Curtis Brinkley Part of the Running Back Mix After Ryan Mathews Injury

Curtis Brinkley was on the bubble before Ryan Mathews went down. He could have been looking for a new team after the last preseason game, but now he looks like he will be part of the running back rotation. The rotation that Coach Turner mentioned to the media today was between Ronnie Brown, Le’Ron McClain and Brinkley (Gehlken). Brinkley holds the edge over the rookie backs, Edwin Baker and Michael Hayes in camp. He has been on the roster for a couple of seasons and he should know the offense better than the rooks.

If Brinkley gets a roster spot, where is that going to leave the newly acquired Jackie Battle. Battle’s skill set would be similar to players like Le’Ron McClain and Jacob Hester. Battle would be able to contribute on special teams, but there seems to be a few players on the roster that could help out in that department. Battle could now be pushed out of the mix because of the injury.

The guy has paid his dues on the practice squad. He played well enough to almost have gotten us the win against KC last year. Time to give him a shot with the big boys.
