Chargers Compiling a List of Veteran Quarterbacks After Whitehurst Went Down

Charlie Whitehurst was hit during practice and had to spend the rest of the day sitting next to Nick Novak‘s pisser. That is not where you want to see the backup quarterback on the first day of training camp. He busted his knee so bad that the Chargers needed to compile a list of veteran quarterbacks for possible replacements.

The list seems really simple to me:

Billy Volek!

Just bring back Billy! Even if Whitehurst is able to come back, the Chargers still should bring back Volek. He knows Norv’s system and he has proven that he can lead the team in a big game. A number of teams have Volek’s number just in case an emergency, but we should take him off the wire and into our locker room.

The list of veteran free agent quarterbacks available is awful. Here is a quick compilation of possibilities:

Kyle Boller
Jake Delhomme
A.J. Feeley
Jeff Garcia
J.P. Losman
Donovan McNabb
Kevin O’Connell
Chad Pennington

That is a list of has-beens and nobodies!

Maybe, the Chargers should just give the Browns a call and see what it would cost for Colt McCoy. Around draft time, it was reported that he was on the trading block and it would not cost much to get him. Tim Tebow anybody?

sounds like the clipboard is out 2-3 weeks…. BRING IN VOLEK!

Would be nice but Im bet they bring someone in for those couple weeks, then cut em. If Charlie is out 3 weeks, he will only miss 1 maybe 2 preseason games. Thats my guess!

yea… still would rather have Billy over the Clipboard… even if Clip is coming back

This should be a no brainer. They just need to pay the man, which they shouldve done in the first place

Out of that list I’d take Jeff Garcia. With our running backs we can try a ground attack first attitude, but Kyle Boller. Smith has to have his head examined. Again I’ll bring up the name Matt Nichols out of Eastern Washington. His College Career proved him solid. When the Cowboys invited him to camp they sit him all but one game and he showed his poise in that pregame by fumbling his first NFL snap only to recover and throw for a positive gain. Nothing new to the people at eastern Washington. Ask Tiawon Jones what he thought of his QB. Tiawon will be running for the Raiders and was the other bright spot on offense. He went to Canada but Smith would have been wise to pick this guy up as a 3rd QB. Remember what happen to Dallas the year Nichols tried out, Romo went out and the 2nd went down and there was a QB carosel. I really believe from what I’ve seen he was better than Romo. Smith lets our A#1 back-up walk, gets Charlie back ( I like the guy but we needed someone alittle more mobile at back-up. Smith is setting himself up just like Dallas did when they were expected to do well. Please Smith you’ve built yourself a good team, don’t throw your work away now by discounting how valuable a great back-up is. If not Nichols please get volek back, he’s proven time and again he’s top notch.
