers, Norv and Meachem with good reason, well, I’m pounding on Coach Hunter and Chargers brass for not giving Rivers a good protection, good blocking and a decent blindside protection. No wonder Philip in the past two years has accounted for 44 turnovers and 11 of them in the fourth quarter. Give him some protection and he’ll produce as always, give him cheese and well, we all see the results.

From now on, it’s Fire Hal Hunter for me.

Time for Whitehurst to start warming up lol That preseason game he started to take all the sacks was pretty funny to watch.
