How Ryan’s Injury Could Affect The Chargers Roster

Oh how the roster can change with one injury. With Ryan Mathews going down with the broken clavicle, another roster spot may be saved for a runningback. Ronnie Brown will be taking the bulk of the first team snaps with Ryan down, but who backs up Brown? Jackie Battle would be listed next on the depth chart and behind him are some youngsters that are fighting to keep a spot on the roster. Curtis Brinkley has the edge for the next roster spot over the rookies Michael Hayes and Edwin Baker. When Ryan was healthy, we likely would have kept 5 backs: Ryan, LeRon McClain, Jacob Hester, Ronnie Brown, Jackie Battle. Now with Ryan out, we may keep 6 on the roster.

The versatility of McClain, Battle and Hester could still keep us at 5 backs. All of them can play fullback or halfback in the offense and that could be enough to keep us above water until Ryan is ready to go again.

If the Chargers decide to keep 6 backs on the roster, then we could be losing someone like Ladarius Green. We would have to cut short at another position and there might not be enough roster spots to keep 4 tight ends. Jacques Cesaire also could be put on notice. Ryan’s injury could mean that we lose another good player on the roster.

Stupid clavicles… who needs them anyway?

OH NO RYANS DOWN EVERYONE PANIC!!! Just kidding, we all saw this coming, just not this soon! The other backs on the roster can get it done, its not like Ryan is missing 6 weeks of the reg season, we should have him back by week three! SO EVERYONE SHUT UP AND QUIT CRYING! My boy RM24 will still have a big year! BOLT UP!!!

No more crying RRR!! Lol. Inside joke. I really like the depth we have at RB. It also means more touches for Brinkley and Hayes. Brown was signed to stick. Battle and Baker have their own competition to find a place as well.
The concern is what other position takes a hit, roster wise, due to keeping an extra back? Or do we knowing we have McClain and Hester? Or is Hester on the Bubble? Only time will tell. *Hands Bolthead612 a tissue* You’re right. It’ll be ok. 24 will still have a big year. :)

“Stupid clavicles… who needs them anyway?” – Spot on! LMAO!
3 big dudes fall on top of you, and yer out.. 1st play.. SMH! Even the announcers didn’t notice. That was either REALLY tough of #24, or I hope it’s not so bad. At the end of preseason we’ll know, but it’s still early. Anyone could break out.
Brown looked good. McClain & Battle are proven back-ups, Hayes didn’t look good, unfortunately. Brinkley looked like Halloween night, with the sweep & the leap for a TD (even if it was against 2nd / 3rd squad). Baker I need to see more of.
I say Ryan, Ronnie, LeRon, Jackie, and Curtis or Hester stay. Keep Green.
Any loss hurts, but Brinkley & Hester will fight it out, and if we don’t cut either of them… Cesaire, McMichael, or Rosario are on the chopping block. I hope we keep Hester, as he’s a fullback & a special teams captain! The more I look at it.. Cesaire & McMichael may get cut.

I didn’t get to see the first drive of the game and had no idea mathews got hurt. Like I said, play the 1st team when the season starts. The adrenaline is runing like crazy in guys trying to make a spot and it settles down when the season starts, why hurt your players now.Especially the runningback postion since it’s down in the trenches. he’ll be back and do fine, but this has got to stop. Players every year go down in the preseason and Turner old school doesn’t realize that a guy trying to make a roster will shot-up steroids or anything else to make a impression. This is ludicrous to play players now. Scrimmages against Dallas where there are boundrys set is the way to go. Everyone will be jumping on the injury bug mathews has. it’s funny but NFL players hit the wieght room to put on Muscle but to much muscle and not enough bone strenghth is a bad combo. I think swimming should be the most important exercise in the training regimen. Ali was a bad man but he wasn’t muscle bound. Jump rope was one of his indurance routines. McClain will keep the d-lines in check until Mathews gets back. We’re going to need time to let the O-line learn to make some bigger holes, plus Turner needs to learn to run sweeps and draws alot more then between the tackles.
