Chargers Roster: The Temporary 53

The Chargers roster is far from completed, but they trimmed down the roster to 53 players. AJ Smith is scouring the waiver wire in hopes to upgrade at a few positions. Here are the 53 players that remain on the roster:

Quarterback
Philip Rivers, Charlie Whitehurst
There was no way that we were going to keep a rookie QB to back up Philip Rivers. Jarret Lee was released and I really don’t see why others love him.

Running Back
Ryan Mathews, Ronnie Brown, Curtis Brinkley, Jackie Battle
Would love to see them upgrade the third running back on the roster. Battle can play fullback and is a special teams ace, so hoping for am upgrade at Brinkley’s spot. Tim Hightower is available and would love to see the Chargers try and trade for Chris Ivory.

Fullback
LeRon McClain
Jacob Hester release was a bit of a surprise, but Jackie Battle will fill in at fullback also. Wondering if the Chargers plan is to upgrade another running back spot and didn’t want the shock of releasing Hester in a couple of days.

Wide Receiver
Malcom Floyd, Robert Meachem, Eddie Royal, Vincent Brown, Micheal Spurlock, Richard Goodman
Mike Willie gets released and will probably go to the practice squad if nobody picks him up. Vincent Brown will go to IR in a few days.

Tight End
Antonio Gates, Randy McMichael, Dante Rosario, Ladarius Green
We kept Green on the roster for now, but we do need to bring in another corner and tackle onto the roster at some point. Green would be one of the candidates to be released on that first pickup.

Tackle
Jared Gaither, Jeromey Clary, Michael Harris
We need to add a veteran to this mix. With Gaither’s uncertainty, we need to add some depth. Ryan Harris is a name that we could keep an eye on. He was released by the Broncos

Guard
Tyronne Green, Louis Vazquez, Rex Hadnot
Hadnot’s ability to play guard and center could be huge for the season

Center
Nick Hardwick, David Molk
Got Molk?

Defensive End
Corey Liuget, Vaughn Martin, Kendall Reyes
Sad day losing Jacques Cesaire yesterday.

Defensive Tackle
Antonio Garay, Aubrayo Franklin, Cam Thomas
After signing Franklin, we could see that Cesaire was on the bubble

Outside Linebacker
Shaun Phillips, Jarret Johnson, Melvin Ingram, Larry English, Antwan Barnes
Larry is actually healthy and could have a nice impact. Why do I feel that the worst player of this group, JJ, is in the starting lineup?

Inside Linebacker
Takeo Spikes, Donald Butler, Demorrio Williams, Jonas Mouton, Andrew Gachkar
10 linebackers on this roster. Wondering how often Jonas Mouton will be put on the inactive list.

Cornerback
Antoine Cason, Quentin Jammer, Marcus Gilchrist, Shareece Wright
Need to add a veteran to this group badly. 3 of the corners are hampered with a bad hammy. Joselio Hanson and Drayton Florence are names we could be looking at.

Safety
Eric Weddle, Atari Bigby, Darrell Stuckey, Brandon Taylor, Corey Lynch
Anyone else worried about Bigby as the starting safety?  Does AJ really hate OJ Atogwe or something?

Special Teams
Nate Kaeding, Mike Scifres, Mike Windt
These guys are solid

I was sad to see Hester and Cesaire go. Hester was great on special teams. I hope Battle can replace him. We really need to boost our OLine depth, and I agree with you on the DB position. Not sure if they would release Ladarius Green, unless he will go on the practice squad.

Why is it that other teams hang on to three QBs, and the Chargers don’t do that?

We have done it before, when Charlie Whitehurst was number 3 and Volek was number 2. We haven’t had anyone we want to develop and Philip Rivers is one of the most durable QBs in the league.

Wasn’t too sure if the Chargers 53-man roster would include 4 tight ends, but there you go, we actually got 4 tight ends (for now).
But with release of Davis & Henderson, the Chargers are clearly in search of a new OT.
And CB depth…same old story, a solid vet would be cool..
    Bolt Up!

I think when the Chargers put VBrown on ir they should pick up Plaxico Burress! Good redzone threat…. 2011 had 8 tds and 600 yards.

No no, no no. bad idea. Plaxico is a playmaker and playmakers cost more money. we’ll have none of that here. LOL.
