The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to move the trading deadline back a couple of weeks (now week 8) and also have changed the format on the injured reserve rules. According to Adam Schefter:
Only players with a “major injury” who are placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, September 4, or thereafter during the season, will be eligible to be reactivated at a later time.
The new change will help the San Diego Chargers in the Vincent Brown scenario. Brown is expected to be out at least 8 weeks with a broken ankle. If he were put on injured reserve with the previous rules, he would not have been eligible to play the entire season. The new rules will allow him to be brought back onto the roster when he is ready to play.
This rule would have been beneficial last season with Luis Castillo. The Chargers kept Castillo on the roster for most of the season with an injury, hoping that he would be able to play later in the year. He was unable to return and ate up a roster spot for most of the year.
Moving Vincent Brown to IR, should be able to open up a roster spot for someone.
