POLL Results: Should Ryan Mathews Play on Monday? (84% NO)

Ryan Mathews is back at practice.  He is recovering from a broken clavicle that he suffered August 9th on his first carry of the season. He returned to practice Monday on a limited basis, but he has yet to be cleared for contact.  No public decision has been made on whether or not he will be carrying the ball in the Chargers season opener against the Raiders, but it is highly unlikely.

In my opinion, it would be irresponsible to play Mathews while he is still healing, but I think it would be smart to have him gear up for the game.  That will keep the Raiders defensive coordinator guessing.  It’s not like if Mathews doesn’t play we would be without a running game.  We have Ronnie Brown,  Le’Ron McClain and Curtis Brinkley, who have shown they have what it takes.

Chime in and tell me what you think!

He needs to be 100%. Its up to the team doctors to determine that. As of right now i dont think hes 100% so off of that no he shouldnt play.

  • blu3ny3llow

No he shouldn’t play maybe dress up n warm up……keep them faiders guessing

    • Ernie Padaon

I like the keep em guessing thing… but how denoted would you be to put him in if he is dressed?

      • ChargerGirl Cindi

Well, we can’t play him if he is not cleared, but he’s cleared to gear up. I think the Chargers camp should just be hush hush on the topic.

        • Ernie Padaon

definitely should keep the situation on the HUSH. or just keep feeding the Raiders that he will play.

        • Brandon Reisinger

Seems to me that they are being hush hush, there have not been any official statements as to what the medical staff are saying nor has Norv made any official statement.. My guess would be that he will not be cleared only to dress by the medical staff and there will be no press release so the Faiders will have to game plan against him.

Very True! What I’d like to know is WTF is up with Gaither’s injury? So hush hush and no MRI results, nothing…this is bad and may get worse….Good stuff ChargerGirl Cindi!!!

          • ChargerGirl Cindi

Thank you. :-) I am worried about Gaither too. We should have heard some news by now!

      • blu3ny3llow

I wouldnt want him to play…the risk vs. reward is not worth it

        • Ernie Padaon

          denoted? thanks autocorrect!!! meant ‘tempted’!

          • ChargerGirl Cindi

            Damn you autocorrect!

Nope, not a doctor but no way, imo. :)

No. there is healthy. then there is “playing” healthy. RB use their shoulders to break tackles. he needs to be able to take hits, in practice, without showing an serious soreness. finding that out on the field would only set him back weeks.
keep him on the sideline until week three.
for the time being, go with the great acquisitions you made AJ.
