On The Bubble: Jackie Battle

Chargers backup RB Jackie Battle will need to step up big in the coming pre-season games. He was brought on and was the favorite to make the roster as the 3rd running back, but the injury to Ryan Mathews shifted some things around.

Battle is a pounder. He will fight in the short yardage situations, but he doesn’t have the speed to bounce runs to the outside. Opposing defenses can stack the middle against him if they sniff out the run and stop him. He doesn’t catch the ball out of the backfield that well either, but he should be able to be used as an extra blocker in the backfield.

In Kansas City, he was a beast on special teams and that could come into play in the roster decision. The edge for the roster spot right now goes to Curtis Brinkley, so Battle needs to make some good things happen these next couple of games. It will be a tight competition between Battle and Brinkley all the way to the end.

Who would you rather have on the roster?

brinkley- hungry, knows the system, something to prove moreso than battle?

the more i think about our running back system, the more i dont like it so much until Ryan Mathews is healthy. Ryan is just worlds better than the rest of the guys. We should be able to make it by the Raiders and Titans though with what we have.

agreed- especially since our passing game is so strong… : )

yeah Brinkley in my book. he has shown for a while now that he deserves his shot.

Ive always been a Brinkley fan. Hes always played well for us when we need him. I think our special teams will do just fine without Battle. Easy choice for me. Brinkley. Plus if we need someone to pound the rock, I think McClain can handle that department ha

    Brinkley all day!!!!!

Brinkley. Got a DM from him last night saying he can’t wait to keep getting looks. He was disappointed with his performance in GB. I wasn’t. He looked great, imo.
