Who Will Lead The Chargers in Sacks in 2012?

Who will lead the Chargers in sacks in 2012? In previous years, we had Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips destroying opposing quarterbacks. Now, we don’t know who is going to step up. Phillips had to battle through injuries last season and questions are popping up about his age. Will he still be the leader of the pack?

Antwan Barnes led the assault last season with 11 sacks, but can we expect that kind of production from him again? He shouldn’t see the field as often with Jarret Johnson here, Larry English healthy and Melvin Ingram brought onto the roster. He still is one of our best pass rushing specialists and will get lots of opportunities to bash in some QBs.

My pet Melvin? Could the rookie Melvin Ingram finish the season as the top dog? He was brought in here to be a force and to get after the quarterback. He won’t be the starter at the beginning of the season, but he could start stealing some snaps is he impresses during games.

Do I dare say Larry English? NEXT…

Cam Thomas? If a d-lineman is leading our team in sacks, then we are doing something terribly wrong or Cam Thomas is doing all kinds of right. The defense is made for those outside pass rushers to get after the quarterback!

If all things are right, Shaun Phillips NEEDS to be leading the charge on the defense! He is been on this defense for a long time and is our biggest threat. If he is not right, then somebody better step up and make some things happen. We need Shaun to be healthy and we need him to be a force.

There will be a solid rotation of pass rushers worked in on defense and it will be a race to be the top guy. Get those sacks and make that secondary look dominant! Who will be leading in sacks in 2012?

Phillips will tie for the lead league in sacks this year….. No, I’m not kidding.

  • jimthechimp

I reckon Barnes and Ingram will be our top two. Barnes is one of most underrated players in NFL and Ingram is the next Aldon Smith!

    • BoogaP

Ingram is not the next Aldon Smith.
He is the one and only Melvin Ingram! SupaMelvin!!!
He is a rookie that will dominate but that’s the only comparison.  Sorry, I hate then “the Next” thing.  It’s kinda like “they say”…. who is “they” and why don’t “they” stand up! lol

      • jimthechimp

@BoogaP I meant production wise rather than playing style!

  • Calum

I voted for Larry, purely because I think he’ll be a situation rusher like Barnes last year. If he’s healthy and a beast (like Double J says), then I dont seen why it wont be him! :D

    • jimthechimp

@Calum yeah but the question is can he stay healthy? Andif he does how will he get into that four man rotation?

      • Calum

         @jimthechimp ‘Beast-mode’! ;) Ok, maybe it’s wishful thinking!

    • biggsybolt

@Calum I’m with you I do believe his injury bug is gone. When healthy he has shown he has what it takes to get to the QB!

  • Jayner Foronda

the new boss in town… Ingram!

  • epadaon

4 people already voted for Larry.. .dont know why that makes me smile

  • boltsfan1972

I think it will be close across the board pretty much pick your poison our D will expose O line weaknesses

  • Bolts_NFL_music

I think Barnes will rock again 2012, don´t think he´ll slow down. Yeah sure and Ingram will rush that offenses too, I think he´ll fit in that system pretty fast. And yes we need a healthy Phillips…

  • epadaon

and melvin ingram takes an early lead

  • RussellGrant

Ingram will get the sacks.  Rookie on fire!

  • Chargersfan4life

I think it will be Barnes or Phillips(If healthy).

  • Gpettooh

Nice! I got Vikes in this piece!
But I think the sacks will be spread out, and evenly divided among our D.
Think barnes inches it out with the most sacks for the year!

  • charger17

Phillips will have a great year if he stays healthy

    • epadaon

@charger17 Welcome to our comments section.. Happy that you finally joined us!

      • charger17

@epadaon  @charger17  Thanks for the welcome… Cant wait for a great year!

  • Bleu

I think antwan barnes isgone kill them this year……

  • MikeTuck

Phillips will be there if the defense blitzes both on a regular basis. Barnes is also going to be there too. It depends on who the Offense doubles. The experience for both will payoff greatly, one thing about Phillips is he’s always around the ball. So if Barnes gets the sack and the QB gives up the ball Phillips has always been there to scoop it up. I wish our secoundary had his hands.

I’d like to add that English will get hurt during training camp and spent the year either fighting for a spot or released. I think that’s under.
