Did Ryan Mathews Call Out Jared Gaither?

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is putting in the effort to try and  return from a broken clavicle as soon as possible. He is recovering quickly. He had this quote to share after he was able to return to practice:

“You just got to be confident about it. I think if you’re sulking around, just basically feeling sorry for yourself, everything takes longer. You’ve got to have that mindset that you’re going to get back as soon as possible.” – SDUT

I like his approach to returning back to the field! Confidence! No sulking!

Wonder if he was referencing a teammate when he mentions ‘sulking and feeling sorry about themselves, making the recovery process take longer’? That doesn’t sound like anyone on the roster, right?

Could the third year running back really be throwing a jab at Jared Gaither? The fans and media have been all over Gaither’s case. He seems that he is playing up the injury and his history doesn’t really help his case.

Is there already animosity building up in the locker room? Did he call him out?

Mathews is not calling him out directly. He has class. I however think he’s become a bum and distraction. One piece of Baltimore I wish we hadn’t picked up.

i agree. RM24 is growing up. his words are aimed at being a leader, on the field, an in the locker room.

  • Cody Young

This ‘story’ is a complete reach, and a little irresponsible.

    • Edward Moretti

Agree. Why can’t we just concentrate on the game instead of trying to stir up an imaginary hornet’s nest?

The “story” is for you to draw your own conclusions. Everyone has their own opinion. I guarantee most of us will have our eyes converged on Mike Harris when our offense hits the field.

  • ChargerGirl Cindi

I’m sure he is just talking about being positive. He is a roll model after all. :-)

  • James Carr

if he wasn’t, he should. but I’d rather have both for the majority of the season rather than out after the first game

Just curious.. Are most people convinced Gaither is faking his injury? Or, are some just frustrated that the Chargers paid that much money for a LT that hasn’t stepped onto the field yet? I haven’t made a final decision, personally. However, would a player who is SO important to the welfare of the team, sit back and watch them struggle.. simply because he’s lazy? Is that who this guy is? If so, I am very concerned! I’m not asking for an “AJ sucks for signing him” tirade here, either.. cuz it’s worn out. I simply would love to hear what other fans think about the individual player.

definitely an interesting question… i know where i stand, but will put together a post to see what other people think.

      • Pete Spinning

Faith, family, football.. and sometimes polls.

Not trying to highjack… just really curious. Is he this big of a d-bag? Or will he come in later, and handle business? I hope so.

        • Ernie Padaon

now i want to add that to my profile!!!

    • Stefanie Smith

I am not trying to be facetious or rude, but maybe Gaither has some mental issues. Not necessarily laziness, but some people are full blown hypochondriacs.

      • Pete Spinning

        That is a valid possibility.

    • Jose Martinez

Good insiight into a perplexing situatuion. It’s hard to believe Gaither could shufffle away with his $6 million signing bonus after just one play. Or that the Chargers would let him get away with it. JM SD/TJ

This is the kind of article that gives the media a bad rep.
