Shaun Phillips is the “grizzly” veteran of the group. His numbers dipped last season after fighting through injuries, but he has proven that he is one of the best at getting after the quarterback on the roster. He didn’t have much help the last couple of seasons, but he should have a few guys helping him get after it this season. He is in a contract year and will want to show the rest of the NFL that he can still amke things happen.
Antwan Barnes was the team leader in sacks finishing with 11 sacks last season. He is the pass rushing specialist and was the only player on the roster last season that was able to put any kind of pressure on quarterbacks. He is in a contract year also. Two straight seasons of double digit sacks could be a nice pay day for him.
Larry English showed that he can put pressure on quarterbacks if he can get on the field. During the first preseason game, he was in the backfield getting pressure off of the edge. It he stays healthy, it could be a huge boost to the defense.
Then we have that rookie Melvin Ingram. We wanted a big time pass rusher going into the draft and he fell into our laps. In the one preseason game of action, he has shown the potential to be another stud getting after quarterbacks.
Four different outside linebackers on this defense that can get after it. John Pagano will have to find a way to rotate these guys in and allow them to do what they do best. Hit the quarterback!
